Okay, I have a theory. Sardo always pulls out some wacky item and then seems to make up its' magical function on the spot. He's always surprised when the kids come back and tell him it actually works. My theory is that, unbeknownst to himself, he IS magical, not the items, but he can imbue the cruddy trinkets he peddles with his own naive-idiot-savant magic.
