Omg that is so weird I just came to YouTube after looking at your website on Joey and Sophie!! Aww I want a pet monkey!!! I would name my monkey boots if a boy and princess if she was a girl!!
lol One thing Ive noticed being on YouTube too much, is that animal videos ( usually exotic ) have the most comments disagreeing on something in the video or hating. EVERYONE'S an expert. smh
I read everything on your website and am happy to see your videos. Im guessing this video was taken before you got your third little guy:) i have wanted one of these for my whole life and soon enough i will be ready to start raising my monkeys.
I seriously hope you don't keep squirrel monkeys in a bird cage. They are extremely delicate and are prone to developing neurosis. Please be careful and make sure you do research about their natural social structure and diseases and neuroses that they are prone to in captivity :)
@SElement91 That is an old video. I used that cage when Joey was a baby. Then only during winters to keep them inside (maybe 10 days out of year as I live in Miami). Since then there cage has grown progressively larger as Joey got older and larger, and as my troop grew. Their current enclosure is 10ftx16ftx6ft tall, with natural substrate on parts, nest boxes, swings etc. I am constantly reading about them...primatology books, manuals written by lab professionals, and pet owners.
@SElement91 You can look up my other videos with their current caging. I am still researching on them 5 years later. They are my life. I understand that they are wild animals, and respect them as such. I assure you they are happy and healthy.
@xeileen916x That's great! Keep up the reading! It is definitely important to stay up to date with current primatology research. I'm sure they are healthy- happy, there is no way to judge that, quite honestly, as we cannot see into the minds of these primates. However, it does seem like you are honestly concerned about the well being of these animals
would you reccomend others to have a squirrel monkey as a pet??? how do you consider the experience of living with a monkey??? im asking you this because im really interested in getting one in some years! and i want to know others people experiences before getting it. hope to get an answer! Thank you
do you like your monkeys? are they good to you? are they easy to buy? do you ever feel like you don't want them? are they good with other people? PLEASE ANSWER!
@TheAwsomejo I think I got that one from Ebay for like $300. But that was from when Joey was a baby. I don't have that one anymore. After that they had the Big green double Macaw cage, then the 6ft x10xt dog kennel with chicken wire to close the openings. Now they have a 10ftx16ft x 6ft high cage made from 1inch chain-link. This will be their permanent cage...for now at least LOL. I have videos of all the cages up so you can see progress.
@xeileen916x hi, i was wondering where you can get a giant cage like that, i have always wanted a squirrel monkey, so if you would answer these questions that would be great.
where can i get a baby squirrel monkey, how long do they live, are they a pain in the butt, do they need lots of attention, are they cuddly, would you let them sleep in your bed, and do you like them as pets?
i want one of those where can you get it but i'm from manila can you get one when you are living in manila? i want one for my birthday and i'm a filipino
Okay, I get that you think they're cute and you want to look after them. But what about their welfare? Are they really getting the care that they need? Do they have an appropriate diet? Do you encourage natural activities such as foraging for food? Where is the greenery, the trees for them to climb? Who do you see when the monkeys are sick? Are they qualified and experienced? Squirrel monkeys are wild animals that need specialist care and attention. I hope you two fit the bill.
Seems cute now, but when you contract a zoonotic disease like Simian Herepes B (with >70% fatality in humans), it'll start to seem like a bad idea. Primates in general make for lousy pets. Best that they stay in the wild.
I love monkeys to bits, but you see My parents would not have someone who needs a diaper again so I'll wait till I move out but I doubt I can find one in western canada!
they have never caught their fingers on the door. I am always careful before I close thier cage that they are not there. But this could happen with any door on any cage. Not sure what the worry would be with this particular cage.

i want a squirrel monkey sooooo bad...well when i get old enough 2 have my own house...but are they expensive to have in the U.S.???...where did u get them from???...are they legal as pets???...lol...i know lots of questions...but i wanna know.
@xeileen916x I want to buy a squirrel monkey iv read all the books i could find on them and iv found a vet that can see them and texas where i live allows me to have them as pets with a permit and i have all my items i just wanted to kno if you could help me find a good breeder or seller where i can buy a squirrel monkey from or reccomend me one if you dnt mind plz and thankyou
A capuchin is small enough so that proper caging can be made in a residential neighborhood. Owners must always assure caging is safe for monkeys & neighbors keeping a primate properly contained & from escaping. Although a big yard is recommended. Not sure about on in an apartment though. Not enough space. and outdoor room from sun exposure. Key is safety of public & animal, as well as adequate room for caging.
thanks for the reply, I still have alot more research to go about capuchin monkeys. do you know anything I need to know about tufted capuchin monkeys. (other than their very hard work ; )
I believe PA has a state permit system. Please visit my web site. I have more info on laws & their care. They are A LOT of work, and ownership should not be taken lightly. Research is a MUST!
That isn't their cage. That is a temp cage I have for when it is too cold outside & need to keep them indoors. I live in Miami, so its only about 5 days a yr that its cold. I agree that cage is far to small for everyday use. I keep it in the proch & that is where we were. Their actual cage is 7 ft x 7ft x 4 ft. Either way, I will be building them another cage at least double the size, so 14ft x 14ftx 10ft in the next few months. IN other videos you see the other cage & new one in future.
hello, i live in LA and i was looking into buying a monkey. i grew up with a squirrel monkey and i would love another. do you have any advice how i could get one, permits ect. any info would be great!
i have been wanting a monkey when i grow up, of course, since i was a kid but evrybody thinks i am joking or being immature. im serious, what country are you in.i dont want to support ,in any way the illegal pet trade.
I purchased mine from a breeder in Miami. I live in Florida (US). Some states have bans, others permit system, and others no laws. FL has a permit system.
Can bonobos be kept as pets i have been doing research on them but i havent saw anything about their care all ive seen is people saying they kill the mothers for the pet trade
NO, but you would have more trouble locating a breeder from there. There don't seem to be any. You can't ring monkeys into the US from other countries, even the bordering ones.
With a monkey is it hard and difficult to take care of them like is it much harder then a dog or cat please respond i am trying to get as much as info as i can on their care Thanks
what ever you guys do, do not get a chimp the with try to seduse you and if you have a pet (cat or dog) it with take it mouth and put it on is private and if the animal backs away the chimp with either kill it, slap it, hurt it, or pull him back in the spot
yes it is harder to take care of but i personally think the challenge would be worth the reward and they need alot of maintnance but if your willing it is worth it please tell me whay type and i can give you lots of info
its not easy like a cat or dog. you need to be there 24/7 for it. u need to check with the government and it costs around 7000$ for a monkey. and keep up with all the shots and buy cage which is expensive. and for daily walks you need to be careful and let nobody touch it especially kids because even a friendly scratch could result in rabie shots or being put down. having a monkey as a pet is more challenging than a baby or any pet. and lives for over 40yrs are you ready for that commitment?!.
"(Note:Monkeys do need constant companionship to remain happy/tame)." How much time do you mean, Someone with then all day? And how much room do they need ?
You in the 1st year ALL the time. Someone or another monkey with them all day after that. They don't like to be alone. Needed space depends on the species. My squirrels are happy with their 7ftx7ftx4ft cage, but they are let out often. For a capuchin & larger I would not have a cage smaller than 10ftx12ft H x 10ft. They need room to be able to jump, exercise, & hight to feel safe.
NO WAY, ABOLUTELY NOT! Chimps are 7 times stronger than a man when adults. They can live 60+ years in captivity & require someone with experience such as an animal trainer. The do not make good pets for children, and those who do not have the land/experience requirements in order to meet all their needs. Also they are extremely endangered in their wild habitats. Add to that the cost of $60,000 to buy, plus another $10,000 minimum in caging strong enough to contain an adult chimp.
I do support ownership of ALL exotics by persons who are knowledgeable in their care, can provide for ALL their needs for the duration of their life, & they are captive bred. If the person has to ask me if they make a good pet that tells me they have not done the proper research at all, & therefore should NOT have a chimp as a pet. I read the 3rd sentence where I explain myself.
When they do bite how bad is the bite and with a pet monkeys can u still go out and have fun like sleep over your friends house or go to the movies or something like that and do u think a monkey would be good for a 12 year old. Thanks
It all depends on the size of the monkey. Obviously the bite from a hamster is going to be much less than the bite of a raccoon, or a cocker spaniel. Same principle with monkeys...The bigger the monkey the bigger the strength/teeth, the worse the bite. Any animal can bite. The key is training the animal properly so you don't get bit at all. I do NOT recommend monkeys as pet for persons under the age of 18, even 21, because they have so many changed to occur in their life still.
It would be like having a human baby. You could go out to the movies after the monkey was asleep. And unless someone is at your house to feed it early in the morning you could not sleep over any where. Monkeys are a HUGE responsibility. I always tell teens to wait. Research on them, volunteer at zoos to get experience, and have fun in school/college. Once they are settled down look into getting a monkey... if they still want one.
wait until you are older- you probably could'nt get one anyways, no-one in their right mind would think you were ready for the responsibility- get a hampster
They may scratch you every once in a while on accident when jumping on you, or jumping off. But that is more with the capuchin and larger species. Mine never scratch neither on purpose nor on accident. My mother-in-laws capuchin however will leave me a little scratch here & there usually around my neck which is where she jumps on & off of. I don't even realize it until much later.
A scratch on purpose has to be provoked like a bite would need to be provoked. Capuchins will use their mouth & hands if they feel threatened. Monkeys will bite, but they will warn you first that they are not content with the situation. If you don't heed their warnings then you can run into trouble. It is all about reading their vocalizations. My mother-in-laws monkey has never bit me just because, & she is 13 years old. (Note:Monkeys do need constant companionship to remain happy/tame).
ok i can tell this guy really loves these monkeys and takes great care of them and i think they are much happier with him than bye them selves and i really admire u ur a great guy
I am in the US so I am not completely familiar with laws and prices there. I belive that there are 3 species which can be acquired in England without a permit requiring experience. Squirrel Monkeys, Marmosets, and Tamarins. I would contact your wildlife department enforcement officer and get the right information from him. Remember they are a HUGE commitment, & a LOT of work.
Theses squirrel monkeys are just plain cute. Do they become aggressive? How do you curb this aggressiveness? How do you keep them from biting you or kids?
Thank you. They require constant attention, nurturing, and discipline. The basically require A LOT of attention, large enclosures, special diets, and enrichment. Firm NO's, and time out back in cage when they nip as babies to show them it is not acceptable. They will learn biting is not acceptable. BUT you must always dedicate a tremendous amount of time to them. They are social animals and need companionship to be healthy and happy.
shut the fuck up psychocalikitty u son of a bitch u have no reason to curse at her i have a squirrel monkey 5 of em they have a 50.7 sq ft x 79.3 sq ft enclosure for them they are ea fed 7 ilbs a day so ha now tell me they dont have a good home bty they were all rescues from South America Wildlife Station so now sAY thats bad to own a monkey bty beatufil monks
This is very sad!! they need to be in the wild with their own kind. You are selfish and NO WILD ANIMAL should be held in captivity Do you have an enclosure outside for them? I am sure you delete these kind of comments.
I have a big outdoor cage they love to be in. They are NOT wild but captive bred, & are very domesticated. I have 2 so they are with their own kind. Monkeys can live very happy in captivity when raised by those knowledgeable in their care. If you find OK to have dogs but not monkeys it is hypocritical. They are both animals, just one has more needs than the other. All of which I am meeting proven by my ability to handle & play with them as adults. It all depends on the owner.
You should know that primates are alot more different then dogs. Primates are alot more INTELLAGENT THEN DOGS. Primates DO NOT need humans. They are alot more happy in the wild.
I can't judge and say you don't care. If you love them so much. Why don't you help out monkeys that are retiring from Labs help in a sanctuary or get one started on your own.
Maybe the love you have for the monkeys can be used for good.
I DO help in their conservation. Am a member of orgs which help primates. Funny you mention the lab thing b/c just today I recieved an email to help place 12 squirrel monkeys from research. Before you begin to judge others ask. I am 23 years old and just finished school but if you must know I plan to move from the big city to a farm area w/ enough land to care for displaced monkeys. Dogs don't need humans either, but they live happy w/ them. Monkeys are smarter & more work but also live happy.
You obviously have NO hands on experience w/ primates & believe all the false statements made by Animal Rights groups. I don't think people should by a monkey on a whim but to those who properly researched their care monkey can be very loving and affectionate animals just as any other domesticated pet. They do require more work than dogs but both are animals, and when their needs are met are happy. I live it DAILY w/ mine & speak from experience being around many adult primates 20+ yrs old.
I never been near one...to be honest with you. I don't believe everything Animal Rights Groups believe. I don't call the SPCA a bad source. Even though I have major issues with PETA.
Good luck in placing the monkeys in a better place then a friggin' lab. Good Luck with everything you do. I do wanna make a differance for our close cousins. Thanks for having this conversation with me.
Although most SPCAs do do good for animals, more of them are unfortunately succumbing to the AR agenda because of PETA's strong influence anti everything animal not just exotic pets. Remember SPCA deal mostly with dogs, cats, & farm animals, and most SPCA locations have never had contact with a primate from the pet sector so their knowledge is also from other publications/media not from experience. best of luck.
just wondering my dad had one when i was younger and he bought it at a exotic animal pet store in las vegas but that was 10 yrs ago and she only lived like 5 yrs cuz it had epelepsy. Can you still buy one with like a licence or what???
Yes you can still buy one depending on the state and city you live in. Each state has different laws. Some ban them, others require permits, and others have no regulations. First check with the Nevada Fish & Game department, then look at the laws in Las Vegas (whether they are banned or not.) Many major cities have banned their ownership. I do know that there are people in Vegas who have them, I just don't know if they're grandfathered in. Be sure you do your research. They are a lot of work.
squirrel monkeys live in groups of at least 30 monkeys. They need hierarchy and should live in big area's with a lot of trees and insects!
I work with these monkey's in a Dutch zoo. We got 2 ha's of land for these monkey's to live in... it's a forest with henches.. We feed them insects every day!
There are things they don't like, so you learn their rules. After the "break in" period w/ Sofie she's been a sweetheart. The only thing she doesn't like is diapering. Joey has his moments when in heat. I can tell he's in the "mood" & just leave him in his cage until it passes. Its all about reading them. A responsible owner knows their monkey's language and how to avoid confrontation so there's no problem. They are are entitled to have mood swings like we do. I have never been attacked by them.
You've more guts than I, I tell you that much. Primates are intelligent, that is a universally agreed point. But, the degree of how smart they are isn't. It's scary, I think at least, How smart these animals are. Not nailing shoes on the souls of the natives, keep the fauna you like, just not the pet for me, I'll let the zoos and such take care of em, haha
I have researched a lot on these guys and i wanted to ask if you found it to be worth it, the price you paid, the time you invested, the energy, was it what you expected? Are you satisfied? Oh and would you say that they are intelligent compared to a smart dog, are they trainable? Also were did you get them from, because squirrels are very rare to find these days...
If I had to pay double for them, & spend double the time & energy required I would in a heart beat. They are the light of my life. BUT 90% of people think I am crazy to put in the work required. Each person is different so I can't say that YOU would find it worth it. Yor have to be willing to dedicate your life to them as you would a human child. Yes they are trainable, but it takes a pro. Mine trained only to listen when I say "no" & biting it not acceptable. IMO they're smarter than dogs.
They are about 12 inches from head to tail. They weigh about 1.25-1.75lbs. They are pretty small for monkeys. Remember to research. They are A lot of work.
Yes, I do use diapers on both of them, but only when inside the house or when I go out with them. Sofie gives me a little more trouble getting it on her so she wears them a little less often.
No, I just carry a few extra diapers in my purse if its a quick oouting. I love big purses so they fit in there. If we are going to be out for 2 hours or more I do have one of the bags to put dogs in, just in case there are too many people, or they start getting tired. Basically, when I go out with them I take the Bag to put them in with stuffies and toys, extra diapers, a small container with food, and a small puppy bottle with water in it. Its kinda like going out with a toddler :)
Friend homes, malls, restaurants, beach, anywhere outdoors. Taking 2 out is hard so I take Sofie. I leave Joey w/ my housekeeper so he isn't alone. She's scared of Sofie, since we got her as an adult. Sofie is good with strangers as long as they don't grab her. I rarely let people to touch anyway. She sits on my shoulder, people pet her head/ hand, and gives them kisses. They aren't allowed to jump on people. I always have FULL control. I don't allow contact if they're restless.
If i had a mokey i would name him casmo

do you recommend keeping a tufted capuchin monkey in a neighborhood?
dyltwilight 2 years ago
A capuchin is small enough so that proper caging can be made in a residential neighborhood. Owners must always assure caging is safe for monkeys & neighbors keeping a primate properly contained & from escaping. Although a big yard is recommended. Not sure about on in an apartment though. Not enough space. and outdoor room from sun exposure. Key is safety of public & animal, as well as adequate room for caging.

thanks for the reply, I still have alot more research to go about capuchin monkeys. do you know anything I need to know about tufted capuchin monkeys. (other than their very hard work ; )
Please and thank you!

Could you please tell me if these are legal in Pennsylvannia?!?!? Thanks
Wisehemlock 2 years ago
I believe PA has a state permit system. Please visit my web site. I have more info on laws & their care. They are A LOT of work, and ownership should not be taken lightly. Research is a MUST!
xeileen916x 2 years ago
can they live outside in large enclosures and im sorry but i think that cage is far to small and cruel i wouldnt even keep a parrot in that.
teeno38 2 years ago
That isn't their cage. That is a temp cage I have for when it is too cold outside & need to keep them indoors. I live in Miami, so its only about 5 days a yr that its cold. I agree that cage is far to small for everyday use. I keep it in the proch & that is where we were. Their actual cage is 7 ft x 7ft x 4 ft. Either way, I will be building them another cage at least double the size, so 14ft x 14ftx 10ft in the next few months. IN other videos you see the other cage & new one in future.

I purchased mine from a breeder in Miami. I live in Florida (US). Some states have bans, others permit system, and others no laws. FL has a permit system.

Can people import monkeys from Canada
puppylover900 3 years ago
NO, but you would have more trouble locating a breeder from there. There don't seem to be any. You can't ring monkeys into the US from other countries, even the bordering ones.

With a monkey is it hard and difficult to take care of them like is it much harder then a dog or cat please respond i am trying to get as much as info as i can on their care Thanks
puppylover900 3 years ago
i worked with chimps and chimps are probally the most difficult pet to(legally)have
or are you talking about small monkeys like squirrels?
eclipse0987667890 3 years ago
what ever you guys do, do not get a chimp the with try to seduse you and if you have a pet (cat or dog) it with take it mouth and put it on is private and if the animal backs away the chimp with either kill it, slap it, hurt it, or pull him back in the spot
bottom line *****do not get a chimp******
eclipse0987667890 3 years ago
but little ***monkeys*** like ***squirrel*** are perfectly normal but they will masterbate
eclipse0987667890 3 years ago
yes it is harder to take care of but i personally think the challenge would be worth the reward and they need alot of maintnance but if your willing it is worth it please tell me whay type and i can give you lots of info
eclipse0987667890 3 years ago
yes it is harder but if your willing to do it its worth it
eclipse0987667890 3 years ago
its not easy like a cat or dog. you need to be there 24/7 for it. u need to check with the government and it costs around 7000$ for a monkey. and keep up with all the shots and buy cage which is expensive. and for daily walks you need to be careful and let nobody touch it especially kids because even a friendly scratch could result in rabie shots or being put down. having a monkey as a pet is more challenging than a baby or any pet. and lives for over 40yrs are you ready for that commitment?!.

Do u know which monkey that would make a good pet is the smartest of all them besides the capuchin
puppylover900 3 years ago
"(Note:Monkeys do need constant companionship to remain happy/tame)." How much time do you mean, Someone with then all day? And how much room do they need ?
thepetingzoo 3 years ago
You in the 1st year ALL the time. Someone or another monkey with them all day after that. They don't like to be alone. Needed space depends on the species. My squirrels are happy with their 7ftx7ftx4ft cage, but they are let out often. For a capuchin & larger I would not have a cage smaller than 10ftx12ft H x 10ft. They need room to be able to jump, exercise, & hight to feel safe.
xeileen916x 3 years ago
do u think a small chimp would be a good pet
puppylover900 3 years ago
NO WAY, ABOLUTELY NOT! Chimps are 7 times stronger than a man when adults. They can live 60+ years in captivity & require someone with experience such as an animal trainer. The do not make good pets for children, and those who do not have the land/experience requirements in order to meet all their needs. Also they are extremely endangered in their wild habitats. Add to that the cost of $60,000 to buy, plus another $10,000 minimum in caging strong enough to contain an adult chimp.
xeileen916x 3 years ago
Doesn't that contradict your channel statement about supporting allowing ALL exotic species as pets?
tuberabban 3 years ago
I do support ownership of ALL exotics by persons who are knowledgeable in their care, can provide for ALL their needs for the duration of their life, & they are captive bred. If the person has to ask me if they make a good pet that tells me they have not done the proper research at all, & therefore should NOT have a chimp as a pet. I read the 3rd sentence where I explain myself.
xeileen916x 3 years ago
to add to what she said i worked with chimps in the past and the are normally always is a bad behaivor even when playing
eclipse0987667890 3 years ago
Wich Kind of monkey would u suggest as a pet, And do u think it is cruel to have a monkeys teeth pulled
puppylover900 3 years ago
When they do bite how bad is the bite and with a pet monkeys can u still go out and have fun like sleep over your friends house or go to the movies or something like that and do u think a monkey would be good for a 12 year old. Thanks
puppylover900 3 years ago
It all depends on the size of the monkey. Obviously the bite from a hamster is going to be much less than the bite of a raccoon, or a cocker spaniel. Same principle with monkeys...The bigger the monkey the bigger the strength/teeth, the worse the bite. Any animal can bite. The key is training the animal properly so you don't get bit at all. I do NOT recommend monkeys as pet for persons under the age of 18, even 21, because they have so many changed to occur in their life still.
xeileen916x 3 years ago
It would be like having a human baby. You could go out to the movies after the monkey was asleep. And unless someone is at your house to feed it early in the morning you could not sleep over any where. Monkeys are a HUGE responsibility. I always tell teens to wait. Research on them, volunteer at zoos to get experience, and have fun in school/college. Once they are settled down look into getting a monkey... if they still want one.
xeileen916x 3 years ago
definitly not!!!!
wait until you are older- you probably could'nt get one anyways, no-one in their right mind would think you were ready for the responsibility- get a hampster
jdsharpe 3 years ago
question..... i know that monkeys bite but do they scratch alot? if so do they do it on purpose on on accedent????
bowietrackster 3 years ago
They may scratch you every once in a while on accident when jumping on you, or jumping off. But that is more with the capuchin and larger species. Mine never scratch neither on purpose nor on accident. My mother-in-laws capuchin however will leave me a little scratch here & there usually around my neck which is where she jumps on & off of. I don't even realize it until much later.
xeileen916x 3 years ago
A scratch on purpose has to be provoked like a bite would need to be provoked. Capuchins will use their mouth & hands if they feel threatened. Monkeys will bite, but they will warn you first that they are not content with the situation. If you don't heed their warnings then you can run into trouble. It is all about reading their vocalizations. My mother-in-laws monkey has never bit me just because, & she is 13 years old. (Note:Monkeys do need constant companionship to remain happy/tame).

can you get them in england and how much are they
hellight666 3 years ago
I am in the US so I am not completely familiar with laws and prices there. I belive that there are 3 species which can be acquired in England without a permit requiring experience. Squirrel Monkeys, Marmosets, and Tamarins. I would contact your wildlife department enforcement officer and get the right information from him. Remember they are a HUGE commitment, & a LOT of work.

ilovejesseumccartney 3 years ago
Theses squirrel monkeys are just plain cute. Do they become aggressive? How do you curb this aggressiveness? How do you keep them from biting you or kids?
silliegirl50 3 years ago
They are social animals and need companionship to be healthy and happy.
xeileen916x 3 years ago
shut the fuck up psychocalikitty u son of a bitch u have no reason to curse at her i have a squirrel monkey 5 of em they have a 50.7 sq ft x 79.3 sq ft enclosure for them they are ea fed 7 ilbs a day so ha now tell me they dont have a good home bty they were all rescues from South America Wildlife Station so now sAY thats bad to own a monkey bty beatufil monks
KingQuanit 3 years ago
This is very sad!! they need to be in the wild with their own kind. You are selfish and NO WILD ANIMAL should be held in captivity Do you have an enclosure outside for them? I am sure you delete these kind of comments.
psychocalikitty 3 years ago
I have a big outdoor cage they love to be in. They are NOT wild but captive bred, & are very domesticated. I have 2 so they are with their own kind. Monkeys can live very happy in captivity when raised by those knowledgeable in their care. If you find OK to have dogs but not monkeys it is hypocritical. They are both animals, just one has more needs than the other. All of which I am meeting proven by my ability to handle & play with them as adults. It all depends on the owner.
xeileen916x 3 years ago
You should know that primates are alot more different then dogs. Primates are alot more INTELLAGENT THEN DOGS. Primates DO NOT need humans. They are alot more happy in the wild.
I can't judge and say you don't care. If you love them so much. Why don't you help out monkeys that are retiring from Labs help in a sanctuary or get one started on your own.
Maybe the love you have for the monkeys can be used for good.
psychocalikitty 3 years ago
I DO help in their conservation. Am a member of orgs which help primates. Funny you mention the lab thing b/c just today I recieved an email to help place 12 squirrel monkeys from research. Before you begin to judge others ask. I am 23 years old and just finished school but if you must know I plan to move from the big city to a farm area w/ enough land to care for displaced monkeys. Dogs don't need humans either, but they live happy w/ them. Monkeys are smarter & more work but also live happy.
xeileen916x 3 years ago
You obviously have NO hands on experience w/ primates & believe all the false statements made by Animal Rights groups. I don't think people should by a monkey on a whim but to those who properly researched their care monkey can be very loving and affectionate animals just as any other domesticated pet. They do require more work than dogs but both are animals, and when their needs are met are happy. I live it DAILY w/ mine & speak from experience being around many adult primates 20+ yrs old.
xeileen916x 3 years ago
I never been near one...to be honest with you. I don't believe everything Animal Rights Groups believe. I don't call the SPCA a bad source. Even though I have major issues with PETA.
Good luck in placing the monkeys in a better place then a friggin' lab. Good Luck with everything you do. I do wanna make a differance for our close cousins. Thanks for having this conversation with me.
psychocalikitty 3 years ago

Can you still buy one with like a licence or what???
shiznani 3 years ago
Yes you can still buy one depending on the state and city you live in. Each state has different laws. Some ban them, others require permits, and others have no regulations. First check with the Nevada Fish & Game department, then look at the laws in Las Vegas (whether they are banned or not.) Many major cities have banned their ownership. I do know that there are people in Vegas who have them, I just don't know if they're grandfathered in. Be sure you do your research. They are a lot of work.
xeileen916x 3 years ago
squirrel monkeys live in groups of at least 30 monkeys. They need hierarchy and should live in big area's with a lot of trees and insects!
I work with these monkey's in a Dutch zoo. We got 2 ha's of land for these monkey's to live in... it's a forest with henches.. We feed them insects every day!
I hate it when people make monkey's there pets...
Breedbek 3 years ago
How much are monkeys? I've always wanted one, and when I get my own place I'm buying one.
McTokes420 4 years ago
are they agresive at times?
newyorkny5023 4 years ago
There are things they don't like, so you learn their rules. After the "break in" period w/ Sofie she's been a sweetheart. The only thing she doesn't like is diapering. Joey has his moments when in heat. I can tell he's in the "mood" & just leave him in his cage until it passes. Its all about reading them. A responsible owner knows their monkey's language and how to avoid confrontation so there's no problem. They are are entitled to have mood swings like we do. I have never been attacked by them.
xeileen916x 4 years ago
You've more guts than I, I tell you that much. Primates are intelligent, that is a universally agreed point. But, the degree of how smart they are isn't. It's scary, I think at least, How smart these animals are. Not nailing shoes on the souls of the natives, keep the fauna you like, just not the pet for me, I'll let the zoos and such take care of em, haha
Either way, beautiful animals.
DaScatman 3 years ago
I have researched a lot on these guys and i wanted to ask if you found it to be worth it, the price you paid, the time you invested, the energy, was it what you expected? Are you satisfied? Oh and would you say that they are intelligent compared to a smart dog, are they trainable? Also were did you get them from, because squirrels are very rare to find these days...
nickpp89 4 years ago
If I had to pay double for them, & spend double the time & energy required I would in a heart beat. They are the light of my life. BUT 90% of people think I am crazy to put in the work required. Each person is different so I can't say that YOU would find it worth it. Yor have to be willing to dedicate your life to them as you would a human child. Yes they are trainable, but it takes a pro. Mine trained only to listen when I say "no" & biting it not acceptable. IMO they're smarter than dogs.
xeileen916x 4 years ago
how big are those monkeys? because i want to buy one squirrel monkey

They are about 12 inches from head to tail. They weigh about 1.25-1.75lbs. They are pretty small for monkeys. Remember to research. They are A lot of work.

do you use pampers with your monkeys
askiaa 4 years ago
Yes, I do use diapers on both of them, but only when inside the house or when I go out with them. Sofie gives me a little more trouble getting it on her so she wears them a little less often.
xeileen916x 4 years ago
when you take them out do you carry a diaper bag
askiaa 4 years ago
No, I just carry a few extra diapers in my purse if its a quick oouting. I love big purses so they fit in there. If we are going to be out for 2 hours or more I do have one of the bags to put dogs in, just in case there are too many people, or they start getting tired. Basically, when I go out with them I take the Bag to put them in with stuffies and toys, extra diapers, a small container with food, and a small puppy bottle with water in it. Its kinda like going out with a toddler :)
xeileen916x 4 years ago
where do you go with them?
askiaa 4 years ago
Friend homes, malls, restaurants, beach, anywhere outdoors. Taking 2 out is hard so I take Sofie. I leave Joey w/ my housekeeper so he isn't alone. She's scared of Sofie, since we got her as an adult. Sofie is good with strangers as long as they don't grab her. I rarely let people to touch anyway. She sits on my shoulder, people pet her head/ hand, and gives them kisses. They aren't allowed to jump on people. I always have FULL control. I don't allow contact if they're restless.
