  • they're acryllic, not to mention terrifying in person

  • his hands are proof enough to show all the pussy he is getting. He obviously hasnt been masturbating the last 11 months

  • @Revan1992x

    lol... maybe he's lefthanded :P

  • Ah man I love this guy.

  • I want to learn example 3... but how ??

  • Damn. He needs a dvd or something. Dude can play.

  • dude..you fucking rock! that was awesome. i wish i could play like that!

  • he can kill a pack of wolfs with those nails

  • Is there a reason why he only uses 11 strings?

  • @DrShred47 With the tuning he uses the high g string brakes all the time, and I read that he liked the sound without it.

  • JOHNNY DEPP ALERT!!

  • @AllisonLikesYouu he is seriously an Australian Johnny Depp haha

  • FUCKIN AMAZING!!!!!

  • the diversity of sounds and feelings he can create with one instrument...nothing to do but applaud. And you gotta love his 11-string style (only one G string).

  • haha, transcribe audio in captions!!

  • Fieldy? :D

  • this dude has talons on his right hand

  • @jerukbabi i really like your video great job and what is in the corner of your guitar? is that like a baby in a ball or something

  • the 4th example sounds like 'funky tonight' :D

  • @carvehamwhole2 It is funky tonight, lad xD

  • who did he learn that from? byron bain?

  • @greg8448 he learnt it from a guy named brian in byron bay, austrialia ;)

  • maan! john abuses the fuck out of open C

  • God damn it, it's not a twelve string !!! it's an eleven string guitar, for butlers sake, quit saying he has a twelve string guitar.

  • No fucking way.

I didn't even know you could do that, nevermind making it into a new instrument!

  • because he grows his nails out and probably uses a good nail strengthener.. I just saw JB live the other night! amazing!!!

  • i attached a video response. I was wondering how i can do it the same i do it and incorporate your style by playing with tabs also.. i subscribe to u

  • why are his right hand's nails white?

  • @QuisPiss They're acrylic nails, so he can finger pick easily

  • i cant believe this guy used to skate woolstores

  • what is the thing on his pinkie?

  • @RawrsaidJye A bottleneck

  • @RawrsaidJye A slide?!!

  • @RawrsaidJye I think you can use it like a wammy bar, pretty cool actually.

  • @BabyMorse not at all like a wammy bar, it is used like your fingers, but provides a very different sound

  • @GrungeHippie95 It sounds like a wammy bar, like when you use a wammy bar the pitch continuously changes up and down, the metal thing you slide up and down the neck isn't it and does sorta the same thing?

  • @RawrsaidJye Its called a slide

  • he's plugged in right?

  • @tenniskid004

    no he isnt ;)

  • 11 string guitar G only has 1 string...

  • what people arent realizing, is that its not a 12 string, its an 11 string.

  • @cman0222 He just removed a string.... What's to realize?

  • @tehhhhhd no he didnt. look at the headstock. its a specially designed 11 string. the other wasnt removed.

  • @cman0222 Oh, okay. Why has everyone else told me that he removed one? Maybe he had it removed? Custom made?

  • @tehhhhhd thats what it looks like to me. look custom made. ive tried explaining it to ppl. i mean, if u look at the pegs, it does look like he removed it, but when i look at the headstock, u can see its specially made. oh well i guess lol.

  • @cman0222

he just removed the tuning peg as well...

    probably because it buzzed

  • That is some technique he uses, makes me want to get my 12-string Takamine out, tune it to C6, then start slapping it around a bit,

    He is good, this guy.

  • nails !

  • Great technique-Love it!!!

  • some of the best hammer-ons i've ever seen. He play like he only had a right hand.

  • doesnt it make you wanna go out and start tring to drum on ur guitar???

  • Got it man. Thanks for the inspiration. Check my vids...I give it a shot. Peace and Love

  • omfg

  • SIIICKKK

  • Oh Man...i wanna do this too...this is sooo good!

  • At the end he talks about fusing banjo techniques with the guitar. definitely useful.

  • i got the example 1! yehaaw.

  • tabs?

  • Don't take this the wrong way, but: if you're still using guitar tabs, then you probably won't have much luck learning this piece.

  • accually thats how you learn this song i learned from reading tabs so durrr

  • For a little introduction, search for DaleCampbellAcoustic; he gives some pretty good lessons if you're wanting to learn this style.

  • thanks

  • where is this from?

  • sweeeeet. this was very awesome. so are u just hammering on for pretty much everything in the first example?

  • Tuning C as Black Tears stated. Strings from low to high (6th to 1st)

CGCGCE, , as John is using. But you can the E to E flat to get C minor tuning (flattened third), for new ideas.

But you could use the octaves in any open tuning to do similar in open G or open D etc. (or G and D minor etc)-hope this helps, folks

  • anybody know the tuning?

  • Open C tuning i think

  • I like how he goes from super basic and without warning switches to super complicated

  • Awesome nails dude :)

  • Well, hes great. But there is still just one "drumming" thing he does, example 1 and 2 are the same. And i wouldnt call 3 and 4 drumming. Hes not hitting or knocking on the guitar, hes tapping and "slapping." But, still, really really REALLY cool:D

  • Example 3 is one fine piece of playing.

  • From the song "Pickapart", if you were interested.

  • Ikr ? I kept replaying Example 3 =)

  • john butler!!!!

  • Love those slides around 2:50

  • is he in an open tuning???

  • open c.

    CGCGCe

  • @daltongreen21493 me bottom string(usually e) always sounds waaayyyyy to low wen i use open tunning, any ideas wat im doin wrong, they r all def on the right note but its just the bottom string that doesnt sound ok

  • @buckduck45 make sure you are tuned to the right octave... if you are tuning to CGCGCe ... you shouldnt have to untune the high e...your b string should be tuned up to c also..

make sure you are tuning from your low string down.... so ... you tune lowest pitch string(E) .. to C ... next lowest string (A) down.. to G... and then work your way down...

  • @buckduck45 Get a tuner, see what it says ;)

  • @daltongreen21493

    Thanks

  • @daltongreen21493 Best tuning ever.

  • yes, he usually uses open C tuning.

  • He is an amazing Musician! I love how he has like south Louisianian, Blues, Folk, and Percussion feel. I want to learn how to play, but damn John plays with all five fingers when he strums almost like a Flamenco Player! His guitar has a nice Banjo sound!

  • please ... somebody would put legends in spanish or portuguese?

  • nice job man... really...

  • Busking to fame mean

  • you should change your tags.. you will get more views; this is a cool vid and it deserves more views.

  • if we don't have a guitare with 12 cords how we can learned from you ???

  • its the same for all guitars man

  • lmfao

  • they're called strings by the way, and how many there are of them it doesn't matter, he's teaching guitar drumming, not a tune.

  • Bro, A 12 string and a 6 string are very similar only main difference is number of strings and Sound.

On a 12 string, the strings are so close together that it's almost like your playing a 6 string, but it sounds richer in sound.

  • And the richer sound is caused by the chorus effect! Because the 2strings you got for example the low E are never in the EXACT same tune.

  • yeah, they are an octave apart from each other, I think. I took a couple of music classes, but I'm not an expert.

  • Yeah that's true they are an octave away from each other.

  • My Best friend, who has played music for 11years and was going to be a music teacher, told me that why the !2 string sounds richer and fuller. I am hoping to get an Ibanez EWC30. In acoustics Guitar I notice they are either deep or high sounding. I like the high sounding ones, like the Ibanez. I want to learn how to play. So bad!

  • @Leojx94

umm he is playing 11 string guitar not a 12 string guitar.

  • @88logan he's playing a 12 string guitar, but took one off :-)

  • @Leojx94 only this is an 11 string.

  • @Leojx94 "A 12 string and a 6 string are very similar only mainy difference is the # of string and sound"..... That sounds like a pretty big difference to me.

  • @Leojx94 Did you noticed that John Butler has 11 string?

He removed one string for some reason...

  • @DimyValo on another video, a comment said when he got the guitar, it only had 11 strings and for some reason couldnt fix it so he just learned on 11 strings

  • @zackismez hahahha, that's awesome. Thanks for the info :)

  • @zackismez I was under the impression he removes that string on purpose because it gives it an odd sound - if you leave it on, it is the highest string on the guitar being tuned to a high g, three semitones above the highest e strings. This means the highest note of a chord would be in the middle of the strum. Removing it solves that.

  • @Leojx94 11 string

  • @Leojx94 It's just a little harder to fingerpick :P

  • I think we know why he is chilled out i think we all know he smokes a bit of herbal :P lol. He is just like my uncle oh AND ME

  • is that actually him. Its just too cool that an artist like him would have a video like this helping people out. But i guess thats what makes him so good, that his so chilled out. =}

  • It's paickapart in example 3 no??

  • yes

  • sounds so cool how he uses beats and plays as well wicked

  • how does he the Hi-hat?

  • his nails

  • yeah its probably an open c

  • i think its open c

  • but do u use standard tuning when doin that ??

  • nah man, it's not even a tuning, it's something real weird, when he open strums his guitar ive listened to it and just tuned it that way, but the 12 string guitar also contributes alot to the different sound

    hope that helped ya out

  • its 11 string no double G

  • True... The second G-string simply breaks to easily.

  • say there aint no need to pickapart me cause what you get aint what you see

  • wat's that thing on his little finger?

  • hello again ;) . the thing on his little finger is for the slide guitar style... its called like a slide chrome or something like that... i read that they were originally made out of cut off beer bottle necks.

  • a bottle neck, used to make slides and special sounds on the guitar ;O

  • its a slide, like a bottle slide but you can get like metal ones

  • is this the john butler from toms river,nj?

  • dream theater sucks fat cock

  • whats that black thing over the hole

  • its a pick up

  • das ist einfach noch musik!

ich hoff es gibt bald n neues album! ;-)

  • Like those one band band who play like 10 instruments. Very talented because the rudiment musical theory starts with rhythm

  • I'm guiter lover please teach me. hugs

  • wtf thats so cool i want to learn it can you give me tricks plz

  • Nice drumming lesson, those are actually fake nails, I think their made of silicone or something like that, read on wikipedia I think...

Thought I don't know if their actually fake in this vid, so ...

  • acrilic actualy, most profecional guitarists have them, im not brave enough lol

  • I play guitar since...4month so ...it's so hard for me lol

but, you are very very good!

  • Your nails just give a different tone to finger picks.

  • Blahh Those Nails Are Disgusting!

I Know He Has To Have Them Like That..But Cant You Get Things To Put Over Your Fingers Instead?

  • i dont see why not

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA look how long his nails are

  • im pretty sure those nails are fake. antoine dufour and alot of other guitarists like this wear acrylic nails so that the shape is better for picking

  • They are fake, John Butler uses acrylic nails, real nails break all the time... no matter how careful you are

  • mine don't ;)...the last time I broke one of my nails was like two years and an half ago, and that was because I went to a karate training wihtout my gloves!! And to be honest I'm not even very careful with them!

  • funny that, the only reason would be maybe because my nails are really thin and i do alot of of outdoor stuff and Tae-Kwon-Do

  • Tae-Kwon-Do?

  • his nails are kinda trampy

but its so he can play his guitar easier so meh

  • I think you'll find that the reason he takes the high G string off is not to do with the daddario strings.

I think finds that having the G string a whole 1 1/2 tones higher than the high E string, it tends clash. He wanted to keep his guitar in the natural 2 octave range of a normal guitar. Also in his songs such as 'funky tonight' he just prefers the sound of the natural G string.

  • Your right whenever i play his stuff on a 12 strign it never works because they always have the 2nd G on it

  • talented little men

  • john plays weisenborn lap steels, larivve 6 strings and Maton 12 string guitars

  • that sounds cool...

  • what the merk of that guitar?? i think thats fender? am i right?

  • Its a Maton. They're Australian luthiers.

  • thanks broo...i always use fender 1983 .thanks for ur indfi

  • does any body know what tuning he uses???

  • open c usually

  • cgcgce

  • amazing musician, amazing imagination, amazing inspiration, amazing .......

  • Gorgeous.

  • ahhh, john butler never ceases to amaze me

  • thats sounds so cool

  • why does he take a string off??????

    Some one tell me.

    or else lol

  • on daddario strings the high g-string has a tendancy to break so he justs leaves it off. A lot of artists do especially if you want to play solos with a 12 string.

  • he also says it has a chiming quality that he doesn't want

  • impressive

  • omfg <3

  • all of that sounded so good as well as looked imspressive.

hes such an organic player, no gimmicks or nothing.

  • Is the tune in Example 3 (2:25) from one of his songs? Or is it a tune thats part of his repertoire?

  • Example 3:

    Pickapart - John Butler Trio

  • open C

    1E

    2C

    3G

    4C

    5G

    6C

  • awesome work! so brilliant

  • he's playing in open c tuning (low to high CGCGCE)

  • most of his songs are

  • he is a genius on guitar

  • lol he has a harder time playing slow than fast in the last example :D

Go john butler !! i love his playing

  • do u not here him he gose i was like nd the bad playin he was just learnin thatso he so can play slow

  • ok i was wrong he dosent say i was like im sorry

  • wow amazing !! i love it ! you`re good

  • amazing ; ) god job ; )

  • Thanks 4 uploading he is the man :D
