  • The year was 2000, my age was 19, and my days of MMO gaming began. EQ held my heart for 6 years and until my long term guild finally fell apart I was committed. Much fun as I have with modern games, they'll never be as hard or as community driven as Everquest classic.

  • This game is magical, and no matter what they do to "improve" it, it will always be a unique fantastic experience for all players.

  • OH GOD THE PIXELS, THEY'RE IN MY EYES! THEY'RE IN MY EYES!

  • You all do realize this game was "awesome" and had a "great feel" because you were probably 10+ years younger than you are now. Ontop of that, this was all new, undiscoverd, & whatnot. Basically, my point is.. these feelings come from the time you played it, rather than the acual game itself.

  • @mchlor - That is so true. I would be standing at the Qeynos gates helping a few newbies out getting started. I would usually hand out free Bronze/Leather Armour, Greater Lightstones and Backpacks, it was great to help your fellow players. You would also get a lot of "soandso is inspecting your equipment ... " popping up and /tells on where to hunt. Ah those were the days!

  • Over 1000!

  • this vdeo realiy brot back a lot of good memories when gameing was about quality and the community not about graphics and mass market

  • This is by FAR the BEST MMO to date. Original Everquest pre-Luclin... Even after but honestly, is you played this game when it came out you where a part of something really special.

  • probably the best game ever made, where such a feeling in the game that is unreal to describe.

People lived for the game, the discussions could go on for hours, you had a reputation in the game, your task is to make the best of it.

Even players from big guilds in EverQuest, was with and did wow, even then, it could be as good as EverQuest..

    sry for very bad english

  • I wanted some nostalgia, and so resubbed about a year ago.... seeing the old zones i that I wanted to see redone... killed it for me. Cancelled the subscription in an hour. Who the hell decided that those zones needed to be redone... grrr..

  • @terskip I hate to hear that the zones were THAT bad that they made you unsub. Sorry they robbed you of the nostalgia. I'm in the process of getting ready to play it again, I hope the remade zones don't put me off that much. It really is a fun friggin game.

  • sigh

  • It looks so life-like, amazing graphics man... I'm just speechless.

  • they should make the everquest 2 site have the new everquest with the upgraded graphics but you scroll down on the homepage and you would be able to play everquest classic

  • Ah memories.. I went from playing Ultima Online to Everquest.. It didn't take hours upon hours to clear stuff.. no running all over the dam place.. and you could always find people that would welcome some company.. Wow is just full of stupid, illiterate, tards that never grew up or still live with their parents even though they are older enough to be on their own.

  • I started playing when scars of velious was released, i personally think shadows of luclin killed EQ.

  • If this is old school EverQuest why is the sound not in MIDI?

  • @Rayvn7 That song can be found in Midi form. If it means a great deal to you. 1) Find and download the midi. 2) Mute this youtube video and play midi music in the background as you press play.

I'm more interested in the murals at DIA (Denver International Airport) those are trippy check them out as well as the airport.

  • @Rayvn7 that is midi. notice its all keyboard

  • Gotta love the old days, back when groups actualy existed and fights were rough.

  • 12 Race and 14 classes and now we're reduced to 8 with about 6 classes

  • There was 100% alot more than 1,000 people.

  • It makes me sad to think that it's all about how "shiny" games look these days. People I talk to in newer games say they would never try old school EverQuest because it looks so terrible. Spoiled rotten, I say! Never again will a game be as story and community driven as EverQuest 1 was. I appreciate some of the things added through out the years, but it has just strayed too far and now I am long since retired. Long live Classic EverQuest, the way Verant intended.

  • yay old freeport , i remember Dying to that npc hiding in the Duckwork that would at some point in the EQ day run through the guard entrance without guards noticing and kill me instantly while i medded afk. XD good times.

  • wow back then this game even looks better than the present day shitty runescape

  • timeless Everquest

  • When I see those icy regions that I had encountered with my shaman....it feels like home

  • pretty amazing how well it turned out when you realize brad was/is a heroin addict

  • pre-kunark all the way

  • Graphics where just fine back then. Oh how epic would it be today. Same orginal EQ just with the updated Graphics.

  • amazing til luclin

  • id give anythin to relive playin this game back in the day . i member it took me HOURS to find my way out neriak , i stayed in nektulos till like level 15 lol before i finally discovered the commonlands and the derv camps, then some nice druid lady came by and ported me to a dif zone to hunt in

  • I don't think games will ever be like this again, this was one of the best moments in human history. IMO the best possible life would be to play the original everquest by myself for a few years and get all the characters and items i want, then slowly have people join me for hard kills and raids. But it would have to be people who were not familiar with games like maybe prisoners, and I would teach them to survive in the new world and we'd go on adventures everyday. Then MAYBE add some expansions

  • @BeyondTHEGrave111 that is a strangely vivid request.. your idea game setting is to play with prisoners and show them the ropes?

  • lol I loved it, made people think or else you got penalties and the vastness I felt running through huge zones and having to dodge this mob and that, can remember trying to get from Fel to Qeynos at lvl 3, dam took 2 days, nothing will ever be the same.

  • Love this game, started in 2000, played off and on since, but yes the first years were the best, the days when druids and wizards would good for porting, no maps, no light source non magical weapons, Good times, great people, miss the old spell effects could tell the level of the spell by the sparklies from the caster,; a big blue circle/ring for a heal spell meant it was greater healing + or hp buffs having green, red, and yellow in them.

  • I'd pay about a trillion dollars to bring this game back.

  • It all went to shit after velious. luclin was tolerable.

  • @unseenxxx i completely agree!

  • Best MMO ever, I have so good memories of it even if I stopped like 6 years ago... No other game ever felt like this.

  • @Aekh You are one of countless people who feel that way... Everquest started it all, but sadly, MMORPG's will NEVER be the same.

  • @Aekh Literally couldnt agree more.. i watch this video and just was spitting out all the zone names and have this intense feeling of nostalgia.. i quit probably 7 years ago but still RANNDOMLY, like now, look back just to remember how it was THE BEST GAME EVER MADE.. no questions asked

  • Damn.

I played EQ for like 9 months from 2000-2001, nothing will compare to the vastness of the Greater Faydark and how DARK everything was there. I musta fell off the tree tops a hundred times.

  • I did the same thing. Truth be told I never liked the game too much, but miss some of the people I met on another game who migrated to this one. We had some good times.

  • "You have no idea which direction you're facing".

Modern MMOs need to return to basics.....

Ban teleports to wherever you want to go - make people travel!

Ban UI maps and compasses - make people learn the zones!

Ban XP debt - make people run back for their corpse to loot their possesions.

  • @condemned75 I agree with you 100% - i wonder if we will ever see devs go back to there roots. Sadly, i think not - i miss EQ (

  • Yeah it really created a sense of fear in some zones, trying to run past really high level mobs, knowing you would lose ALOT of exp if they agro'd. Thats what made it fun though

  • I loved the spell graphics

  • Some good memories, but also a lot of bad. the hybrid classes got shafted in those early days and shared the "exp penalty" to their group. 2H weapons didn't work for the longest time. Great for its time and I'm glad I played it, but also glad to have found something more fun.

  • I find it amusing that back then you could get away with a player base of 1000 people.

Now you're lucky to get someone's attention with a player base of 1,000,000.

  • A million or a thousand don't matter if you can solo through most of the game. Unlike WoW, EQ, was totally dependent on playerbase and new comers to keep the game rolling. One reason is because you rely mostly on groups depending on what class you picked.

  • @revilor True, and that was EQ's eventual demise. EQ servers, before they hid the population were about 2,000ish on a daily basis.

  • @DogLeroy I think you misunderstood what they mean by 1000 players. There's 1000 players per server. They had up to 700k player base for a long time, but it's true that is low nowadays. Every MMO copied from this game heavily.

  • NOSTALGIA TO THE MAX!!!

  • Mmmmmm... Good times. Good times...

  • Wood Elf Chicks mmm...

Agree with TheJadeEmporer. After Verdant sold so went the soul of the game. I'd take cheesy graphics/strong gameplay any day, over great graphics/easy max leveling in 2 days.

I remember sitting with players to learn a language. I remember quest that needed dedication. I remember CASUAL guilds. I remember finding a group without being dissed for my class/race combo. I miss the experience of finding new zones and the apprehensive chasing you till you zoned or died.

  • TRAIN !!!! BOAT !!!! :(

  • purely epic how i use to remeber it

  • I loved EQ velious was the best area's I went too the giants there were done very well and the war with the coldain.

  • EQ was badass till they decided to "upgrade" the graphics

  • Ditto.

  • Yuppers.

  • @darkbeat101 so true, from release to velious was the best. everything after that was shit.

  • I think a solitary tear just trickled down my cheek. Top 5 things that ruined EQ: Maps, Instances, PoK, Defiant Gear, too many safe zones (pvp).

  • this is some amazing memories, started playing in the beta! still do to this day a little bit, god it has changed so much, i miss the old times

  • last i played EQ was about 6 months after eq2 came out. went back to check out what had changed to say hi to old friends. they were all gone, the feel of the game was lost to me. after playing eq2 going back to eq proved impossible for me. i remember the old days fondly, but EQ is dead for me.

  • desert of Ro.... Sand giants and Spectures, still gives me the shiver in my back thinking about it... woah.. A Sand Giant hits YOU for 240 points of damage, A Specture hits YOU for 403 Points of damage, A sand giant hits YOU for 397 crotical points of damage.... dang im dead?!?! /shout who pull the SG to dock?!

  • It was great seeing the old Freeport.

  • Despite the fact that the graphics are from ten years ago, they actually still aren't bad. I mean yeah, compare to modern games you won't see things like real grass or anything, but I think the graphics honestly gave EQ a large part of it's feel, I don't know why, it let your imagination fill in the rest. I started playing when I was 11, back in old classic days...10 years later my longing to play the game again as it was then is quite strong. What it is now is pitiful and I quit in I think 2005

  • geeze i remember those days started Eq as 3 year old and is by far is my fav mmo and wow and all the others werent even as fun

  • Grobb will rise again!

  • Hah, I remember all the time as a magic user staring at the spell book while getting mana back. The game was amazing when it came out, I still think of how I was blown away the first time I saw that huge chain bridge that crosses between West Karana and East Karana.

  • i plaed from the start till about two years ago .. the whole original world is maped in my head(dosent mean i remember all the names of the zones) but yeah i <3 old eq ..

  • I racked up over 100 days of playtime on this game in the first year it came out. It was such a unique experience in my life back then. The whole concept of mmos was so new back then, everything was fresh, to be able to party with other real people on a game and work together gave off a certain feeling of satisfaction. Man, that game was brutal back then though, I remember dying from getting disconnected would lose you 5 hours of grinding, I'd be cursing the rest of the day when that happened.

  • and no one had ventrillo, it was all typing.

  • I havent played in six years =(

  • I was 9 when I splayed EQ, so magical, so unforgetable that it actually hurts to see what it has mutated in to.

  • :cries softly:

  • Reminds me alot like zelda oot graphics wise.

I love how all the old game graphics looked, nowadays they are just shitty fps games that 13 year old kids go crazy over.

  • I remeber the days on Innoruk with the Gnomish Elite, and Fear The UnGodly

  • Oh wow this brings back memories. Worst part about EQ when it first came out was that the computer we had couldn't support the textures, so we literally played the game with no textures for a couple months. Was totally worth it though.

  • So true, I remember I had to upgrade 3 things on my computer to actually play Everquest with BELOW AVERAGE frame rates. Video Card, Memory, and Modem to 56k lol good old days when a game didn't run perfect and you get the human element of extreme difficulty, but is offset by the reward and status you get in EQ for all your hard effort. (Note: Experiences pertain to 1999-2001 Everquest period.)

  • Man I wish this game wasn't before my time. Now I'm in the generation that's addicted to WoW...lame sauce...

  • But when eqclassic releases , you will be able to experience what you missed. :)

  • Its good to see the game again in this video. I miss old EQ as well. Most of all I miss the friends. Ryaxxe, Connyr, Gens, and so many others from Saryn, you all rocked.

  • i miss eq so much=(( made so many friends, i used to just log on a talk to them sitting in various towns =( if anyone is from the tribunal server and knows Grimlim-59 dark elf Shadowknight Message me..or if anyone still playes eq or if the Classic is stil alive MEssage me and inform me how to get on it please

  • God i miss this game. It's been mny years now since i played, but the feeling i had when playing this game and the sound effects really did it for me. I've tried about every MMO out there and they just lack something i can't ut my finger on. WoW made the genre explode and im afraid people will forget about the feeling EQ gave you and mmo' s will only be easy mode from now on. Quite depressin really.

  • I played EQ for 6 years. Played WoW for 3 years and now Warhammer Online. Everquest will be forever the greatest game I have ever played. I miss the sounds of the spells, the feel of the zones, the sense of community. It was more than just a game. Those of us who played it in the glory days will never forget the sense of adventure we all felt.

  • try playing shards of dalaya it is a great game just google it

  • I hear that... I'll never forget running an iksar from Cabilis to Felwithe at level 2 only to get owned by a wandering orc and spawn all the way back in cabilis... good times. I miss the original EQ before any expansions... it ruled...

  • "I miss the original EQ before any expansions... it ruled..."

I think a good 95% of players of classic EQ would agree with you. Once Sony took over, it was just another cash cow. At least Verant cared a little, although most people cursed their name the first couple years. Sony just wants money, plain and simple.

  • man i miss eq so much i remember the good old days from raiding to just regular questing me and my friends havn't been that close in a long time

  • The classic EQ game was amazing and I never played anything like it when it came out. I used to get depressed when the servers would go down.

  • Oh Man! I so miss EQ. those where the younger years of MMORPG. Golden age! It revolutionized online gaming. It's like the invention of steam engine. The impact it made to online games.

  • I have good memories of this game but it took too damn long to level, seriously I played this game non-stop for nearly a year and only ever got to lvl 35

  • I've played WoW, Vanguard and Warhammer online.. none of them hold a candle to EQ. That game made you actually feel like you were in another world. Nowadays MMOs fail to achieve that. I fear I'll never find another game like EQ :-/ I miss Norrath!

  • Well,..vanilla WoW was very good also. Untill they started watering down WoW a lot. Outland simply sucked a fat one and it only got worse.. now there is no freedom in how to play whatsoever, everything is scripted very strictly.

I really love the old EQ sounds and spell effects, really takes me back and I remembered exactly the layout of every place you showed in the vid which was pretty funny to realise.

  • combat theme was much better back then

  • No one still has made a better base MMO.

  • Was this an actual promo video from back then, or player made? Because at the 1:27 mark it says you can choose from 12 races and 14 classes, then it shows shots of all 12 races, followed by shots of an Aviak and a Gnoll before moving on to talk about spells. Is this just a mislead, or were they actually thinking about making aviaks and gnolls playable back then? I began playing a month after release, and I admit I wasn't too into it for a few years, but I don't remember anything about that.

  • I really miss EQ

  • It's ok. I know how you feel. There are about 400,000 of us who feel the same way. You just had to be there in the first 4 years of the game to truly understand..

  • Soccer: Indeed. Im going to be getting an Everquest tattoo soon mostlikely. Going to work a map of Faydwer into a sleeve i'm getting.....

  • they didnt call it evercrack for nothing. i use to log in 70 hours a week. :( oh how i miss the good ole days of fun , danger, pure entertainment of a game. you never get that in any other mmo.

  • I know how you feel. Nine years later I'm still an incurable MMORPG addict. I've played countless free month trials of different games, spent 3 years in DAOC, 4 years in WoW... nothing comes close to capturing the feel of EQ.

  • I miss EQ :( It was pure adventure and not such easy game like WoW or EQ2 ... oh man ... watching those vids let me feel sad about what happend to this genre of games...

I know how exciting it was when I played first time a darkelf - got killed by a kindslayer on rallos zek server :P

Later ... Kunark AddOn, Scares of Velios... all those nice weapons with Avatar effect ... camping much time for jboots :P

But well - I think the change came with Planes of Power - it wasn't the same anymore ...

  • Hell yeah i played on ralloz zek.. 80 Barb Sha.. Ziglar.. Those were the days!!

  • Same here. I think EQ has such an awesome ambiance and atmosphere about it. That essence is what other MMOs fail to deliver on.

  • WOW! 989 studios? LOL! MMO's and games in general have come along way since EQ1 came out. I didn't start playing till 2004 but for some reason when I first went into Qeynos, I felt like I was home. WEIRD!

  • eq classic was the best now eq sucks

  • Just a quick note: EQClassic was NOT stopped. The website was temporarily taken down. The project is strong and getting closer and closer. :) Drop by IRC ( #eqc on irc-peeringsa-net [replace -'s with .'s]) and see for yourself. Don't listen to the people saying it was shut down.

  • Wow I miss those days...

  • If you want to play on a classic everquest server message me

  • wooot cant wait to play again to :D

  • lol old everquest battel musice

  • I can't wait to play again!

    ~Zerik

  • google EQClassic :P

    EverQuest as Verant Intended
