I love how the music portrays the greatest of what transpired with "The Fab Five." They all do a great job letting us into the great brotherhood they shared and the memories of their pasts. Jalen Rose says is best @3:45. He sums up this team's legacy and the importance of what they did for the game of college basketball and more importantly for themselves. This documentary would be along side "Unguarded about Chris Herron as the my two favorite documentaries I've ever seen.
Man, I almost shared a tear when Juwan said LeBron, DWade and Bosh don't say he's Juwan Howard from the Miami Heat, but that he's Juwan Howard from Michigan's Fab Five. That's true respect coming from today's generation and it shows the Fab Five legacy will forever be intact :)
@samtheman7975 I'm sure you probably had to look the North Carolina lineup up. I believe Jalen was obviously trying to say that right off the top of your head, who won the title 3 and 5 years ago. Someone couldn't instantly get it right away without thinking a little while. You say "Fab Five" and I can name name at least 3 of them instantly. BTW I've never heard of any of those guys on the UNC team that year. Jalen's most important point, "The Fab Five" changed college basketball history.
@teambayern In a sense, yes I do believe it was for the better. For the players on that team, this was something special. It's unfortunate that they had to give up the banners, but we all know they won those games. I don't think you can take the banners away from them. It's not like they were illegal recruiting or something. Jalen said it perfectly. This team will remembered for revolutionizing the game of college basketball. Five freshman was unheard of before that time.
@samtheman7975 He was saying that off the top of his head. He didnt need to go to Wikipedia like you. Everyone knows that he was talking about North Carolina.
@Killer0fTheSun not one of the best its defiantly THE BEST there will never be a team like this and will never start 5 freshman and succeed MICH FAN 4 LIFE!!
Best documentary.....but what's sucks jimmy king was in stands.....today @ Michigan game 1.17.12 vs msu...espn ....didnt acknowledge he was there....he made history @ Michigan....I love Michigan... But not koo......go blue
This is the best damn sports documentary ever made, not even close...They were a hurricane and they did change everything into what we see today in the game...once the bans r lifted, Michigan should re-hang those banners, create a banner deicated to the Fab 5, or make some sort of enshrinement for these players...greatest NCAA team to never win the title, a damn shame, but Jalen's right..20 yrs later, who r talking bout...the Fab 5!!!! the song that plays wit the montage embodies the Fab5
This might be the best sports documentary I've ever seen. As a Kentucky fan who used to live in Detroit every summer growing up, it holds personal fascination for me. Always hated the Fab Five because I thought UK wins Final Four if Mashburn doesn't foul out, but now I respect them. Will never believe the Fab Five could legitimately lose to that atrocious UNC squad. So much more to the story. A truly superb documentary on a complex team.
It was so disappointing to see MI lose the title after a season of dominance. The only thing worse was seeing the Celtics lose to the Lakers in 2010. The losing side measures a champions worth.
@ynanglo3 Exactly. Do you see them making documentaries about any National Champions of the past 10 years? There was something special about this team. They didn't win the titlle, but they changed the face of college basketball.
That team was a devinely inspired ! A charismatic left hand 6-8 point guard , 6-4 high flying shooting guard with a soft touch, a 6-6 wing with major hops and great defensive and hustle, a 6-10 Power forward consider the national top player since soph in High school and JUWAN a 6-10 technician on the "block".
@Heelincal12 Donald Williams, one of the purest shooters I have ever seen. Had him as a coach at UNCC as a kid and he was shooting jumpers 5 feet in from 1/2 court. Sinking them like it was nothing. As soon as he made that comment, I named all five UNC players.
@digitalsurface Yes, you may know all five UNC player lineup, but who to this very day is still mesmerized, and talked about? The FAB FIVE! The UNC players back then do not even collaberate with one another now! Fab five still keeps in touch. HA
@BADBOYTIDE93 , Actually, I enjoyed watching them play. They were exciting for sure, but the fact remains that they were outplayed in the championship game by a very good UNC team. One of the most mesmerizing teams in college history was Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers Loyola team in the 90s. Check them out and you will see a team distroy their opponents! Watch that ESPN film.
I'm a huge Miami sports fan but I got a lot of love for the Michigan Fab Five. I'm glad that Juwan Howard is playing 15 minutes away at the triple A and hope that he gets his ring this upcoming year. He deserves it. If he wins, I think the Fab Five finally get their championship.
There will never again be a "Fab Five". These young, talented African-American boys who are now men, will forever be a legacy! Even though they didnt win a national title, their drive, and their ambition to become champions will always be remembered!! They will always be champions in my heart! God bless all five of them! Forever Fab Five!! Nuff said!
The NCAA and Universities need to take a real hard look at themselves ... its so easy to ban players, to take down banners .... funny how none of the financial gain received from said players is never similarly deemed tainted, returned, given to charities ... etc ... Fab 5 forever, Go Blue, those jerseys need to be retired .. Jalen Rose is a God Send
I'm a Minnesotan and a Gophers fan. But it truly pains me that the Flyin' Illini and the Fab Five never won the titles they could have. Stories like this team are why real fans follow sports.
Jerry Tarkanian. Steve Fischer. Two of the best college coaches for reasons only true believers will know. Go RUNNIN' REBELS. Go FAB 5. OG's teach the youngstas about this movement we may never see again. One love everybody !!
I'm from the Carolina's so naturally I had to root for the Tarheels in 93 but man I felt bad for those guys, two years in a row at such a young age & as good as that team was.
Fab 5 redefined the sport itself, both with their style of play and fashion statement. And the people in charge take away their accomplishments! Well, too bad no one can take away their legacy! In NCAA's records there may never be a fab 5, but in an average fan's heart they'll live forever!
@AZ520ful It's bullshit, but they can't. The ncaa took down their final four banners and michigan can't retire any numbers from that era. According to the ncaa, the "fab five" never existed
Bryan Burwell is right about one thing that Michigan used the fab five to get money but what did they get in return nothing while michigan makes millions. Chris doesn't need to apologize.
@SoWhatIfYourGay, I agree. Those boys earned it with hard work! It is so wrong that the NCAA yanked those banners from UM and forced them to vacate all...ahem, games. Dear NCAA- Just because you say so, doesn't make it so! Get a reality check, NCAA!
goes to show that all they could say about the NCAA penalties is that they were upset over the banners getting lifted..these boys cared about winning.
this documentary shows u what wrong with college athletics. schools take advantage of these kids athletic ability and making millions and the kids making none.
I'm an OSU alum, raised to hate michigan...but I'll be damned, this is the best documentary I've ever seen. These guys were awesome, Jalen Rose's honesty and cander in this film was incredible and definately drove this film.
Man, this brings me to tears. If anyone is at fault, it's the NCAA. Punish the athlete, not the team. It should be a team sport on the court, not off, if you get what I'm saying
I was 15 years old whn they came out...I grew-up in Greece, while bball was becoming THE sport, but for some reason no-one knew anything about NCAA, people thought that it existed in order for kids to have a place to go before NBA...Whn they hit the scene they WERE ncaa, the only non-proffesional team of any sport to become world-wide famous...if not the best team in history, certainly the MOST IMPORTANT TEAM IN BBALL HISTORY...only after them ppl started noticing Pip/ Kukoc/Harper for CHI
whoever is against young men celebrating accomplishments and the fruits of their hard work and camaraderie i seriously question your values. sure people got offended, but thats jsut cause they're too uptight.
In the end, the only sad thing is that none of them one a championship at the collegiate or pro level. They were great athletes that had a lasting impact on the game of basketball. They're famous, and rightfully so.
None of them were busts. Webber was good, and Juwan Howard has played for over 17 years. It's VERY hard to compete at the professional level, and for Juwan to have played so long is a testament of how hard work and leadership pays off, no matter your age. The man loves basketball.
I did cry, the music, that last quote, and having 5 friends I grew up with from middle til now, 26 years old with two kids, we dont always keep intouch, but I love those guys like brothers forever.
...2:12 and on is perfectly made...the music...the interviews....the pics....the clips...and the montage starting at 4:58 with Jalen Rose' words closing it out is just perfect!!!
@manganzon23 The difference between the U and the fab5 is that the Canes were reflective of their leadership. The fab5 was reflective of no leadership at all. The players on those Miami teams not only respected Howard, Jimmy and Ericson but they respected their fellow upperclassmen regardless of whether they were black or white. Yeah the U was a bunch of badasses but they respected the right people at the right time and WON! The fab5 had no respect for anyone let alone their own teammates.
@WatchVenusSpa Man Im not trying to pick on you but I just totally disagree. I think you just dont like them but your comments arent correct on them. The only difference between The U and Fab 5 was championships and as a matter of fact more U players go arrested then any of the Fab 5( know there's more players on a football team) they still talk to & support their coach Steve Fisher. They were and still cool with Eric Riley and Pelinka(who's a agent now) they were the upper classmen.
This documentary and the SMU documentary are among the greatest documentaries I have ever seen. This 30 for 30 series is absolutely remarkable in my opinion.
@slove8181973 If have gotten the name of the song yet its This will Destroy you by Quiet its at the bottom right just in case you have nt recevied the information yet ! Enjoy
@WatchvenusSpa great people and still have good money from playing. There's so many guys I played against in college and AAU who were talented but didnt even sniff the NBA. You have no clue how good you have to be to make it on that level. I respect every guy who even made it for a year. Its not failure everyone cant be a star. For your info I played for a small D1 school coached two years at a small college and been coaching AAU ball for years so Ive been around the game for years.
@WatchVenusSpa Wilkens, to name a few. You comment on the others being a bust. First I know you read my comment about they all have a DEGREE. Now just making it to the NBA is a great success. Less then 5% of ball players make it to the NBA. Think of the best players ever from your hometown unless your from a major city I bet most of them didnt make it to the NBA. The few guys from my town that made it to the NBA were great in high school and good in college but had mediocre NBA careers but are
@WatchVenusSpa I might be wrong but i feel you really dont have a basketball background. Webber is a guranteed Hall of Famer I dont know what you're talking about his career starting off bad he was Rookie of the Year avg 20pts and 12rebs. He's one of only five guys to have career avg 20pts/9rebs/4ast. He was a first team all NBA a few years in Sac and there have been a lot of HOFers that never won a MVP and/or Championship. Dave Bing,Alex English,Calvin Murphy, Stockton, Drazen Petrovic,Dominque
At 4:57 I Get Goosebumps Everytime!! If you have ever played any kind of an organized sport and were good at it, the montage from 4:57 - 6:11 will make you remember every good time you ever had playing sports growing up.
If you dont know they all got there college degree and are success black men not back in the hood broke in a Real Crack House remininsing on there glory days. I was a UNC fan rooting against them in the championship but really enjoyed the Fab Five. I want to think them for getting my high school to buy long shorts and the Nikes they wore. lol
@WatchVenusSpa Webbers career took off when he went to Sacramento they were a Robert Horry last second 3 from beating the Lakers and a horrible game 7 from Stojackovic. The ape comment was racist they just listened to rap and when you and rappers come from some of the same culture you're going to dress similar doesnt mean they're thugs. No different then a country music fan wearing cowboy hats and boots like there singers. Theres nothing wrong with that either we are all different.
@WatchVenusSpa I try not to get into commenting on the internet becaue its so full of haters like yourself. First of all to make it and last in the NBA is a great accomplishment. For Juan Howard to do that is impressive everyone dosnt become a star and just a few years of playing they make more than the above average middle class work would in a lifetime. Webber is one of only a few players to average over 20pts and 10rebs for a career so he most likely will be a Hall of Famer.
@D1playboy I never really hated on Webber. He straightened himself out after a horrible start to his NBA career and his epic collapse in college. That said, he won't get into the HOF because he never won anything, (no individual awards, no championships, no NCAA Title.) Plus the smell of the scandals at Michigan will hurt him.
Webber was the ONLY one that wasn't an EPIC fail in the NBA. (You don't talk shit like they did and not deliver or you ARE a BUST.)
@johndoh1990 would've love to have been a fly on the wall in hotel rooms, locker rooms, buses, and airplanes as these guys cut through their competitors like a hot knife through butter. Truly remarkable documentary that shows the tragedy of unrealized expectations.
@tanio12 Yawn, they set a FASHION trend. They were the Lady Gaga of their time, really something worth being proud of when you are a team loaded with the most epic 8 figure BUSTS in NBA history...
huh? what are you talking about? jalen.,juwan and chris are far from a bust . At least they played in the NBA and are doing quite well for themselves one can't be angry about that, though it seems some are.
people are being smart asses and naming the starting 5 for north carolina and shit...obviously you look the shit up...his point was that even though they lost nobody remebers the teams who beat them...their legacy will never be forgotten because of the way they played...i cant even name the champions from 20002 but i will always remember the fab 5

Man, this brings me to tears. If anyone is at fault, it's the NCAA. Punish the athlete, not the team. It should be a team sport on the court, not off, if you get what I'm saying
MgoMuse 7 months ago
I was 15 years old whn they came out...I grew-up in Greece, while bball was becoming THE sport, but for some reason no-one knew anything about NCAA, people thought that it existed in order for kids to have a place to go before NBA...Whn they hit the scene they WERE ncaa, the only non-proffesional team of any sport to become world-wide famous...if not the best team in history, certainly the MOST IMPORTANT TEAM IN BBALL HISTORY...only after them ppl started noticing Pip/ Kukoc/Harper for CHI

This documentary is similar to The U, but only .25 the attitude and no championships.
manganzon23 8 months ago
@manganzon23 The difference between the U and the fab5 is that the Canes were reflective of their leadership. The fab5 was reflective of no leadership at all. The players on those Miami teams not only respected Howard, Jimmy and Ericson but they respected their fellow upperclassmen regardless of whether they were black or white. Yeah the U was a bunch of badasses but they respected the right people at the right time and WON! The fab5 had no respect for anyone let alone their own teammates.

@manganzon23 You need to look back and read all my comments. Just trying to open minds and this is coming from a guy with a basketball background.
D1playboy 8 months ago

D1playboy 9 months ago
@WatchVenusSpa Wilkens, to name a few. You comment on the others being a bust. First I know you read my comment about they all have a DEGREE. Now just making it to the NBA is a great success. Less then 5% of ball players make it to the NBA. Think of the best players ever from your hometown unless your from a major city I bet most of them didnt make it to the NBA. The few guys from my town that made it to the NBA were great in high school and good in college but had mediocre NBA careers but are
D1playboy 9 months ago
@WatchVenusSpa I might be wrong but i feel you really dont have a basketball background. Webber is a guranteed Hall of Famer I dont know what you're talking about his career starting off bad he was Rookie of the Year avg 20pts and 12rebs. He's one of only five guys to have career avg 20pts/9rebs/4ast. He was a first team all NBA a few years in Sac and there have been a lot of HOFers that never won a MVP and/or Championship. Dave Bing,Alex English,Calvin Murphy, Stockton, Drazen Petrovic,Dominque

I was a UNC fan rooting against them in the championship but really enjoyed the Fab Five. I want to think them for getting my high school to buy long shorts and the Nikes they wore. lol
D1playboy 9 months ago 2
@WatchVenusSpa Webbers career took off when he went to Sacramento they were a Robert Horry last second 3 from beating the Lakers and a horrible game 7 from Stojackovic. The ape comment was racist they just listened to rap and when you and rappers come from some of the same culture you're going to dress similar doesnt mean they're thugs. No different then a country music fan wearing cowboy hats and boots like there singers. Theres nothing wrong with that either we are all different.
D1playboy 9 months ago 2
@WatchVenusSpa I try not to get into commenting on the internet becaue its so full of haters like yourself. First of all to make it and last in the NBA is a great accomplishment. For Juan Howard to do that is impressive everyone dosnt become a star and just a few years of playing they make more than the above average middle class work would in a lifetime. Webber is one of only a few players to average over 20pts and 10rebs for a career so he most likely will be a Hall of Famer.
D1playboy 9 months ago
@D1playboy I never really hated on Webber. He straightened himself out after a horrible start to his NBA career and his epic collapse in college. That said, he won't get into the HOF because he never won anything, (no individual awards, no championships, no NCAA Title.) Plus the smell of the scandals at Michigan will hurt him.
Webber was the ONLY one that wasn't an EPIC fail in the NBA. (You don't talk shit like they did and not deliver or you ARE a BUST.)
