If the BBC wants to meet requirements to all parts of the audience, it should SCRAP the license fee, put their sport on a specific sports channel, get rid of all the soap operas, and put back PROPER end credits, instead of putting on irritaing commercials for other programs! Love your videos, you speak well, I would love to do a video giving my opinions on various stuff, unfortunately, I'm not that good at speaking out.
the BBC should be cut - it's the propaganda department of one of the political parties (Labour) and yet everyone is forced to pay for it. it's also so enormous that it is damaging the private sector (that's the sector that actually PAYS for all the public spending) in areas like local news and local newpapers. How can anyone justify that twat Thompon getting £900k, let alone the Jonathan Dross types and their countless millions. BBC should be forced to pay for super fast broadband for everyone.
Homosexuals are left wing in England, but in places like South Africa, most homosexuals are right wing (ie. they stand with other whites against black rule). So it is not a surprise if any homosexual in england generally supports the BBC because the institution has done more for gay rights than Peter Tatchell.
My issue with the BBC is that they use the guns of Government, to extract money for a service. You are not forced to but burgers from Mcdonalds or books form W.H.Smiths; so why do the BBC get to do this?
i understand the fact that there are little problems such as wanting to watch or listen to different shows at the same time, that is solved by recording. this may take a huge turn for the worse as there are many popular shows on each of the BBC channels by different audiences and with the lack of channels to put the programms on, there will be complaints that a series has been cut. in any case, they should have consulted with the public as they base what they do on us. arn't they?
I think that the old programs that the BBC did where the best. Since the BBC was created its become a big part of the UK. The BBC is for the whole of the UK so they should keep with trying to provide for all ages. We pay for them to produce so they should provide good quality programs that will be interesting to every one like red dwalf (the orginal episodes - although bad acting it was funny)

I would rather have 'propoganda' as some people call it come from a semi-government organisation, a government which we have democratically elected, which represents us and thus the BBC has a remit to the public interest. All things private tyrannies interested in only the profit motive do not do. They just want your money in the quickest and most efficient way possible.

Do you have a problem with people choosing what they watch? American's are choosing to watch fox news over competing news stations, that is their right.
Of course the BBC has its biases, like any media and news organisation. I just think its prime benefit to society is that unlike the commercial networks its propoganda is not entirely corporate, it doesn't indoctrinate us every 15 minutes with advertisements and because it doesn't follow a profit motive it can provide things to more niche markets not catered for by the market. It is an extremely valuable national treasure and cutting back its dominance will not create more competition.
In your opinion, why should everyone in the UK have to pay for the BBC that "has its biases"? Your from the United States so your not forced to pay... The BBC was set up to be impartial and is far from it, therefore it has blown its remit and should be scrapped.
I'm from Australia, moved to London several months ago but I've been a fan of the BBC since I was a child when my English mum sat me and my four sisters in front of British telly shows (trying to indoctrinate us I think).
Over the years I came to respect different aspects of the BBC i.e. their journalism, radio content and of course their version of Pride and Prejudice. I think it's unfortunate that they are cutting back, especially in Asia but other than that my opinions are pretty apathetic.
Tax does not pay for the BBC! The license fee does. License fee payers.
Channel 4 also has a remit set for it & I'm sure they must feel indebted to the BBC for giving part of the license fee to them to help with the digital switchover (another question is Channel 4 not over stretching itself, as it obviously makes no money) so I'm sure they'll pick up these teenage audiences, as they've always had the younger adult in mind.
Technically, sure. But saying "taxpayers" would really mean people who pay income tax/NI/whatever and is an inflammatory phrase. License fee payers refers to people who own TVs and people who pay tax and people who pay license fees are mutually exclusive.
The British Brainwashing Corporation is ,along with the rest of the mainstream media, propaganda. You will never find the bigger picture on such outlets. Research the new world order.
@RifledBarrel if the BBC had to fund itself, it would start advertising. the only reson that the BBC doen't use advertising is that we, as TV lisence payers, pay for it, and the only reason that we, as TV lisence payeers pay for TV id that the BBC does not advertise. thats sort of the point.
In all I think the bbc does a good job its sporting events coverage and nature documentaries are second to none in my opinion. Free content is always going to exist now with the internet. Certain sacrifice's have to be made though to try and remain competitive and as these radio stations have low audience figures sell them off or drop them. Sad to hear they are cutting the budget for syndication of American shows such as Heros.
It is ridiculous that everyone who owns a television in the UK should be taxed to pay for a television corporation that they neither want to watch or agree with. The BBC is insidiously left-wing and many in the UK don't agree with its political slant. To put it another way you shouldnt by law be forced to pay for The Guardian before you are allowed to read The Telegraph.
I dont like anything on the BBC or on TV other than Simon Cowell's shows which I get to watch for free on youtube.
I dont own a TV or pay for a TV license, my parents dont watch it either, they watch sky, but need to pay for BBC to get sky. As with The Asian Network, no one in my (asian) family watches or listens to that, they prefer to watch Asian channels on Sky.
So in essence your family is paying £139.50 a year to subsidise someone else's choice of entertainment. Same here I don't watch the BBC but still have to pay this bonkers extortion racket or get threatened with a court appearance and a fine.
I would, its the truth. The BBC is nothing more than a repeater of the official version of events. It gets the majority of its news from government statements and two central news agencies, the Rothschild owned Reuters and Associated Press. Any journalist that tries to report outside the framed narrative gets the sack. There are good people who manage to get bits of the truth out in the mainstream media, but they can only show the twigs not the forest.
Jeremy Paxman summed up the BBC Licence Fee (tax, extortion...) the best.
"The idea of a tax on the ownership of a television belongs in the 1950s. Why not tax people for owning a washing machine to fund the manufacture of Persil?"
I live in Australia and am pretty affected by the cut. A lot of what I watch/ listen to is made by the BBC, particularly 6 Music.
Not being a British taxpayer, I don't fully understand how much they spend on the BBC, however, with all the job-cuts and loss of original content I cannot see why the savings is worth it.
They plan to invest the money they save back into original content, so that their own production goes up. So they aren't technically making cuts (my bad for saying that) in terms of money spend, but just redistributing it.
If they cut BBC America I mite actually loose my mind. Also, there relationship with PBS better stay in tact. If I don't get my Masterpiece Theater and other such stuff I'm going on strike.
Thank you for being awesome and making a valid point and being rational while I casually flip out.
Living in Canada, I don't know much about the BBC but I know you guys are lucky to have so much original content. In Toronto we get a lot of backwash from the US, I think I can only name three or four shows that are actually Canadian.
It's good that they're trying to up the quality of their content (not sure they need to do cuts to do it) but it's always a question of what those changes are going to be. Any information on that yet?
There isn't much that I know about the BBC not living in Britain, but I am a fan of their news coverage, and Dr. Who. I hope that they continue to do those things and to do them as greatly as they have in the past.
I hope this isn't premature, but I'm starting to think that we might be at the stage where the ideals that are behind the BBC are probably a bit outdated now. I was not up in arms about the salaries of Jonathan Ross or Mark Thompson or anything of that nature, but as an internet user it's very easy to find things to cater for my interests. Perhaps there are others who struggle more than I do and I'm being selfish, but I don't see why we need to have a 'public broadcaster'.
I still believe very strongly in the BBC. I am quite a nostalgic though. But the BBC being our voice across the world should never change. It is the benchmark for world class journalism.
There was a good interview between Paxman and Mark Thompson, BBC General Director in which Paxman rips him to shreds on this issue. He states that BBC4 is clearly terrible and the BBC needs to sort its priorities. Sorry I couldn't find the link. Sure you'l be able to though :D
Only the BBC World Service is paid for by the taxpayer. The BBC is funded by the licencepayer and by sales of its productions (ie it earns its own crust). The cuts you describe seem more like a realignment than a retrenchment.
I suppose BBC are thinking that we have an aging population so the teens and other minorities arn't as important to focus on...but we are the future!!! and when I say "we" I mean you...cuz I dont pay for BBC...I get bbc canada and watch the rest online :)
since i don't live in the uk, this won't affect me unless something happens to doctor who. i'm assuming that they at least have the sense to keep that running.
This is what happens when old guys are running the BBC. They have no understanding of the technology of the future. The comment about channel 4 doing a better job with BBC Switch and Blast is silly! I've done some stuff with BBC Blast and it was great, helping give young ones skills for the future and now they are just going to throw it all away!!
HOLD ON!!!! So the bbc earn all that money from the taxpayer a year, they own 50% of UKTV, they have tv and radio stations up the ass, not to mention they only have 30,000 employees (roughly), and they wanna make cuts?
for some reason my "first" comment is viewed several times.
well it doesn't matter, i guess, if you get more comments this way because i really like the content of your videos. it's really good to see youtubers not making videos about current celebrities but about something that really matters. so thank you :)
Personally, I love Switch and 6Music but, in the long run, won't that mean better content for the other services? After all, they'll have more money to put into other, bigger projects rather than spending it on programmes that only a few people would tune into.
Also, I think their assuming that other networks will pick up the audiences they'll lose (which they undoubtedly will) is stupid, to be blunt. Like you said, what exactly is meant to happen if they're not interested? What happens then?
Who matches TV anymore anyway? :) As long as they keep iPlayer going I don't give a crap what else they do. But It's good to see they're cutting off the least used programs and using that 'wasted cash' to bring out better shows for the masses.
I was pretty pissed when Russell Brand was forced to resign. The whole issue blew up in the media a whole week after the show went out, thats when the complaints starting coming in . First time I experienced the control the media has over the population.
If you own a TV you have to pay for a TV license. When they cut BBC Switch and Blast the audeince will go to watch things on channel 4... they are paying by watching adverts and their TV license.. Paying twice?
I kind of like BBC Switch. And I also like the fact that they put up their shows online. It's really convenient. Bleh, oh well. The people never win in these sorts of situations. :p
I'm really annoyed that the BBC is deciding to do this. I find BBC Switch really interesting and helpful, especially with The Surgery progamme on Sunday evenings (Radio 1) because it's helps so many people my age. Even if C4 was in charge of teen broadcasting, I honestly don't think it would reach as many people as the BBC has. It'd be a a real shame if the BBC decides to go ahead with this.
In 21st century there are a lot more ways to spend the past time and BBC will never going to get as much radio audience as before since the invention of iPod then music streaming online and youtube.
The next thing they should do is reform the ancient TV License system. When the country is in debt so much. STOP SPENDING!
Okay, people forget that the BBC is a business and like all business they have to save money. But personally i think they should look at the rating of the stations and also consider the effect that cutting a certain station is going to make. Then Decide about the cuts
ITV can chong a fat one and 6 Music is simply the best radio out there, and why not put that on FM, it would get so many more listeners that way its unbelievable.
Yes, channel four has some great programmes for teens, like skins, glee and 90210, but it doesn't provide the service for teenagers like switch and blast currently do.
switch and blast websites have so much info; advice pages, music info, interviews, how to get into industries, work experience with bbc blast.
t4 is rubbish compared to bbc switch and blast, and needs to sharpen up it's act quickly if the bbc scraps switch and blast.
Good point. Stuff like The Surgery and comment programmes that get young people involved rather than just passive viewers only really happen on the BBC teen projects. I think the closest thing T4 has to community support of T4 on the beach!
When switching through the radio stations, I heard "it doesn't matter if you're black or white" by MJ playing on there, funny coming from a station whose motto is "Love black music, love 1Xtra".
Well, I don't think it's the end of the BBC. I like the idea of more original content. There's so much rubbish aired, that it can only be a good thing.
Let's hope that it doesn't get bought by a foreign company, lol.
Why should this organisation be any different to any other group struggling through the recession?
There's far to many levels of managment, to much concentration on diversity & pushing the agendas of minority groups & far to much money lost to external contractors & advisers.
The BBC is doing exactly what the wider public sector is about to do after struggling through a recession on the back of serious mismanagment and that's make cuts to justify it's position.
I agree with you that cuts are good, but the BBC should not be run like other media providers, that's not what it's there for, it's not around to make money, it is there to provide services to the masses and the minorities. Sky would never be able to justify opening an Asian community based radio show, because they wouldn't make money. It is here where the BBC has its most important role.
The BBC has so many radio stations and channels. The Asian network, switch and Radio 6 were a bit too much for the BBC to handle, Its obvious they would have to make cuts, just be thankful their not cutting anything major or the iplayer which I love. They have even promised to improve the quality/quantity of the programmes so I don't see how you can complain, your licence fee doesn't go as far as many people expect it to.
"Huh. As an ignorant American I actually never realized that BBC was government owned/operated. That seems really bizarre to me. I thought it was just like our ABC or something."
As far as I know, the BBC isn't owned or operated by the government. Although to watch it, you need to pay the BBC (the government decide on the fee). Lack of advertisements FTW!
I think that it's an unwise idea to cut out stuff from the service. I enjoy it all and many other do, too.
Yeah I can't see 6 music going after this. They have a standard 12 week (I think) period after they announce things like this to go over plans and gauge reaction... The reaction is pretty clear!
And as for the other thing... Please never talk to me again.
I'm happy to hear the BBC are going to make more effort to use the taxpayers money to provide new programmes, though I feel its a shame they decided that the asian network and 6music need to go in order to do this.
I dont think they should care if they have the monopoly over uk tv bbc would always be the best provider regardless of the cuts all the competitors still lose out to the bbc in the end. I really hope bbc 3 doesnt get cut as a result of this.
Huh. As an ignorant American I actually never realized that BBC was government owned/operated. That seems really bizarre to me. I thought it was just like our ABC or something.
AXE the BBC. It was great in the 50s-80s, but today it is a diseased carcass that many eschew. Axe it-------NOW!

AFXE 2 years ago
"extremely valuable national treasure"
In your opinion, why should everyone in the UK have to pay for the BBC that "has its biases"? Your from the United States so your not forced to pay... The BBC was set up to be impartial and is far from it, therefore it has blown its remit and should be scrapped.
WinstonSmith46 2 years ago
I'm from Australia, moved to London several months ago but I've been a fan of the BBC since I was a child when my English mum sat me and my four sisters in front of British telly shows (trying to indoctrinate us I think).
Over the years I came to respect different aspects of the BBC i.e. their journalism, radio content and of course their version of Pride and Prejudice. I think it's unfortunate that they are cutting back, especially in Asia but other than that my opinions are pretty apathetic.
mybrainisuseful 2 years ago
Tax does not pay for the BBC! The license fee does. License fee payers.
Channel 4 also has a remit set for it & I'm sure they must feel indebted to the BBC for giving part of the license fee to them to help with the digital switchover (another question is Channel 4 not over stretching itself, as it obviously makes no money) so I'm sure they'll pick up these teenage audiences, as they've always had the younger adult in mind.

Cuts are good & bad. Good that they're being more responsible. Bad that they're cutting jobs (wish they'd give me one!.. a job that is!)
peesemould 2 years ago
"Tax does not pay for the BBC! The license fee does."
The Licence Fee is a tax. The £139.50 forced payment for having a TV is a tax.
WinstonSmith46 2 years ago
Technically, sure. But saying "taxpayers" would really mean people who pay income tax/NI/whatever and is an inflammatory phrase. License fee payers refers to people who own TVs and people who pay tax and people who pay license fees are mutually exclusive.

The British Brainwashing Corporation is ,along with the rest of the mainstream media, propaganda. You will never find the bigger picture on such outlets. Research the new world order.

I watch/listen to the BBC yet I'm forced by Law to subscribe to it......the BBC is a leech on the British people..let it fund itself
RifledBarrel 2 years ago 5
@RifledBarrel if the BBC had to fund itself, it would start advertising. the only reson that the BBC doen't use advertising is that we, as TV lisence payers, pay for it, and the only reason that we, as TV lisence payeers pay for TV id that the BBC does not advertise. thats sort of the point.

Well it is a lovely sight to see your face again!
I think there are plenty of things they could cut down on without getting rid of niche radio shows! Generally they do a good job though!
itiselizabeth 2 years ago

WinstonSmith46 2 years ago
I dont like anything on the BBC or on TV other than Simon Cowell's shows which I get to watch for free on youtube.
I dont own a TV or pay for a TV license, my parents dont watch it either, they watch sky, but need to pay for BBC to get sky. As with The Asian Network, no one in my (asian) family watches or listens to that, they prefer to watch Asian channels on Sky.
bhavvv 2 years ago 3
So in essence your family is paying £139.50 a year to subsidise someone else's choice of entertainment. Same here I don't watch the BBC but still have to pay this bonkers extortion racket or get threatened with a court appearance and a fine.
WinstonSmith46 2 years ago
I agree that they should find a fairer way to fund it.
rhymingwithoranges 2 years ago
Absolutely! Its nothing more than state enforced propaganda!
boogaloo80 2 years ago
I wouldn't go that far. The BBC is upheld worldwide as some of the most impartial and fair journalism in the world.
rhymingwithoranges 2 years ago

Not being a British taxpayer, I don't fully understand how much they spend on the BBC, however, with all the job-cuts and loss of original content I cannot see why the savings is worth it.
spannalina 2 years ago
They plan to invest the money they save back into original content, so that their own production goes up. So they aren't technically making cuts (my bad for saying that) in terms of money spend, but just redistributing it.
rhymingwithoranges 2 years ago

CBC faced tones of cut backs (800 jobs and a lot of funding) last year.
They did it pretty evenly though, among cultural groups... things that are covered by other networks and such.
It sucks majorly still because the CBC constantly needs more funding to compete with other networks.
Anyways, the fact that they did it to smaller audiences worries me. Minorities need a voice, and I don't feel another program will do it for them.
Also: The Mighty Boosh... favourite show atm.

Mrsir2 2 years ago 2
Who matches TV anymore anyway? :) As long as they keep iPlayer going I don't give a crap what else they do. But It's good to see they're cutting off the least used programs and using that 'wasted cash' to bring out better shows for the masses.
I was pretty pissed when Russell Brand was forced to resign. The whole issue blew up in the media a whole week after the show went out, thats when the complaints starting coming in . First time I experienced the control the media has over the population.

It'd be a a real shame if the BBC decides to go ahead with this.
jellybeangravy 2 years ago
I agree with you on the services provided by switch, hopefully T4 will be able to carry on the batton
rhymingwithoranges 2 years ago
I say these cut are welcoming changes.
In 21st century there are a lot more ways to spend the past time and BBC will never going to get as much radio audience as before since the invention of iPod then music streaming online and youtube.
The next thing they should do is reform the ancient TV License system. When the country is in debt so much. STOP SPENDING!
ConfusedMartin 2 years ago
Okay, people forget that the BBC is a business and like all business they have to save money. But personally i think they should look at the rating of the stations and also consider the effect that cutting a certain station is going to make. Then Decide about the cuts

ITV can chong a fat one and 6 Music is simply the best radio out there, and why not put that on FM, it would get so many more listeners that way its unbelievable.

It's such a bad idea to scrap switch and blast =/
Yes, channel four has some great programmes for teens, like skins, glee and 90210, but it doesn't provide the service for teenagers like switch and blast currently do.
switch and blast websites have so much info; advice pages, music info, interviews, how to get into industries, work experience with bbc blast.
t4 is rubbish compared to bbc switch and blast, and needs to sharpen up it's act quickly if the bbc scraps switch and blast.
TheGullsFan 2 years ago
Good point. Stuff like The Surgery and comment programmes that get young people involved rather than just passive viewers only really happen on the BBC teen projects. I think the closest thing T4 has to community support of T4 on the beach!

Why should this organisation be any different to any other group struggling through the recession?
There's far to many levels of managment, to much concentration on diversity & pushing the agendas of minority groups & far to much money lost to external contractors & advisers.
The BBC is doing exactly what the wider public sector is about to do after struggling through a recession on the back of serious mismanagment and that's make cuts to justify it's position.
ianh321 2 years ago
I agree with you that cuts are good, but the BBC should not be run like other media providers, that's not what it's there for, it's not around to make money, it is there to provide services to the masses and the minorities. Sky would never be able to justify opening an Asian community based radio show, because they wouldn't make money. It is here where the BBC has its most important role.
