i just had the same problem but with jane austen for the latest version. for those who have this problem, the hard reset is to slide the power button and hold it for 15 seconds (15 actual seconds).
Geez, just reset it already. Take the back cover off and poke something through the little hole marked "RESET." E Ink doesn't require power to sustain an image.
The eink technology that the kindle uses doesn't need any power to maintain an image, so it won't go blank no matter how long you leave the battery out.
