Also you can grind your black powder to a "Flour" fine grain and your explosion will react a lot quicker; resulting in a louder report. Just buy a ceramic (No static) mortar and pestle for like 5 bucks so you can grind your powder.
The difference between using pvc and steal isn't hardly explainable, i made a bomb the other day with black powder and a 1 in by 6 in steal pipe, and the feeling and sound it makes probably put your bomb to shame, and 1 in by 6 isn't even very impressive. What a waste, use steal next time.
steel caseing allows for the buildup of preasure, therefore resulting in a larger explosion, ive made plastic cased bombs that barely pop, but using a steel case with the same amount of powder can prove deadly.
Does any body realize that the amount of black powder doesn't matter, since the pvc pipe has a maximum pressure which is the same, no matter if you use air, co2, dry ice, or black powder... in fact black powder reduces the amount of space for the high pressure gas buildup. If you use steal it will be much more powerful.

While you are correct about the pressure ratings, you are incorrect about black powder created an overall reduce in pressure. Black powder not only liberates gases (thereby basically destroying your point), but also releases energy which excites the atoms and further causes the surrounding air to expand.
My point is, that the steal container will break open before all the powder has been converted into a gas and then burn off in the open atmosphere without causing additional pressure buildup. This means that instead of there being space for gas to compress, there was a non-compressible solid there. So instead of 1Liter at 1000PSI, you end up with 0.5 Liters at 1000PSI plus extra powder to burn after.

1 in sch 40 pvc has a burst strength of 440 psi, 3 in sch 40 is closer to 100 psi... you can get louder results by using smaller pipe man.
