Amazing how these myths get propagated. Here we have the BBC AND Joe Boyd saying that Arnold Layne was banned by the BBC. It wasn't. It was the pirate station, Radio London who banned it. Pink Floyd played it on TOP of The Pops. The BBC objected to the original title of the B side, "Let's Roll Another One" and it was changed to "Candy and A Currant Bun"
I love Pink Floyd. Syd Barrett is my idol. Please add me as a friend and sub me. I am making videos for the band Pink Floyd.you guys should check it out
You're calling us "American fools" out of your own ignorance. Idiotic comments come from both sides of the Atlantic, not just "the colonies". And as far as nationalities go, true music has nothing to do with any sort of boundaries, especially the music of Pink Floyd.
u played floyd that day?? well it would have been better if u didn't becaus they, who were supposed to be their friend, simply abandoned him..and plz stop talking about floyd they became what they were just becouse of him and his strange geniality
Not quite. Sure The Wall did have alot of Syd's path to insanity but it was more about Roger Waters, like how his father died in WWII and his sturggles with his wife. But I mean a film like the movie The Doors which was about the band The Doors. They should make a movie about Syd Barrett.
I know I will get alot of critisism for saying this, but he reminds me a bit of Kurt Cobain. Erratic behavior, drug abuse, and the innability to cope with the crazy fame shoved in the face...not to mention, good looks, that probobly put alot of stress on the both of them, being so intelligent, yet appealing to the dumber crowds. yes, that suckseggs.
Not better, just different. Music by both the early and later Pink Floyd is great. The only time Floyd was bad was the few albums after "Piper at the Gates of Dawn"/before "Meddle". And the last two albums "Division Bell" and that other one.
yeah i agree i also like mostly everything by pink floyd although the musik is completly different... although i disagree in one part...i think a saucerfull of secrets is brilliant too..i mean "set the controls" und "jugband blues" are simply awsome
Excuse me but thats not true, Piper was a great albumn. And the next one a saucerful of secret is also great. That albumn is far better in my opinion then animals, meddle, or the wall which are much better known. The songs in Saucerful of secrets showed roger waters much improved song writing and also existed when the band was still creative.
Syd Barret came to the studio when they were recording it and he had a shaved head and had become overweight so they didn't even recognise him at first. It's quite well documented. He said that he thought it was a bit long.
I was on vacation 5 yrs. ago and had the great privlage of speaking with Sid for only a few min.We only spoke of the weather and the very slow casher at the shop. All of a sudden he says what you havent a Floyd question? My stomach a knot and my teeth chattering I said..as far as I was concerned Pink Floyd started with you and ended with you.He shook my hand and said thank you and signed a road map for me.The map is not for sale.
syd was a genious but when he died suddenly everyone seemed to start saying that the floyd only lived on because of his legend which i think is unfair, i personally feel roger is the genius even tho ofcors he learned SOME things from syd
I agree. Syd's songs were good, but Roger ultimately became the better song writer. Perhaps if it weren't for Syd's life condition (copious lsd usage; or whatever mental disabilities he may have had) he would have gone on to be better. It is still a shame though.
I was away from home when the news broke, I remember being very shocked as it was announced on Channel 4. Only the day before I had sent a text message to an automated encyclopedia asking about Syd's current status. I also watched this episode of Newsnight hoping they would do a feature on Syd and I wasn't disappointed. Credit to the BBC.
I know...i was on the verge of going to cambridge to see him.i had no plans to approach him personally and stress him out.but just to go to St. Margarets Close smoke a fag and hopefully get a glimpse of him doing the gardening and to send him all my love and my memories of all the times i sat in my headphones and his music took me to a different world
@FetaCheese222 Syd wasn't a recluse he was SIMPLY BETTER than all the rest so he didn't have anything to prove. And so what (according to the BBC and others) he dropped out. Did HAVE to be a rock god?
@FetaCheese222 Yeah I know but that's what me and you (reall Floyd fans) all believe. I like to think he realised that it wasn't for him and could spend a peaceful life on the royalities.
He survived the 60s while some of his equals (ie Hendrix) didn't. So, a recluse but a winner in the long run.
@thatsthewayitgoes09 Well, if some of the stories the other band memebers tell about Syd is true (notoably the Wish You Were Here one), then we just have to accept the cold hard truth that he lost his mind, and there's no conspiracies about it.
Did they have to include that awful take to sum up Madcap? I mean, it was bad enough Waters and Gilmour included it on the album as some sort of half-assed artistic statement, but then they had use it in this televised obituary. Why not Late Night, or the Opel take of Won't You Miss Me?
his inspiration came from nowhere in the past, probably a genius for this reason, after him? pink floyd was a great band but nothing to do with the piper , an other division ...
Full marks for Syd but however his role is little bit exagerrated and swollen. He himself woud not had been satisfied with affairs like these.
