There is an article in the Independent Ugandan newspaper) written by David Bahati which is available online and which I think everyone should read for 2 reasons: 1) It shows the real level of hatred and slander that Bahati spouts about gay people, not the toned down version he uses when speaking to Western press. And 2) the comments section, where Bahati is torn apart by sensible Ugandans who are not in favour of this bill, either for its content or the bad reputation it gives their country

I don't agree that the United States should embrace such a measure. It is pointless, a power grab for government, and I think it is against our God-given respect for life.
Having said this - having conceded the major "argument" posited here - that US society should soundly reject homosexuality, which is a "death style" and not a "lifestyle."
Also the conflation of nature and deeds is problematic to me. Crimes should always be in actions, never in thoughts or beliefs.

The USA did nothing when Uganda's Idi Amin Dada promoted the slaughter of Christiians in the 1970s, and we should do nothing about this. Homosexual conduct has been a serious crime in Uganda since 1950 and this measure moves the offense from life imprisonment to death penalty.
Nobody will be geniunely pleased or upset with Uganda either way.

Ask yourself: if a homosexual who already has earned prison time, has also done ~this~ thing, then is it really so extreme?

Genocide, by definition, could apply to actions taken against persons of a certain religion, race, or ethnicity, but to apply this word to speeders, coin collectors, burglars, or the gay-lesbian-bisexual-transgendered, transsexual, two-spirited, queer-questioning folks and their friends, is of course risible. Whatever actions Uganda take to uphold the so-called "anti-gay" laws certainly are not genocide.

Uganda has been so wracked by HIV/AIDS that 1 million have died from it and 1 million children have been orphaned by it (of 36 million people).
Yet scientific publications, official UN publications, newsletters and so forth refuse to even use the words "homosexual" or "gay" even though they do concede that 80% of HIV transmission is gay-related.
Ugandans have a life expectancy of 53 years, are flat broke by any standard, and the government operates all health care.
