I love the comments, "could have taken a few fingers." Yes, that is a Uuropean Sparrow Hawk, but a true accipiter, a Kestrel is a falcon. People, the internet is there to educate as well. Bu the looks of it, if it crashed into something, it is probably done, internal or neuro damage. Best left to be eatten by a stronger Spar that didnt crash into a wall, kill that gene line then and there lol
cool man i have seen a few of these birds not as up close as this but , think i seen 1 flying off sith some grass or moss in its beak , think it could be making a nest close to this place , think i might go and have a look i would love to find a nest just to wach these quality birds because there are quite hard to spot compared to buzzards or kestrals there al loads of them around lanarkshire area
It's a sparrowhawk. I've had lots of them in my back due to keeping pigeons. But I wouldn't have gone near it with my bare hands. It could have taken off a few fingers.
I got a better look at the chest for a second its a sparrow hawk. Kestrels are smaller and have more color. Also they like most falcons have a white face with black lines that sometimes resembles a helmet.
only just saw vid mate.the best thing you could of done with this bird or any wild animal would of been to put it somewhere quiet and dark to recover.stress alone can kill a wild bird.you should handle as little as possible(which you did well)don't have any contact with it at all other than to put somewhere quiet and when releasing it.keep any other animals well away so the bird can't see or hear them.this is for future reference. i'm not moaning, you did better than alot of people.nice one
It's a female sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) not a kestrel (falco tinnunculus) note dark colour and a slight showing of white eye brow I hope this helps clear things up
Its a Im. Coopers hawk check for the rounded end of the tail, Its really the only way to tell the sharp-shinned hawk and coopers apart in their first year plumage. (other than size)
It's actually a male Goshawk I believe and probably not much bigger than a large female Sparrowhawk, distinguished by the pale streak above the eye. Very different to kestrel in shape, colour and size. And of course a Kestrel is a falcon not a hawk.
jeez!! the mentality of some people"burn it" "kill the fucker" wtf are u nobs on?? ffs it is a wild animal and that guy was helping it maybe u ignorant ppl should be killed not the b.o.p tards!!
It was a female sparrow hawk mate. They are very good at flying into windows as they case there quarry(prey). It looked like it was stunned so the latter was probidly the case. Good vid, the bird would of recoverd as it was still holding its head up, so it was only dayzed be its blunder.
good job, you sound scottish, it is a Ueropean sparrowhawk, it is similar to our Coopers' hawk in the States. You can id Kestrel as a true falcon, related to Peregrines. This is an "accipiter," related to goshawks.
You couldn't be more wrong. A kestrel and a sparrow hawk are too completly different birds of prey - one being a Falon (Kestrel) and the other being a hawk -the Sparrowhawk. They are different in shape, and colouring although similar in size. (although the femle Sparrowhwak being a third large again). Anyway the bird on the shed is infact a male Goshawk distinguished by the pale streak above the eye and greater in size than a SparrowHawk.
yep defineately a sparrowhawk, quite regularly fly into windows as they chase pigeons or small songbirds in built up areas. You did the right thing there, just keeping it till it recovered, probably still had some concussion or something when it tried to go there.
thats so cool that you had the opportunity to get so close to it! :O

In Europe a sharp shinned hawk is called a sparrow hawk. In North America a kestrel (falcon) is also called a sparrow hawk. Confused yet?

That is a female Sparrowhawk. The reason i can tell is the coloring and kestrel's are smaller. Please dont harm the bird. It is traumatized.
