I'm so sorry about your bad experiences, but I believe you didn't have a Chinese who guided you in your travel. If you want to spend 5 dollars to get a good meal in Chinese resturant, I will tell you that it's impossible. Typically, a good resturant in Shanghai will cost you more than 15 dollars. Believe or not, some expensive ones might cost hundreds of dollars per person, and you can find candy and chocolate in the supermarkets. Candies are bad for you health, and vegetables are good.

I took a 13 hour flight from Hong Kong to LAX and there was an Old Chinese woman sitting next to me, literally 80 years old, and she was trying to figure out her TV and started hitting the seat in front of her...LOL P.S. I lost 25lbs while I was in china, I stopped eating rice about 3 weeks in, and ate breakfast bars for the last 3 weeks
hahaha... and those creepy toilets! i remembered having too much sushi one day when i came accross one of these things, i was totally clueless when i saw it! i didn't even know where to face! i ended up taking a dump in the disabled toilet where they have the usual, familiar throne... whew

Oh, I definitely know what you mean when you say that you felt at home in a large city. When I visited China, I got used to it pretty quickly. By the way, you probably didn't explore enough.. My friend and I went to a mall in Beijing, and they had TONS of awesome candy. There was like, a WHOLE WALL dedicated to candy.

Nee hao(你好）from China！We of course have sweets and candy including chocolate, if you don't believe just go back to China and I'll give you some for free. We use the toilet for squatting because we know Chinese Kongfu. Only elder ppl in China are superstitious.

Don't tell my room mate's boyfriend you eat less with chopsticks. He's half-Korean and shovels food in his mouth with chopsticks like there's no tomorrow. XD It's funny to watch.
And KFC and McDonalds? 0.o Their native cuisine is WAY healthier. From what I've had, Sweidish food has about as much flavor as food in New England. >P Give me southern barbeque or spanish food any day.

they (we) do have desserts, you just need to know where to find them. we even have candy art, which is basically using colored malt candy to sculpt. it is really pretty.

-candy and deserts and chocolate? how many fat chinese people have you seen? and they do have sweets and candy, you just have to look in the right place.
-When you were at KFC, the customer asked "Is this chicken wing." The cashier answered (i think) "Chicken breast and ______"
-The squatters are actually more sanitary than toilets. Your ass doesnt touch anything. Just dont miss =D

-chinese food is always served with rice because the dishes are generall supposed to be more salty. The rice neutralizes the stronger flavor as its generally tasteless. My parents own a chinese restaurant so, thats why rice is such a big part of the diet.
-That part where you were struggling with the chopsticks...its generally acceptable to pickup the bowl and shovel food in your mouth.

I don't suppose you normally sit in public toilet? you normally half-squat right? well, half-squatting while urinating has be shown to cause urinary tract stress.... and the only way to avoid this is to either sit or full squat ....

we call them sesame balls, sweet tofu, red bean paste, etc.!!!
these are our desserts!! I am actually half chinese and half british, so I see both sides of culture very clearly. I guess I understand you are used to more dairy based desserts. The difference is China utilizes much more sesame, soy, and red bean in dessert. We just have different staple crops! Europe tends to use dairy far more! If I ever visit Sweden, show me around k =]

Chinese cuisine is the result of literally thousands of years of continuous refinement, I don't think you can say that about any other cuisine on Earth...I think it's funny that you flew half way around the world to eat at a McDonald's.
