Not only were dreams crushed, but lots of jobs were lost. My middle school's 8th grade science classes would go there for "education purposes" and then have free time. Must have sucked to tell your students that Six Flags closed and that the field trip was canceled.......
@LogoRifle: Very sad situation all around. Although Six Flags sold the park 4 years before it closed, so it wasn't Six Flags that closed the park. Cedar Fair closed it.
One summer my girlfriend and I went here like 4 or 5 times and we always sat on this one bench together at the end of each day talking about how great this park was to us when we were real little.
I went to Geauga Lake and Sea World a lot when I was growing up. I now live in Pennsylvania, but it is sad to see both parks disappear and get replaced with a water park.
I never been to Geauga Lake however I think if they built a B&M hypercoaster (such as Behemoth from Canada's Wonderland) I think that would save them from closing
@bigdon1966 keep in mind that Cedar Fair tried their hand at resurrecting the old time family oriented amusement park(in a marketing capacity at least). Six Flags/Premier parks tried to get competitive with Cedar Point by turning the classic family amusement/water park into a corporate branded park with the large theme park touch. Six Flags' attempt at competition with Cedar Point was unsuccessful. Regardless of owner, Geauga Lake was no match against the grand daddy of them all in Sandusky.
fuck the stuiped ass waterpark (even though this is suposed to be the last year its open i herd it listening to the manager) i want my old rides back i lived there pretty much. i dont think there wasnt one year i didnt get a pass. stuiped ass fucking econemy and cedar fair FUCK YOU!! BRING BACK GEAUGA LAKE
The "Dominator" coaster was originally built when Six Flags owned the park, and was Batman themed hence the black and yellow color scheme. "Steele Venom" originally opened with the name "Mind Eraser" as a backwards rollercoaster. it seemed at the time that it was GL's answer to Cedar Points stand-up coaster, Mantis. "Thunder" Hawk was originally called "Serial Thriller".

No, Cedar Fair was loosing money because there were not a lot of guests to the park. The water park was the most popular area. They wouldn't close it just because it's old . . .
thanks for the memories! LOL Those were the biggest Gold fish ever! i remember going to the KFC by turtle beach and throwing the fish my chicken bones and they would swolow them whole.!
Thanks for the slideshow, jvgsjeff. That was a very poignant memorial.
My daughter and I would go there ten times a year or so. I'll always remember carrying her on my shoulders, walking across the pontoon bridge, as the sun set over the roller coasters.
I think a small piece of my heart will always remain at that place. And as long as we have memories of the wonder and joy we experienced there, Geauga Lake will never really go away . . .
I am truly going to miss Geauga Lake. I grew up at that park, going there every summer with my friends and family. Cedar Fair did a pretty shitty thing to close the park with no notice to anybody who would want to go there one last time. I was fortunate enough to be there on the last day of Okteberfest, which was the last day it was open, and I ended up bringing my camera to take pictures just in case........ I'm glad I did.
BonTonSwan: Basically, they said the attendance was too low. When Cedar Fair first bought the park, they closed the sea life part of the park (the former Sea World Ohio), which was a big draw--there was nothing else like it in this part of the country. And attendance initially dropped as a result, although it did level off and actually slightly increased the final 3 years. Unfortunately, Cedar Fair decided to strip the park of rides rather than re-sell it as an amusement park.
Geauga Lake and Sea World of Ohio were great. I think Cedar Fair wanted to close G.Lake & focus on Cedar Point. They did some self-destructive stuff with G.Lake; School kids got a pass to Six Flags for 6 hours of reading. Cedar Fair took over & wouldn't honor them. After bad press, they agreed, but after a few weeks, they stopped. What a Stupid PR move. If a kid had earned a pass, they would go with paying parents and siblings who would buy over-priced food and games. My family quit going.
Games1219: I make mostly video game videos, but as I wrote on my channel description, I make occasional amusement park videos as well. Although I did use the Wii photo channel for this slideshow...does that help? :)
Head Spin? No, ITS THE MIND ERASER!

@zackvanhalen It was both, actually (at different times). I'll update the description to reflect both names.

@jvgsjeff I know, but it will always be the Mind Eraser to me.

The ugly truth is: Cedar Fair's ONLY reason for buying Geauga Lake from Six Flags was to eliminate Cedar Point's competition!!

Some trivia you may or may not know:
The "Dominator" coaster was originally built when Six Flags owned the park, and was Batman themed hence the black and yellow color scheme. orangeTadpole 2 years ago
orangeTadpole: Actually Steel Venom was originally Superman: Ultimate Escape.
Mind Eraser was the original name of Head Spin, not Steel Venom.
jvgsjeff 2 years ago
My bad. I knew that the coaster with the cobra roll and the loop was Mind Eraser and the red impulse coaster was superman ultimate escape.

Yeah, the food was pretty cheap there. At my local Six Flags, it's 3 dollars for bottled water. I just bring my own food.
