What can I add to what the world has already been said? Nobu has been kissed by God. This is nearly beyond belief. He is my new inspiration for life, for living, for being.
great piece, trying to learn it myself. Takes a lot of practice, especially the right hand to get the right voice, evenness, and main melodic tune on the pinky
i've been playing for almost 10 years now, and i can't even begin to compare myself to his level of skill. absolutely fantastic! the amount of emotion and control he exhibits are extraordinary. May he continue to play as beautifully as he has now :)
Wow..I tried to learn this..left hand was a piece of cake. Then I tried the right hand....it made me want to give up immediately. It takes an immense amount of finger control to shift back between the thumb+pinky and the index+ring finger.
Man..anyone have any advice to help me for the right hand?
Oops, I guess I kinda overexaggerated the difficulty. After I tried varying the fingerings for each chord-trill thing, things were a little more smoother.
I was not familiar with these pieces prior to seeing this video. I enjoyed them very much. He seems to have a flair for jazz; I would be interested in hearing him play more jazz or his own compositions in the future.
I've heard the studio recording by Marc-Andre Hamelin, and hearing Tsujii play is all the more shocking since he matches the supervirtuoso measure for measure. Hope we see more from this young man.
@demosj Actually i like this performance a bit more than hamelin from an interpretation standpoint. Tsujii plays more clean, more "secco", which i think is more loyal to Kapustin's own approach, whereas i think Hamelin is too "romanticised". Just my opinion though, takes nothing away from the fact that Hamelin is a super virtuoso also
Supervirtuoso is a necessary term to distinguish the likes of Horowitz, Wild, Argerich, and Kissin from great, but not AS great, pianists like Brailowsky, Kentner, and de Pachmann.
I am so happy to listen to Tsujii !!! He is fantastic. I wonder if the critics that wrote bullshits about him after the Van Cliburn 2009 are listening him playin Kasputin at 15 yold. !!! GO TSUJII !!!!!!!!
@LukeMD Critics who write for papers or blogs aren't piano virtuosos. The audiences know better. This piece made me an admirer of Kapustin - I am already sold on Nobuyuki, in a big way.
Tsujii plays this etude better than Kapustin himself.
He plays it with such romantisicsm, charming, and adequated phrasing, that makes this unique; mystic and beautiful sounds comming out from the instrument, without forgetting the esence of an etude.
About Tsujii's touch I agree with you: The sound he creates in this piece reminds me of those by George Shearing - these unbelievably beautiful and sensitive tones I admire so much, where do they come from?

nooo...keep in mind that Kapustin's recording dates back to 1986 and couldn't possibly generate that tone with the equipment provided to him. even currently, Kapustin continues to record on a "dated" instrument--to put it mildly. Tsuji's recording IS superior to that of kapustin's own. however, to say Tsuji is BETTER would warrant some reprehensible implications regarding Kapustin's mastery of the instrument.
@tdavis2797 Indeed, kapustin is the real genious. It is Kapustin that have created new music out of his genious brain while Tsuji is - in a good matter anyway - 'merely' copying the scraps of a real genious. Not forgetting the fact that Tsuji still is a phenonemal pianist. But to say Tsuji is better than Kapustin would in a way be like saying Arthur Rubinstein is better than Chopin or Liszt or that Gould is more genial than Mozart or Beethoven
A much belated and heart-felt thank you for posting this video. You and others who uploaded these videos of Nobuyuki's performances have done more than anyone else to vindicate mean-spirited things said about Tsujii from people who resent his Cliburn gold medal.

@demosj I always thought virtuoso was the maximum standard a human can achieve, I dont see a point of coining supervirtuoso...

Sort of an A and B list, pardon the crude simile.
