and then... they made us 'citizens' conveniently in 1917 (when US entered WWI) so we can get killed for them! i'm currently in iraq and it's because of our fucked up economy that drives huge numbers to the military, because there is no other choice.
My name is William Fernando Rios and you can find me on facebook just like that William Fernando Rios. You Tube Threads suck because you don't have the space to deal with any subject in any detail. I think I can School most people on Layman's Terms about the Political Situation/American History of P.R.
Welfare State? LOL! Cute considering the political/economic shackles of a colony and the Contributions Puerto Rican Born Americans have made to this Empire by way of Blood, Sweat AND Tears.
@tainoaz Nobody's calling P.R. a "welfare state" but at the same time they are very much like Americans and love their social programs. Find me any elderly American who doesn't like Medicare and Social Security.
So the Puerto Ricans are only human like Americans and they of course want social programs as does everybody.
It's true that they were a "colony" of Spain...not so much of the USA. And don't forget that they could have went communist and ended up like Cuba...or with corruption.
The title to this video is wrong!! It should be named "Destruction at work in Puerto Rico"! THInk about It! This is nothing more than the "Here little boy, I have some candy for you"!
Respond to this video...
This film does show a strong bias in its "educational" goal......Puerto Rico in the 1930's -40's was not a very pleasant or happy place to be in...my parents and grandparents were there.
Be it as it may despite all, in 100 years the USA has done more for Puerto Rico than Spain did in 406 years...took, took, took and gave back nothing. If not for the USA ..Puerto Rico would be another Haiti.
Puerto Rico would not be another Haiti because the time that France withdrew from Haiti, they had almost nothing while Puerto Rico had an economy granted not a strong one but better than Haiti's.
@Unknownkid2 Yeah and take a good look at each and every one of those countries and see how they "survived" ....all Third World Countries for the most part,
Why do you think that those countries are plagued with poverty huh? Because countries like the United States and Europe made them that way.The developed countries prosperity depends on those who have nothing.
@NativeNewYorkGuy lol using a line 100yrs old what are you 5... you shouldnt be talking around here with a nick like natvie NY guy.. NYC is the worst and dirtiest city in the universe so shut the fuck up already
Boris Vermont did a fine job editing this propoganda piece. What about the 10,000 year agro-cultural legacy of the Indigenous Peoples of Boriquen, conviently overlooked in this USDA film.
Typical MO of the 500+ years of subjucating colonization, leaving me with my yuca, yuatia, malanga, batata, y mi mujere. Democracy has offered my tribe forked tongue politicians who never worked a day up in my mountains living off the land. HIs Story, not mine. Thank Boris for the fine editing job...
This video is a product of its time. One can't be angered by such things, being that no one thinks of this of our island anymore. YES spanish settlers, and a bunch of other europeans. There are no indians still alive no matter what we as a people tell ourselves. yes, they were absorbed into the gene pool but very little of them remains. the idea of us being a hard working people and that we are humble is what allowed us to migrate to the US & not be harassed in the same way that others were.
ye good point, tainos will always have respect and be remembered for naming practically everything on the island as well as their additions to the culture, but most of them died a long time ago and the taino dna is spread very thin, almost all of them were killed in slavery and the rest died of european diseases
Remember we have Taino blood from our ancesters. It is true that many Taino men were enslaved and killed but the women (las Tainas) were spared for they were taken by the Spanish men to satisfy their sexual needs. I call it rape. It is why we are one third Indian Taino.
Actually the Puerto Ricans enjoy being a US territory because they have had atleast 5 or 10 referendums since 1960 to vote for independence...and each time they vote down independence.
They also don't want to become a 51st US state. They like being a territory because they get social programs like food stamps, welfare, national defense, clean Govt...and yet they maintain a certain independence.
The GDP per capita of P.R. is far higher than Cuba...
@EdwardRommel You Tube Threads Suuuuck it's why I barely engage in any intelligent discussions here.
I'd like to discuss this in depth... look me up on facebook as William Fernando Rios I live in Arizona and I am a Wanna Be American/Puertorrican History Professor ; I
Christopher columbus was a pendejo!!! and the guy narating this is also a pendejo! Gee-wiz Earl look at the way they live! Lets give them welfare and enable them and then take away there land! This is bullshit video!!!!
descendant of spanish settlers? This is a half-baked truth as it ignores the blacks and indians in our heritage. It seems like an effort to present puertoricans "acceptable" to the average american citizen.
To the uneducated one. It is not what we see with our eyes that is driving the force but the driving force behind it. The problem has always been with the International Banks. The International Banks are the Institutions that control Countries. It was true in 1898 as it is today. Guess which countries don't have International Banks? N. Korea, Cuba, Iran, Syria, Lebanon. At one point during the part of 2 decades there were more. Remember Afghanistan, Iraq even Panama. What happened to them?
@NativeNewYorkGuy WTF are you talking about, criminalidad? mother fucker NY is the worst and dirtiest city in the whole world filled with crack, whores, aids, and all kinds of crimes and you gonna talk about PR, please if you dont want to come to PR dont come we dont need pussy mother fuckers like you here stay in your ugly ass dirty city
@puertorricane Listen, NYC is a world class city, your island was, is and will always be a dump. The crime rate is very high and lets not even go into the drugs, whores, and all the other issues.
When even the locals are afraid to walk around in broad daylight in the lowliest of hick towns, you know something is wrong, very wrong.
Progress is very slow in the average islander's mind.
Trust me there are far better places to visit than that filthy boring island.
@NativeNewYorkGuy world class in aids, crack, cocaine and all kinds of crimes.. NYC is filled with filth and all the low class from around the world end up in that ugly ass city.... NY aint got shit on PR.. not for a million dollars would i change PR for NY
@puertorricane I guess you haven't been here and if you have you must've been hanging around your family in the ghetto. Good! stay on the island, its better that way. Meanwhile make sure you're home before dark and all the windows and doors are securely locked...oh wait a minute that's in the daytime.
Some 46 million people from around the world visit NYC each year ,,,if you go to Europe take a map to show people where you're insignificant island is located, as no one knows.
Exactly what purpose does your island serve? What is it good for? You're pretty much a welfare state or non state for that matter. Are you aware that you are more DEPENDENT on US funded public assistance that any State in t he union? If the US pulls out tomorrow you'd all turn to cannibals.
The US doesn't need you and you are costing us money.
The place is a shit hole, filthy, miserable and violent and really no one outside the US even knows where it is or heard of it,
@puertorricane not for a million dollars would you change PR for NYC?...you can't, no one here accepts Food Stamps, "Los Cupones" = Puerto Rican currency.
By the way I hear the island has been annexed by the Dominican Republic, the report is that you are becoming a minority on your own island.
EDIT: I must've hit post before I added this portion on my reply
As for the food stamps comment, that's not even fair.. we can talk about people of MANY different ethnicities and nationalities that take advantage of the system. My comment is in no way shape or form to justify Puerto Ricans who do it.. my point is that many different people do it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You guys are all silly, sure USA has done a lot of bad stuff in history, and perhaps we violated your rights, I'm not an expert on the subject. But what do you guys want to do NOW? You guys can't make up you minds, so I guess you'll stay a commonwealth.
Our resources like minerals should be charged adequately. Puerto Rico resources should be used to benefit Puerto Rico not the United States Economy. Stop being wage laborers for them. If we are going to be wage laborers let us be our own wage laborers.
These current governors are worried about Voting for a president that has nothing to do with Puerto Rico. Our agenda repair schools free education and free health care system. Barter system we can try. Communication with poverty areas and increase tax on private companies. Foreign to our nation to pay of the debt.
Who cares what blood we are the fact is that Puerto Rico needs to become independent to continue forward. We have all types of different blood and we need to focus on rebuilding our nation from the bottom up.
When I was applying to the Ph.D. in the states, all the colleges treated me as an international student. PPL dont even know we are citizens, My roomates are not, and they have as much benefits in school as I have. That citizenship is just B.S. There is no difference.
Siempre! ARRIBA LA JUSTICIA!
Puerto Rico was Settle by the Spaniards but later Settlers came to Puerto Rico from Ireland, Italy and France and if you don't believe this go to yahoo and in the search bar write: Irish migration to Puerto Rico, or French migration to Puerto Rico. Where do you think we got our Italian, French and Irish and Dutch last names? We are a mosaic of all this, including African and Taino Indian for Flavor.
Oh and another thing dont forget the lebanese people came to puerto rico as well. But, also the french that were from Haiti and louisiana were the ones that went to Puerto rico.. Italians, were the Italians that came from the island of Corsica...
Canito, totally wrong, recent genetic study of the puertorican population had shown that more than 61% of our genes is taino, 26% from Sub-Sahara Africa, and 12.5% are Caucasian. This study was published by Dr. Juan C. Martinez. Unfortunately, for those that really think that a fair color skin makes them white, the truth is that we are more something else than white, and who is saying this is a grankid of an Italian immigrant.
Actually thats only mitchondrial DNA, which is half. if you research the y chromosome, u'll find its over 70% European. therefore the majority of the population is white/mestizo.
Its funny how black puerto ricans like to give only the mitchondrial dna, if u gave the full dna results it proves your the minorities that you are.
I grew up in PR, more people look like me than tego calderon. stop giving HALF the DNA results to make yourself feel better.
Do you feel that being white is superior. I dont know why you come to insult me, as being black or taino is bad n I've to vindicate my selfesteem with these facts. You're so wrong. One of the thing I praise of my country is that is not divided b/w white/black/indian, and that everybody knows their mixed heritage. Y tu abuela donde esta? The Y cromosome just tell the stoy of male and not the whole population. What happens with the kids of a black girl and white man? Answer this
Unfortunatly it seems that we have a couple of racist Puerto Ricans around Youtube who feel as if all Puerto Ricans are like them. They stereotype people of diffrent races and locations.
I am Nuyorican and it gets aggrivating dealing with them but I dont take anything they say seriously. My people should embrace the positive not look at the world with hate and negativity. I know most Ricans are Humirde... but to see these Racist is a disgrace.
I'm proud of my European and Taino ancestry, but I'm gonna defend Puerto Rico, when people lie and try to say were all black its a lie, the DNA testing and census info make sense black ricans r less than 30%
I'll answer it. The Y chromosome is 70% European. The X chromosone, which is the other have of the populations, is 60% Amerindian. The chromosomes that come from Black people is in the 20s for both men and women.
right on the money, must be an Anthropologist, but it does not take a professional to see this--only the person who sees but superficially and is unfamiliar with the features of the Amerindian is oblivious to this self-evident truth
There was a time, were blacks were the mayority in Puerto Rico. But in 1815, after the Haitian Revolution, the Spanish oficials determined that a mayority black population would lead to rebellion. So they implemented the "Real Cedula de Gracia", which stimulated a large European migration that made Puerto Rico mayority European.
I wonder just how much of this Propaganda is true? I'm half Puerto Rican, but I never learned much about my heritage. I'm also Mohawk Indian. I have a very good reason to distrust America, So I was just wondering if even half that stuff was true?
HEHE, that is a quite mix, but yes ashamedly it is, we are a slaved colony of USA. There is no other way to put it. The truth always hurts, and it hurts me see my own country struggled the way has been struggled since early 1900 but the reality is that. We hope it changed to the independence for the better of our country and who ever wants to get food stamps and not work they can moved out of our land....
No sean tan mamaos!!!
Sea la madre de los gringos, They just destroyed our beautiful island. Hey, our jibaros knew how to do Agriculture before this idiots invaded our island. QUE VIVA PUERTO RICO LIBRE Y SOBERANA, ABAJO LOS YANKIES
Diras los hijos de los americanos. Porque sin los gringos Puerto Rico seria otra Cuba, Republica Dominicana, etc....Appreciate the good of the US not the negative. People would kill to have the benefits that Puerto Rico has with the US on their side.
I am a "mixedrace" person from the UK. I'm black (Trinidadian)/white(Italian/French) and many people say I look Puerto Rican. :-) There are not many people in the UK who are mixedrace, so it's strange to think there is some island somewhere full of people who probably have similar genetics to me! hehe, I might visit one day, just to see.
a puerto rican is just someone who is from the island. Here in PR you see every race, white, black, and mixed. BUT it doesnt matter because they are all PUERTO RICAN.
There's actually no specific way to look Puerto Rican, Arcain101. We're a mixture of different races(Latino is a culture) I'm a Puerto Rican with red hair and green eyes for example. There are also Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico with black skin. We're very mixed, you have that part right.
so look at it this way, the song "lamento borincanco" wasnt written under spains rule, it was written under US rule, when puerto ricans were brought to the brink of extinction from hunger, practical slavery, and eventually forced sterilization...
next time you say puerto rico is where it is thanks to the USA, consider all i have said and then decide who we should really be thankful and loyal to. PR and Puerto Ricans or the USA?
. in 1952 PUERTO RICANS got together and made the commonwealth, finding a way to make the US give us funds and let us have an economy the only way this regime allows (federal funds and coupons, because we cant make any commercial deals without the US getting a LARGE piece of the cake).
in 1917 we become american citizens and the starving puerto rican men are used as soldiers for World War I (were not american citizens because the US realized we deserved it, we are american citizend because they found a great supply for soldiers whom they wouldnt mind loosing). then, until 1952 the puerto rican people suffered and starved while the US and its big companies took all the profit from the sugar cane and took up all the land.
Starvation? Well what was going on under the Spanish yolk? US citizenship arrived in 1917 and if you did not wanted you could resign it. After 1917 all puertoricas are US citizens by birth whether you like it or not. If you do not like it you belong to less than 5% of the puertorican people.
Being the minority 5% does not mean we are wrong, just that the mayority swallowed the lies, and yes, we went hungry until the 1950's. Luis you take time to make silly comments here yet you seem suffering from informational starvation yourself.
once the americans came, saying they brought democracy and freedom they immediately put in a military government and imposed their law and order on puerto ricans. they forced english in school, made the puerto rican flag illegal and had puerto rican children now singing and anthem and pledging alligience to a flag and country they didnt even belong to.
Under the Spain yolk there was no puertorican flag. The only flag was the Grito de Lares Flag. As for military goverment goes, any land adquired by means of War is administer by the military branch until a transition is made. Therefore your comment does not assume reality. English was taught because Puerto Rico was a Territory of the US and Spanish teaching came back with the Commonwealth.
I am born and raised in Puerto Rico and educatein Puerto Rico and the states. It is sad to see how during the cold war they painted a rosy picture of the puertorican reality. If you could understand the song, the true and harsh reality of the Puertorican people. Never the less if you see the pre 1898 misery and hunger that was in Puerto Rico under the yolk of Spain you will understand that we were better off with USA. I am proud of being a puertorican but I am also proud of being an american.
Luis: The americans invaded Puerto Rico and Cuba under a Lie. If you read history you'll notice that Puerto Rico and Cuba were given autonomy by the end of 1897 but the United States did a terrorist act against itself to declare war against Spain and have them deliver Cuba and Puerto Rico. The thing is that the Cubans fought with the americans over it because they said that they had won the war not the americans
The idea of the "Mambises" which was the cuban guerrillas was to liberate Cuba and then go to Puerto Rico and Dominican republic to liberate them from Spain.
But the pact between the Americans and the mambises was that they will "give" them Cuba in exchange for Puerto Rico. That's why the Mambises stopped fighting, even though the majority of that Army were Puertorricans and Domincans. Cubans were minority.
A land favored by God is true.

It's true that they were a "colony" of Spain...not so much of the USA. And don't forget that they could have went communist and ended up like Cuba...or with corruption.

1flautista 1 year ago
Respond to this video...
NativeNewYorkGuy 1 year ago
1flautista 1 year ago

This video is a product of its time. One can't be angered by such things, being that no one thinks of this of our island anymore. YES spanish settlers, and a bunch of other europeans. There are no indians still alive no matter what we as a people tell ourselves. yes, they were absorbed into the gene pool but very little of them remains. the idea of us being a hard working people and that we are humble is what allowed us to migrate to the US & not be harassed in the same way that others were.
luis06211986 2 years ago
ye good point, tainos will always have respect and be remembered for naming practically everything on the island as well as their additions to the culture, but most of them died a long time ago and the taino dna is spread very thin, almost all of them were killed in slavery and the rest died of european diseases
1PrettyB0y1 2 years ago

Canito, totally wrong, recent genetic study of the puertorican population had shown that more than 61% of our genes is taino, 26% from Sub-Sahara Africa, and 12.5% are Caucasian. This study was published by Dr. Juan C. Martinez. Unfortunately, for those that really think that a fair color skin makes them white, the truth is that we are more something else than white, and who is saying this is a grankid of an Italian immigrant.
morenia20 4 years ago

Unfortunatly it seems that we have a couple of racist Puerto Ricans around Youtube who feel as if all Puerto Ricans are like them. They stereotype people of diffrent races and locations.

I'll answer it. The Y chromosome is 70% European. The X chromosone, which is the other have of the populations, is 60% Amerindian. The chromosomes that come from Black people is in the 20s for both men and women.

¿Y no estamos jodíos ahora?
ccarlos07 4 years ago
No sean tan mamaos!!!

Porque sin los gringos Puerto Rico seria otra Cuba, Republica Dominicana, etc....Appreciate the good of the US not the negative. People would kill to have the benefits that Puerto Rico has with the US on their side.

ccarlos07 4 years ago

I am a "mixedrace" person from the UK. I'm black (Trinidadian)/white(Italian/French) and many people say I look Puerto Rican. :-) There are not many people in the UK who are mixedrace, so it's strange to think there is some island somewhere full of people who probably have similar genetics to me! hehe, I might visit one day, just to see.
Arcain101 4 years ago
You'll love to see it. I am also Puerto Rican but look more white than anything even though my ancestry is Spanish, Taino Indian & African.
sotonemuel 4 years ago
a puerto rican is just someone who is from the island. Here in PR you see every race, white, black, and mixed. BUT it doesnt matter because they are all PUERTO RICAN.
chingao098 4 years ago

PR and Puerto Ricans or the USA?
hooplapr 4 years ago 2
. in 1952 PUERTO RICANS got together and made the commonwealth, finding a way to make the US give us funds and let us have an economy the only way this regime allows (federal funds and coupons, because we cant make any commercial deals without the US getting a LARGE piece of the cake).
hooplapr 4 years ago
in 1917 we become american citizens and the starving puerto rican men are used as soldiers for World War I (were not american citizens because the US realized we deserved it, we are american citizend because they found a great supply for soldiers whom they wouldnt mind loosing). then, until 1952 the puerto rican people suffered and starved while the US and its big companies took all the profit from the sugar cane and took up all the land.
hooplapr 4 years ago
Starvation? Well what was going on under the Spanish yolk? US citizenship arrived in 1917 and if you did not wanted you could resign it. After 1917 all puertoricas are US citizens by birth whether you like it or not. If you do not like it you belong to less than 5% of the puertorican people.
LuisBoriken 4 years ago
Being the minority 5% does not mean we are wrong, just that the mayority swallowed the lies, and yes, we went hungry until the 1950's. Luis you take time to make silly comments here yet you seem suffering from informational starvation yourself.

once the americans came, saying they brought democracy and freedom they immediately put in a military government and imposed their law and order on puerto ricans. they forced english in school, made the puerto rican flag illegal and had puerto rican children now singing and anthem and pledging alligience to a flag and country they didnt even belong to.
hooplapr 4 years ago
Under the Spain yolk there was no puertorican flag. The only flag was the Grito de Lares Flag. As for military goverment goes, any land adquired by means of War is administer by the military branch until a transition is made. Therefore your comment does not assume reality. English was taught because Puerto Rico was a Territory of the US and Spanish teaching came back with the Commonwealth.
LuisBoriken 4 years ago
i have to disagree with some of the comments here...
pueto rico was not worse with spain. puerto rico had just been given autonomy and was going to boom right before the americans invaded.
hooplapr 4 years ago
and never given the chance to boom by itself, 'cause they invaded...

LuisBoriken 4 years ago
Hipothetically speacking, if there were a war between USA and PR, who would you support? The answer will tell you if you are boricua or gringo.
ccarlos07 4 years ago
Luis: The americans invaded Puerto Rico and Cuba under a Lie. If you read history you'll notice that Puerto Rico and Cuba were given autonomy by the end of 1897 but the United States did a terrorist act against itself to declare war against Spain and have them deliver Cuba and Puerto Rico. The thing is that the Cubans fought with the americans over it because they said that they had won the war not the americans
josemrosa 4 years ago
u idiot!1 after the spanish american war, spain surrender puerto rico and the philipines to the united states. not cuba.
nenedemd 4 years ago
The idea of the "Mambises" which was the cuban guerrillas was to liberate Cuba and then go to Puerto Rico and Dominican republic to liberate them from Spain.
But the pact between the Americans and the mambises was that they will "give" them Cuba in exchange for Puerto Rico. That's why the Mambises stopped fighting, even though the majority of that Army were Puertorricans and Domincans. Cubans were minority.
