Sooo much better than the version on Room for Squares. This is probably one of my more favorite songs by him. <3 John Mayer, if only I could see you live.
The stool squeaking at the beginning of this song has always resonated in me. I remember I made a mix cd of JM with the Room for squares and live in La versions of Neon and felt that something was missing, it was this version, and that stool.
Right, really I agree. I've been using the L.A. version to learn it. Been slowing it down in the software. And I appreciate what your saying about the two finger thing. I'm forcing myself to learn it that way, because I want that 'ragtime' technique under my fingers, and this is a pleasurable way to train myself in it. I'm so impressed with that guy! Not only can he play this, he wrote the #*& thing! Pop star, great lyricist, great melodies, and killer guitarist. Just amazing.
I realy like this version.. played by him when he was like 22 or 21 years old. You can see how he perfected it throughout the years in his L.A. concert.. he makes the bass much more alive there.
@Ccbroo I know what you mean. But I think that's more a function of the bass frequencies being under-emphasized in this studio version. His thumb sounds pretty lively here too, just quieter/less bassy. Lately I've been working on learning that guitar part. I've been playing for a lot of years, and that guitar part is proving to be very challenging. But I intend to nail it, and post a video at some point. I may need another month or two (!!)
@bigearsman I realy like the LA version better. Like you said it appears to have more volume, but I think what makes it sound better is that he returns to the base C in between every chord when moving on the next while I think he doesn't do it here (or its very quiet). Tried to get this song down myself, but the alternating index finger thumb thing is just too hard for me.. maybe in a few months ill get it down with 5 fingers but never with only 2 like he does
@Ccbroo I know! I've been trying to learn that picking style too.Do you read Guitar World magazine? Their acoustic guitar column got me into that, and I've been hooked on this song ever since. Hoping I can learn it well enough to perform it soon.
why does he have to be so damn talented.
