  • why does he say "good one on you"? 4:35 ?? what did Ricky do, it's not clear...

  • Can't say Zebra

  • This is a personality clash. Shandling is insular and dry as a bone. He also thinks Gervais is stepping on his answers (which he is). Gervais is unusually honest and wanting to be liked. The power struggle where they both stand up is intriguing.

  • Brent Sanders Round 3

  • It's funny that Ricky brings up not being asked if he wanted a coffee as Stephen Merchant once told a story about Ricky not getting him a cup of tea and when Stephen asked Ricky why he didn't get him one Ricky replied "I assumed you didn't want one." hahahaha

  • "It's alright, I didn't want one. Fuckin' hell..."

  • This is fascinating. I can't tell if it's scripted.

  • strangest laugh at 6:20. Sounds like it's looped but it's not.

  • reading these comments in this context makes me understand how arrested development got cancelled.... why i can't go to a hollywood movie and stay awake.. and how larry the cable guy has a career... if you don't get how intimate, honest and musical this is for comedians of this stature who have such obvious respect for each other, you should sell your computer and stop giving your retarded opinions on anything to do with actual reality. hey... big brother 17 is on... better leave now..

  • I think Shandling is a douche in this, but still kind of funny. I can't stand Gervais, I think Shandling might be seeing through this weird concept series -- Ricky Gervais licks his heroes' arses.

  • I really don't get it. Is Shandling really being a complete asshole or is that his idea of being funny? Ricky seems nice and funny, but Shandling is an enigma to me.

  • OVERKILL!! LOL

  • 3.40 ahahahhahahaha

  • You guys are all sooooo dumb.. Watch Gary Shandlings material.. He's funny because he's awkward and can think of witty things on the spot.. This interviews not a flop its hilarious! and nobody owns the other. It's supposed to be this way. Watch between two ferns with Galifinakus. Same premise... If you don't find it funny you just aren't smart enough to understand it.

  • @socaballa22 between two ferns is a set up scenario for awkwardness though, it's completely scripted to be awkward and hard to watch through humour. this lacks the jokes.

  • Ricky acts like Karl lol

  • stop with the owning comments. nobody got owned for fucks sake. i could point out plenty of points where either of them puts the other down. just comedians being comedians

  • Garry owns Ricky

  • Yanks don't get English\Aussie humour. We make fun of everything. It's sad they are so uptight about racial humour. Sigh. Same thing happened with Harry Connick Jr on an Aussie show this year. Get over it

  • II think this interview is awesome, its like a clash of the two and given all the info at hand the fact that this is supposed to be one of Ricky's heros and yet he keeps trying so hard to out do him also he isnt quite sure if its all above board because shandling is playing so well just proves that its a fail on Ricky's behalf.btw im a gigantic gervais fan!!but still its rick who approached this wrong and shoulda picked up on the vibe at the time a bit better, especially as hes the interviewer.

  • impress your hero by annoying the shit out of him.

  • Ricky doesnt even know that this isnt tea time.

  • I dont get why people think this is awkward ...have you ever seen the office ....its his kind of humor :D

  • I love the way Shandling takes Ricky to school all through this. You do all realise it was an act right?

  • the top comments on each of these segments keep switching alleigances on who was a cunt

  • wow

  • You can't say Zebra!

  • Regardless of how established Shandling is in the comedy genre, Ricky sees him as a hero, which is why he's acting like a kid at christmas. It's his idol. It's sort of like if I could meet Ricky, oddly enough, I'd probably act too excited. But shandling doesn't need to be such a fucking cunt to him all the way through this.

  • @MayContainMorons

Ricky's problem here is he shows up acting like they are already best buddies. As soon as he walks in the door, he intrudes on Shandling's space.

Ricky is also a really bad interviewer. His technique is very poor. Fair enough he was slightly nervous as he was meeting one of his heroes but he should have known that Shandling was never going to live up to his expectations.

  • @MayContainMorons Shandling is being himself. That IS his character. He's not being a cunt to Ricky, he's giving him exactly what he wants. It would be kinda boring if he just sat there answering a bunch of questions.

  • @daPlumber702 I'd love to know how people find that funny though. It's crap humour.

  • After just watching "The Larry Sanders Show" streaming on Netflix and then realizing just how much Garry Shandling has done in comedy for nearly 40 years, it seems he really deserves more than this. Gervais is NOT worthy of trying his "cheeky" British humour here (I'm British) . The sarcasm and "Taking the piss" style, simply rub Shandling the wrong way! Garry Shandling has done EVERYTHING in comedy in the U.S. and is a bit of a legend. Gervais should've understood him more.

  • I love Gary but he doesn't like people to feel comfortable around him apparently. I'm not sure if he's trolling Ricky or not.

  • Ricky seems like a kid who is looking for approval.

  • Is there a prize if I make it to the end? :/

  • he didnt laugh at any of rickys jokes! so awkward, not the funny awkward either lol!

  • Garry is just entertaining himself, he doesn't give a shit about the interview, and thats why this is so funny.

  • Garry is so annoying and rude.

  • You can really feel the discomfort

  • you can't say zebra!!!!! fucking hysterical

  • 'You can't say Zebra'... How could Shandling not laugh?

  • Gervais thinks that his 'Don't mind me! I'm a cheeky chubby from Reading' act plays just as well everywhere - not here obviously - its at times like this i feel that Steve Merchant is the real brains of the outfit

  • I honestly can't place if this is awkward or high level. There are little things, like the coffee sequence and others that make me feel like it's all a set up.. but then Garry coming back with a veiled threat about boxing earlier, and seeming to dance around a suspicion Ricky is racist.

I think the decider is whether the 'oh we've never met before' at the beginning is staged or genuine. They seem to get friendlier just right too.. if it's a put-on it's pretty masterful. I'll have to rewatch.

  • @sphoney i feel empathy for you, this is just good comedy off the cuff, not the comedy you are conditioned to like, but still comedy

  • @mondaywar Wow, that's condescending. You have no idea what comedy I like or what conditioning I might have had.

It wasn't an act, anyway. Check out interviews, I looked it up and posted in part 5. Shandling was off-guard and taking offence, Gervais was trying to get laughs and getting a rise, both in their own words.

Congratulations on being a blowhard, though.

  • @sphoney that is just garry's sensibility, taking uncomfortableness to the edge, that was the beauty of the larry sanders show

  • @mondaywar Agreed, but that's not what was going on here. Seems a lot of people are so desperate to see the rapport and get the joke that they'll imagine one (I have empathy for you, though, it's just conditioning). If you're going to do that you might as well watch Big Bang Theory.

"I was trying to do something not comedian-to-comedian but man-to-man. He was trying to make an entertaining show, which I'm capable of; I just wasn't doing it in that moment. We all needed to stop." - Shandling

  • @sphoney i think it was , you think it wasnt, (its caled a disagreement) but i will say, that when ricky was on Opie and anthony a couple months with louis ck, jim norton , and jay mohr, they talked about the interview, and the consensus was that it was very funny .........listen here >>>>watch?v=Shmp3y7PVyw

  • @mondaywar Hey, what you laugh at is your business. Shandling considered it a car crash, anyone seeing a comedic rapport from him is imagining it (including Ricky there, iirc).

Your first comment was supercilious horseshit, though.. and a patronising 'its caled [sic] a disagreement' isn't helping your case any.

  • @sphoney fair enough, but did you listen to that interview i was talking about, they talk about this interivew, and its a pretty dope audio if youre a ricky gervais fan

  • @mondaywar I am as I type, in fact. I started it for Louis CK more than Gervais. I got a bit Ricky'd out, but this is good. Sounds like he's saying what he said in other interviews 'it was out of control and I was giggling/making it worse'. Good atmosphere in the studio though. :)

  • @sphoney yeah that show is pretty dope, and now that i listened again, ricky did say that garry said "i tried something and it didnt really work" so maybe they werent happy with it, but i thought it was funny

  • @mondaywar Yeah man, for sure. It was a good find, thanks for linking ^^

  • i like this interview because he throws ricky off beat which is funny to watch

  • You understand that Ricky Gervais was talking about the humor of awkward moments, and immediately after, Garry Shandling gets out of his chair and then creates an awkward situation, thus playing off of Ricky Gervais's own theory of comedy.

  • Garry Shandling is just pissed at being passe. Ricky Gervais is the next generation of comedian/comedic actor and just plain funnier than Shandling has ever been.

  • Read that Mr Shandling said it was a misunderstanding on what sort of interview it was and its nature. That being said, his attempts to strong arm Gervais like a 'big shot' were childish, and fair play to the annoying Ricky for noticing and trying to turn it to humour each time

  • He should have ended the interview when Gary said, "I'm sure that you're not happy casting any Jews for your show," and stood up. Right then would have been the end of it for me. gah then at 8:55 I was think surely he would offer him some coffee, that's just fucking polite if you're getting a drink to offer your guest one as well. But at least Ricky stood up for himself.

  • I feel bad for Ricky, to meet someone you idolize and be treated so shitty. It's like being kicked in the nuts by Santa.

  • I get the feeling Gary might be bringing about awkward moments in an ironic way, sort of an homage to The Office. If he is, it's very clever. If he isn't, he's an arse.

  • @brianv00 Why would it be an homage to the Office when it was the essence of Shandling's Larry Sanders Show?

  • @dhead22 Fair enough, he's probably just an arse.

  • Whats wrong with you people!? Its comedy gold from both sides of the Atlantic. There are great some great lines from both of them. Very enjoyable for me.

  • Shandling is wasted on things like seroquel, celexa, and abilify

  • Oh god. This started terribly and then seemed to get on track and then Ricky said the thing about bingo and it seems like that Garry just deflected his damaged ego into completely shutting gervais down throughout the rest. The eskimo thing was clearly a little bit ricky did, and a funny one at that, but shandling answered with a deep personal insult. The moment where he like fake stabs at ricky's hand when he puts it on his armchair kind of says it all about the dynamic of this interview.

  • What an absolute fucking cunt Garry Shandling is.It doesn't matter if he was joking or not; if he wasn't joking, then he is a rude, unfriendly, uncooperative cunt, and if he was joking then he is an overly-analytical, pretentious, dry-shite whose comedy is absolutly unfunny and joyless.. for a comedian, he just made my world a very very slightly more depressing place...

  • I think it's good that Ricky wasn't phased one bit by Gary's awkward moment creation skills.

  • Groan. I could not watch all of this. Got as far as Ricky not being offered a coffee. Gary Shandling was a comedy hero of mine but now that's over. Ricky's a bit self-indulgent sometimes but I felt sorry for him in this interview. I thought the interview with Larry David was soooo much better - Larry has so much class and can show Gary a thing or two about manners and modesty.

  • Garry behaves like a little kid trying to prove he's smarter than Ricky "Wow..I never thought of why people live in the North Pole! Is that the stuff you think about?". That's just a ridiculous thing to say! Garry is absolutely talentless compared to Ricky and I'm sure he knows it hence the stupid INFERIORITY COMPLEX behaviour!!!!

  • Garry Shandling has always been one of the least talented comedians

  • @moosheep Wow, what a generalization! Guess what, I am an american, and I'm not "desperately" trying to explain Garry's behavior. I think Garry is a dick to Ricky and extremely rude. He has absolutely no excuses, and it's not funny. I just blew your mind, didn't I?

  • whoaaa holy shit 6:57 - 7:00 is one of the creepiest things ive ever seen

Gary is completely neurotic and is projecting his mental issues. In that little time frame you can see him try to piece together symptoms of what he thinks he can diagnose Ricky as.

  • I find it interesting that most of the comments are negative towards Shandling. I was impressed with him. Gervais has to be one of the luckiest men alive (and a sad commentary on current notables)-- uninteresting, not especially funny and possessed of a truly annoying nervous laugh.

  • what a prick that shandling is....

  • It seems my reading of this interview differs hugely from the previous comments. The coffee incident is inspired. Garry asks Ricky if he finds awkward situations funny, then immediately gets up and makes himself a coffee without offering one - in a sense saying 'well here's an awkward situation; is this funny?'.

  • What does Gervais say at 2:41?

  • @garotadeprograma14 "Fucking hell"

  • double laugh @ 6:20

  • you cant say zebra.

  • Shandlings a bit of a psycho. I reckon he is on purpose doing the interview from hell.

  • Adding water to coffee was Shandling's funniest and/or most psychotic moment.

  • i think it's 2 giants of comedy bouncing off each other, and i found it very funny.

  • i have to agree with ricky , this was awkward.

RICKY: dont you have any questions?

  • Oh god make it stop. Two more to go...

  • i think shandling is just making the interview an uncomfortable situation. i think its funny actually, gervais is explaining how he;s a fan of awkward moments and how people get out of them. shandling is just providing the actual awkward moment.

  • hilarious interview

  • fuu-kin elll

  • shandling is just a bitter old man. ricky was hilarious haha

  • 9:07 his cut. lol

  • Wow, Ricky really tried his best to make the interview to look good, but it is so painful and awkward to watch.

I seriously had to read all the comments from part 1, 2 and now 3, to know if the interview was real or just a set up, between Ricky and Gary. I can't bare to watch more of this.

  • Ricky = Legend Garry = Spiteful old man

  • Garry Shandling is trying way too hard. If he just relaxed it would have been more comfortable for the both of them.

  • I love how Garry Shandling makes it so awkward for Gervais.

  • When Gary throws in his opinion that Ricky is doing work that has already been done and is therefore "indulgent" and basically useless is where the interview turns sour. Ricky is offended - and rightly so - but focuses his anger on not being offered a coffee. Never tell a man his work is of no value - especially when he is interviewing you, and you are a 'has-been'.

  • Larry David uses that same uncofmortable humour, that's why Ricky got on so well with him in their interview - I think this Garry guy (whoever the hell he is) is uncomfortable because he's talking to someone with a better sense of humour, a sense of humility, and can laugh at himself

  • "you can't say zebra" ... whoosh, straight over the head, if he'd stop being so uptight and analytical about everything Ricky says, he might come off as personable, as it is he comes off as an uptight dick

  • 'Because it looks like you dont cast any Jewish people...good one on you..good one on you.' 'Are you happy now?' 'Good because make sure you cut where it looks like you won.'

    Garry is brilliant. Really brilliant.

  • "You can't say Zebra...." *silence* BEST MOMENT EVER

  • ok, I wasn't completely sure if they're being awkward with each other until Ricky got upset about not being offered a cup of coffee (up to this point, I figured it might be "very" dry sarcasm). It's gotta suck to find out your idol is a douche.

  • @JanicM They say that if you adore or idolize a celebrity you should NEVER meet them in person...they'll never meet your expectations and ALWAYS let you down. Poor Ricky...Gary was a Jerk to him.

  • Ricky is hilarious.

Gary is just being an unfunny bitch.

Nice try Ricky, but clearly your idols are threatened by your talent.

  • This is shockingly uncomfortable.

  • Ricky Gervais is trying to just be human and a nice person to talk to and Shandling is trying to be some kind of wierd GOD or something.

  • Gary is wierd.

  • This must be rated as one of the most weird and uncomfortable interviews of all time. Is Mr Shandling on crack?

  • This Shandling character thinks he is some kind of god, and Ricky is a nobody. When infact Shandling is not that well known outside of America.

  • @uncled39 dont try to tell the americans that, they'll desperately try to explain his behaviour as "comedic genius". how is it genius to attack someone for jew jokes. what a retard. he's not schooling anyone. still its a funny interview

  • bloody hell what the hell is up with garry shandling.??! He's a bit of a weirdo isn't he?!?!?

  • If I had been Mr Gervais I would have told the Banana Split that he was a prick and the interview was over. It shows what a professional Mr Gervais is.

  • wow, this a tough interview.

  • This is just Shandling being weird.

It's not witty enough to be "uncomfortableness" humor

  • Garry just schooled Ricky in the comedy of "uncomfortableness." For the entire interview.

  • @Tanzarian 100% - I love Ricky Gervais but yes, that was one hell of a schooling

  • are not the butt of the joke in Gervais' comedy.

The point in exploring those areas for Gervais is to show the anxiety and mishandling of those situations, thoughts and taboo subjects by people who misunderstand the anxiety / sensitivity about them to begin with.

It's to expose the mishandling of them, to pry into people digging holes for themselves and badly making it worse. At no point did Gervais actually make fun of the holocuast, I think he's taking it too face-value by the LOOK alone.

  • I'm a big fan of both of these men, a bigger and longer fan of Ricky's but The Larry Sanders Show is of course masterful and a huge inspiration to Extras...

But I think that Garry, maybe partially down to cultural 'execution' or nuance in comedy, I think that he's got slight contempt for Geravis due to misinterpreting the point of Gervais' humour.

For example "holocaust jokes" when in fact, there is no holocaust 'jokes' in that episode at all. And the event, or the woman are not...

  • "kin hell...how rude!

wow Shandling is a true pig. That aint no act.

  • Don't think Gaz got British humour

  • otherwise it would just be jewish haha.

  • The GQ article with Garry sheds some light. Basically Ricky comes in all keyed up and Garry is on a big "in the moment" and drop the act stage of his life. You know the smiling face and fake excitement everyone uses - Garry didn't like it and was trying to get Ricky to drop it.

That and he didnt like Ricky's holocaust (Garry's Jewish) and disable persons jokes (Garry's brother died very young).

  • Shandling seems like a prick. It doesn't poison my enjoyment of his work, though.

  • most awkward interview ive ever seen, mainly because it goes on for so long. im not used to shandling's humour, was it legit?

  • Wow. I wasn't too familiar with Gary Shandling, but I can see he's clearly a pompous ass who refused to let his ego down for a few minutes. Sad...

  • To be fair... it was an army helmet.

  • "lost the will to live"....FFFUUU....LOL

  • You know, I LOVE The Larry Saunders Show but Shandling does come off as wierd and unlikeable in this interview. But really, does an artists personality outside of their work really matter?? They're artists--plain and simple. What Shandling is like inside his home isn't really important, although it is always a little dissapointing when you learn they're douche bags.

  • "you cant say zebra"....one hundered times funnier than whatever joke that asshole is telling

  • Truly cringe worthy.

  • It's funny that anyone would think that this is rubbish....I could watch random shit on youtube like this all day....well at least for an hour or two.....

  • is Garry taking the piss? I can't figure it out haha

  • @8484terry Yeah, he is. Everyone on here thinks he is serious. I think this is hilarious.

  • @8484terry lol Yeah, I think that because Ricky has made his name from comedies which focus on people's reactions to difficult situations Garry is being as difficult and rude as possible, in order to derive such reactions from Ricky. I don't know much of Shandling's work, but I think that's what he's doing. As Gervais said at the beginning, he doesn't do many interviews, so it's probably out of respect for Gervais that he agreed to this one, rather than because of a desire to undermine him

  • @8484terry I can't tell either. I hope he was.

  • @8484terry He probably doesn't even know himself.

  • @8484terry he admitted he was trying to. but he failed pretty hard right?

  • @8484terry yes he is

  • most cringeworthy moment: 0.05 when gervais jew bashes: 'it would just be jewish' shandling's immediate look of incredulousness is whoaah hard to describe... zen is the best word

  • they are clearly playing each other. the coffee thing shows that ricky is perfectly aware of what shandling is doing

  • shandling sounded like a proper "feel sorry for me" jew

  • It seems that Shandling is upset about some Nazi material that Gervais has done previously.

  • "get outta your head"lol, they said that in rehab

  • Shandling's face is a graveyard of failed plastic surgery.

  • @hippotoast

Jesus, did you see it before?

  • Shandlings had his PMS.......

  • shandling only wants to go so far with comedy then at some point turn around and have a honest discussion

  • "Get out of your head". Shandling is right, Ricky doesn't connect with him and doesn't really communicate here.

  • al13nm

if you think that ricky 'belittles' karl, then don't take the effort to download the xfm shows and listen to hours' worth of footage...

  • Now we are approaching Absolute Zero

  • This is geniously funny.

don't care if it's real or not, funny is funny

  • did somebody shit in shandlings cornflakes that morning?

  • he should have met jerry seinfeld, it would have been funny

  • "can you honestly say that you've never thought "Why does that Eskimo live in that ice?" " --- O:M:G

  • @equalitykills "...No."

  • lol

  • This is a brilliant interview. Both people are obviously playing to their strengths and it works.

  • I don't find this as awkward as people are making it out to be, or that Shandling comes off as a twat, he's definitely playing him though, it's very interesting.

  • Fascinating!

  • Interviews like this don't come very often, that's why it's good

  • shandling seems like a such a twat, i was gonna torrent his larry sanders crappy show... but i think i wont now. what a shithead.

  • @astroboirap Dont be so rash regarding Shandling. If you have heard the old XFM radio program Gervais use to do, you would quickly realize Gervais genuinely enjoys humiliating and degrading other people for his own amusement. He tortures and mocks, humiliates and belittles Karl Pilkington on those programs, and it isnt the least bit amusing.I give Shandling credit for seeing through Gervais.Since hearing those shows I have lost a lot of regard for gervais and will not be buying his products.

  • Garry puts Ricky in his place in this interview thats all. When Ricky looked back at the video on his disable joke, he didn't laugh did he? Just goes to show its an immature joke by a frankly immature guy. And the office was good show not a great show, and the main reason for that was Stephen Merchant.

  • I can not believe that Gervais is so ignorant, he's sitting there discussing the humour of uncomfortableness and awkwardness and doesn't realize that Shandling, who's obviously a fan of Gervais work, is pulling that type of humour act in the interview. It's hilarious and everything Shandling does is totally intentional.

  • every word out of that tool's mouth is offensive. "get out of your head" etc. "you have moments when you don't think". ricky must have had a contract to see this out.

  • every time ricky reaches over to touch that douche he jerks away

    uhh i cringe

  • Shandling = QUEER DEFENSIVE FUCKWIT. Gervais should have cut the interview in the first few minutes.

  • AGREED!!

Gervais it too good in the first place to do this interview with this douche. If someone is a comic, they should always be able to laugh at themselves, along with everyone else. (As Ricky does) Shandling is no where near the same level as Ricky.
