The Holodeck is limited in that while the worlds it creates are thereoterically infinite, there's only so much about you it can change. The ultimate entertainment invention would be the Matrix: all the world-creation powers of the Holodeck, but with the additional ability to alter yourself with just as much freedom, since you're no longer constrained by your physical form. I don't see how you could improve on that.

My personal belief as to why religion exists, in the atheist sense, would be to control people's reactions. Without pressure of spiritual consequence, actions would go extremely unchecked for the more uneducated masses which would institute violence untold and actions without moral constraint which could and may be purely in the persons own interest, blind for other's safety and feelings.
