  • cause i am P.I.A.M! no mather what you heard about me!

  • Thank you maestro. The more I see great musicians, the more I'm convinced that they've played great since the beginning. You always have great tempo which I think is the foundation of a good musician. I have not seen all your videos but it would be good to know how you practice tempo and groove. Gracias!!!

  • Show'em how it's done Abe....NO PLAYING RAMP!!!!!

  • P.I.M.A. (pulgar, indice, medio, anular)

  • El de enmedio jajaja

  • To CashMarley, that bass that Abe used on that video clip is a Valley Arts bass. He was endorsing them at that time. They make great guitars as well. Steve Lukather and Russ Freeman was also endorsing them.

  • That clip made me look at classical music all together differently. Great video! 

  • Great, spanish and bass lessons all in one!!

  • Saw him live a few years ago...he is absolutely amazing

  • nice

  • he should cut his nails. their hitting the string and it sounds like a pick sometimes

  • @KincaidBass you're stupid

  • @Jersildj00 sorry for expecting a good tone with such a good technique

  • OMG - 233 thousand views :)

  • Hell yeah, this is awesome. I had never considered using the thumb somehow, always thought I had to use my pinky.

  • Laboriel started as a classical guitarist. I can hear Flamenco in a lot of his patterns. It's pretty impressive, actually -- flamenco bass.

  • Gracias Querido Maestro!!!!:.

  • What kind of bass is that ?

  • @CashMarley

    Valley Arts

  • Maestro

  • why playing by starting with the thumb, its more natural on the other way no ?

  • @feedyoursoul01 thats the way its played on classical guitar, you actually can play it starting on whatever finger you want

  • 10 ppl suck

  • @MrAdamShockley... plus that one other who added!!! >=/

  • Interesting that I always found P A M I much more comfortable and natural than P I M A.

I guess its fine, cause there's no real difference in the sound between the two techniques.

  • Well, that technique is older than Laboriel. Tater was doin it in the 70s, along with 5 finger technique, and there was a few others for sure, includin one guy did it with steel fingerpicks on an Ampeg plexiglass bass. Course, Tater never got famous like Laboriel.

  • Stasiek weź gitare i zagraj cwaniaku

  • Gówno wiesz murzynie jebany o grze!

  • its a flamenco technique applied to bass....

  • He is Mexican, don't believe?, check wikipedia XD, His son is the Drummer of Paul McArtney

  • he is spanish? :S sorry for bad english!

  • wow just realized this guy is from mexico

  • You know I got the 3 fingers down but that 4th finger just won't do it. Damn it.

  • I guess my fingers can't learn Spanish cause they sure as hell don't want to do this

  • EL ES HERMANO DE JOHNNY LABORIEL

  • Abe Laboriel was the first bass player I looked up to almost 20 years ago and i have this video. I discovered Matt Garrison almost 10 year ago and he's awesome but he was using the 4 finger technique that I learned from Abe years before. But Matt Garrison gets the credit for this technique. I know its a classical technique but Abe pioneered this on bass way back in the 80's.

  • what kind of bass is it?

  • Please rename this to "Abe Laboriel gives spanish lesson."

  • @kabustard And let me tell you that his accent is flawless, Im amazed of how good and neutral he pronounces the words in spanish.

    !!

  • i always thought that Garrison invented this technique!

  • It all comes from classical guitar technique... and Dominique Di Piazza has also been around for a long time with this kind of stuff, maybe not as popular. But Abe is special, and he uses all fingers, dayum!

  • I think that is his valley arts bass, he goes through all of them in the full video. I think you can strike with the pinky if you hit with it first, helping with the force of the hand. If the hand is stationary, his technique seems best. But, to each his own in these things.

  • NO SE BE MEXIKANO

  • @WolfLikeLamb

some people do use it but it's usually too short and weak to be of any use for most people.

  • What nice Bass guitar, anybody knows name of this bass???

  • how?

  • pima ftw

  • 20 yrs BEFORE the hype of four fingered technique...I think it's about time credit was given to whom it's due! Go Abe!

  • anyone that is familiar with classical guitar is familiar with this basic info. The rudiments of classical and flamenco. The problem being that most people don't educate themselves in the history and development of music.

  • wow i just discovered this guy and i think this is amazing. Gonna keep on searcging more abe vids :)

  • I've loved him since the 70s when I heard him on others' albums, but I had no idea he used this 4 finger technique until I saw him on youtube. Wow.

Can we bass players PLEASE quit referring to this as the Matt Garrison technique?!

  • Thx for the tips man!!!!!!! Your great Abe!!!

  • Women love 4 finger technique hehe....love ya Abe

  • sigeg yaw yaw d mo tug tog!!

    saba!

  • Orgullosamente mexicano.

  • Will it be okay if instead of "p-i-m-a" as basic picking on a single string I will use "p-a-m-i"? Since my sloppy 3-finger plucking always goes a-m-i and i-m-a is kinda hard for me to pull off?

  • i play death metal music and this man is awesome i´ve seen other things form him and ..is great

  • hey !

i know its maybe the wrong video to ask this .. but ill do :P

so .. u watch at ~ 1:40 these lines of notes that hes playing.. how do u do that ?

whats the system behind it ?

im sorry if its stupid .. im learning since ~1 month without teacher so i got nobody to ask this .

i would love evrybody who could say something usefull :)

    thanx :)

  • those are called chromatic scale notes

    or spider notes i think

so youre playing fret to fret without skipping a fret

sounds somewhat cool if played right

  • chromatic scale in fourths* going up 4 notes without skipping a fret then going to the next note up playing 4 and so on

    Ex: A Bb B C / Bb B C Db / B C Db D ya see

  • it's a nice little technique, but it's a very light strum he's getting out of it,and for it to be the cornerstone of his playing ... I don't know, just can't see it being of too much use unless you were playing something very selective

  • he dont have the mexican acent so shut up . i m for argentina and i know spanish

  • he don't have the mexican accent? so i guess everyone in argentina has the exact same accent? mexico is a diverse country with many different accents, listen to the accent of a lacandon maya (who also speak spanish, in addition to their native language) and tell me it sounds like what you call "the mexican accent"... try to do some research before making stupid comments

  • mexican acent its like a british speaking spanish

  • the blackest bass player i ever saw

  • that awesome

  • to randyana "100% mexican unfortunately....."

that shows a little racism from you

I'm happy the most amazing bass player on the planet

is Latin American, so proud off...

  • I don't think randyana is being racist, I think just disappointed Abe isn't from the same country.. I'd love to be able to say he's Australian!

But, he's a legend no matter where he's from!

  • Bão demais essa aula

  • el del medio??? jajaj

    MAYOR SE DICE ABE !

  • En realidad se dice medio o corazón. Lo dijo bien Abe. xD

  • el buen abraham

  • Guys it doesnt matter what his ethnic background is. This technique is similar to mine. But really if there is someone that is learning to play the bass they should learn to play with all the fingers. Its much easier and less stressful on your hands. Also using different size fingers gets different sounds. This guy is cool, and that bass is nasty(cool)!!

  • bass guitar is 55 years old- its nice that some of these cats are taking anything from classical technique and transposing it to the bass, for so long all we had were the index and the middle finger- and the thumb for slap

  • im not mad or anything and it is sick how he does it is just different from classical guitar. and ur the one that needs to chill out

  • And hi is from La Ceiba, Honduras by the way.

  • i'm from La Ceiba, Honduras and i'm 100% he's Mexican unfortunaly, i believe he has some relatives in trujillo,Honduras or was raise there, something like that!

  • I'm from la Ceiba, Honduras and I know he's NOT! i heard he got some relative in Trujillo but no in la Ceiba

  • This is not the way they do in spanish guitar. It's p a m i, in that order. Anyway, it's good tecnic for bass.

  • lol he say p a m i

hey hes a bass-god ever :) saw him life 1993 in switzerland, god's gift to us musicians

  • that is not how they do it in classical guitar...

  • now that's what I call a relaxed bass guitar player ;) so cool!

  • thanks for the tip.

  • This is sooo useful for me. dang if i only knew about him earlier...

(why is he moving quite weirdly?)

  • omghs he makes it look so easy...

  • haha he shoulda fingered the camera when he was explaining the middle fingers name

  • is that bass a Valley Arts?

  • yes! a valley arts...not he samick stuff. made in USA .

  • I'll stick to the 2

  • wat kind of bass is that?

  • Not only is he the best electric player ever he has the world's largest collection of baggy shirts on the planet. If you see him live expect some colour.

  • Grandpa is a Great Bassplayer, one of the Best on this planet!!! wish i could sit and learn from him how to play praise music, cause churches have at least when i was younger made musicians play only and never stop to dance know what i mean!
