why does kratos want to kill zeus and the other gods?

Two reasons:

1. They didn't take away his nightmares of him killing his family.

2. When Kratos refused to cooperate with the gods when he became the new God of War, Zeus tranferred Kratos' powers to the Blade of Olympus and killed him with it.

Tired of being betrayed, he escapes Hades to seek vengence.

GOW 3 does come after this and Chains of Olympus takes place during the ten years Kratos was serving the gods. Aside from seeking vengence against Ares and looking for a way to have his nightmares taken away, he had to deal with certains gods that were causing trouble since it is forbidden for the gods to declare war on each other.
