  • يادش شاد!

  • I'll remember this day forever.

  • Its a crazy story. Pink Floyd wouldn't be anywhere without him no doubt.

  • Syd the start of something so great

  • Amazing how these myths get propagated. Here we have the BBC AND Joe Boyd saying that Arnold Layne was banned by the BBC. It wasn't. It was the pirate station, Radio London who banned it. Pink Floyd played it on TOP of The Pops. The BBC objected to the original title of the B side, "Let's Roll Another One" and it was changed to "Candy and A Currant Bun"

  • i visited his house wilst on the city wakes festivaL theres something mystical and yet happy about his house and cambridge very special to me x

  • rip syd

  • what is the song at 3:57?

  • The song at 3:57 , called "If it's in you" from his single album Madcap Laughs

  • Did he release it as a sinlge too, or did you mean his solo album? Sorry, I'm easily confused.

  • It's from the album, great album, by the way.

  • Arnold wasn't banned by the bbc...

  • Arnold was banned by radio 1.

  • I love Pink Floyd. Syd Barrett is my idol. Please add me as a friend and sub me. I am making videos for the band Pink Floyd.you guys should check it out

  • As usual... All the American fools leaving idiotic comments. Grow Up.

  • Typical...I agree, although I am American.

  • Xenophobia wont make any point to this discussion.

  • You're calling us "American fools" out of your own ignorance. Idiotic comments come from both sides of the Atlantic, not just "the colonies". And as far as nationalities go, true music has nothing to do with any sort of boundaries, especially the music of Pink Floyd.

  • RIP Syd, may your music live on.

  • Syd Barrett=Musical Genius

  • roger is a wank gilmour is a wank mon our syd

  • roger is a wank gilmour is a wank mon our syd

  • u played floyd that day?? well it would have been better if u didn't becaus they, who were supposed to be their friend, simply abandoned him..and plz stop talking about floyd they became what they were just becouse of him and his strange geniality

  • Get it right dude...Floyd were asked to leave him alone by Syds family. They were protective of him till the end.

  • point you have a little but,syd could not funtion.thats why it had to happen he wanted that.

  • Hearing the news was like a shock. I couldn't believe...

syd is alive. He's just up there, he's the Sun, staring at us, still having fun, being sad... LIVING.

Played some Floyd tunes that day, to commemorate.

  • wish you were here is all about him.

  • Oh, you are right:)

  • syd barrett..sid vicious...sids rock

  • Please, do nt compare Syd Barrett to Sid Vicious, Barrett is in a whole different division!

  • @imperialpod sid vicious could barley play his instrument. I never got why people idolised him?

  • Arnold Lane ... into .. Panty Sniffer !! Holy shit ! As a huge Floyd fan .. I cant' wait to share that trivia w/ my co worker who's a Beatle fan !!

  • Barrett is the greatest, floyd is tryin to try to be, Syd is the heart of pink floyd

  • awesome

  • Why don't they make a movie of Syd Barrett?

  • Too sad...

  • There is. The wall is about him you know..

  • Not quite. Sure The Wall did have alot of Syd's path to insanity but it was more about Roger Waters, like how his father died in WWII and his sturggles with his wife. But I mean a film like the movie The Doors which was about the band The Doors. They should make a movie about Syd Barrett.

  • They maybe with Johnny Depp!

  • AGREE AT ALL!!

  • They were going to (Crazy Diamond) but Waters blocked it (see the most recent revised Crazy Diamond bio on SYd)!

  • It's mostly about Waters. Who said only some lyrics were about Syd, just a couple.

but Wish You Were Herre is more about Syd :)

  • FFGstorm thats so much bullshit syd barret reportedly brokedown and flipped out if anyone referenced pinkfloyd or piper so stfu

  • Long LIVE SYD

  • syd is my nigga fo life i love pink flooooooooyd

  • I know I will get alot of critisism for saying this, but he reminds me a bit of Kurt Cobain. Erratic behavior, drug abuse, and the innability to cope with the crazy fame shoved in the face...not to mention, good looks, that probobly put alot of stress on the both of them, being so intelligent, yet appealing to the dumber crowds. yes, that suckseggs.

  • I like the way you think.

  • maybe in the strict logical sense, but as musical minds not at all

  • No criticism here. I've always thought the same thing.

  • That was a great comment... Syd died last year on my middle sons birthday. I'll never forget it...

  • AL SECOND THAT KIDDA!

  • You still live on in the hearts of many Syd! Shine on forever! No words can describe how great you were. Love you always Syd!

  • love syd...what a troubled life tho...

  • syd is the greatest, he is will live for ever...

  • Not better, just different. Music by both the early and later Pink Floyd is great. The only time Floyd was bad was the few albums after "Piper at the Gates of Dawn"/before "Meddle". And the last two albums "Division Bell" and that other one.

  • yeah i agree i also like mostly everything by pink floyd although the musik is completly different... although i disagree in one part...i think a saucerfull of secrets is brilliant too..i mean "set the controls" und "jugband blues" are simply awsome

  • Excuse me but thats not true, Piper was a great albumn. And the next one a saucerful of secret is also great. That albumn is far better in my opinion then animals, meddle, or the wall which are much better known. The songs in Saucerful of secrets showed roger waters much improved song writing and also existed when the band was still creative.

  • What's an albumn?

  • piper is the best album ever!!

  • i wouldve loved to ask him what he thought about shine on you crazy diamond.

  • Syd Barret came to the studio when they were recording it and he had a shaved head and had become overweight so they didn't even recognise him at first. It's quite well documented. He said that he thought it was a bit long.

  • I was on vacation 5 yrs. ago and had the great privlage of speaking with Sid for only a few min.We only spoke of the weather and the very slow casher at the shop. All of a sudden he says what you havent a Floyd question? My stomach a knot and my teeth chattering I said..as far as I was concerned Pink Floyd started with you and ended with you.He shook my hand and said thank you and signed a road map for me.The map is not for sale.

  • if you're lying I don't appreciate it. If you're not that's amazing.

  • yea, that is bigger bull shit than u can find on any farm

  • That's cool! Can I have the map since it's not for sale?

  • RIP Syd

  • There wouldn't be any Pink Floyd to speak of, wasn't it for Syd Barrett.

Syd IS, was and forever will be Floyd, period.

    'Nuff said!!!

  • syd was a genious but when he died suddenly everyone seemed to start saying that the floyd only lived on because of his legend which i think is unfair, i personally feel roger is the genius even tho ofcors he learned SOME things from syd

  • I agree. Syd's songs were good, but Roger ultimately became the better song writer. Perhaps if it weren't for Syd's life condition (copious lsd usage; or whatever mental disabilities he may have had) he would have gone on to be better. It is still a shame though.

  • the best best best ever

  • Dominoe But wont You miss me is SMASHING

  • I was away from home when the news broke, I remember being very shocked as it was announced on Channel 4. Only the day before I had sent a text message to an automated encyclopedia asking about Syd's current status. I also watched this episode of Newsnight hoping they would do a feature on Syd and I wasn't disappointed. Credit to the BBC.

  • I know...i was on the verge of going to cambridge to see him.i had no plans to approach him personally and stress him out.but just to go to St. Margarets Close smoke a fag and hopefully get a glimpse of him doing the gardening and to send him all my love and my memories of all the times i sat in my headphones and his music took me to a different world

  • Syd may be gone but his legacy and his band Pink Floyd (Such a bitchin name) will live on FOREVER!

    RIP SYD...

  • Good to see. Excellent work PFN.

  • Thanks! I love your PG videos!

  • Why do they always ray "The" Pink Floyd? Or was the band originally called "The Pink Floyd".

  • They were originally The Pink Floyd but changed it in

    1970 I believe.

  • @PFNarek I think they changed it just before they recorded the first album. All the LPs have "Pink Floyd" on them with no "The".

  • @FetaCheese222 Syd wasn't a recluse he was SIMPLY BETTER than all the rest so he didn't have anything to prove. And so what (according to the BBC and others) he dropped out. Did HAVE to be a rock god?

  • @thatsthewayitgoes09 Uh, what does that have to do with what I said?

  • @FetaCheese222 Yeah I know but that's what me and you (reall Floyd fans) all believe. I like to think he realised that it wasn't for him and could spend a peaceful life on the royalities.

He survived the 60s while some of his equals (ie Hendrix) didn't. So, a recluse but a winner in the long run.

  • @thatsthewayitgoes09 Well, if some of the stories the other band memebers tell about Syd is true (notoably the Wish You Were Here one), then we just have to accept the cold hard truth that he lost his mind, and there's no conspiracies about it.

  • It was originally "The pink floyd sound" then they changed it to "The pink floyd", i think dave still sometimes says "the"

  • Yehh, apparently the last time he actually said it officially in an interview was when in like '88 or so.

Yep... those guys definitely are the best, considering they've got a quarter decade on the charts with one album. Haha.

  • @classicROCKguy123 they were also called "The Pink Floyd Sound" back in the day

  • syd wasnt even crazy

  • Puddle-town Tom was the underground

Hold you tight: yer so close

    Yes you are

Please hold on to the steel rail

    Colonel with gloves Straus-leeches

She isn't love on sunday's mail

    All the fibes crock Henrietta

    She's a mean-go-get-her

    Gotta write her a letter

  • Did they have to include that awful take to sum up Madcap? I mean, it was bad enough Waters and Gilmour included it on the album as some sort of half-assed artistic statement, but then they had use it in this televised obituary. Why not Late Night, or the Opel take of Won't You Miss Me?

  • God Bless Syd!!! RIP.

  • his inspiration came from nowhere in the past, probably a genius for this reason, after him? pink floyd was a great band but nothing to do with the piper , an other division ...

  • Dodgy lyrics or not, long live the one and only Pink. it was he and not post 1968 floyd that have influenced so many in the music biz.

  • "there was no ill feeling"?! come on, what do you think he felt like when the band just stopped picking him up for rehearsals? it s sad, really

  • Full marks for Syd but however his role is little bit exagerrated and swollen. He himself woud not had been satisfied with affairs like these. Further line up of the band formed Waters and it has developed logically in his spirit, the main fire then was Waters. Syd´s spirit has somehow persisted in Pink floyd till nowadays but in a strange form -invisible but audible one!.

  • The Madcap Laughs Album is Pretty Good And I Think Its Great That It Was Actually Shown Along with that UFO Footage... Shine On!!!

  • y do all the newspeople call them The Pink Floyd, there is no THE in the title

  • cause at one point they were known as The Pink Floyd Sound or The Pink Floyd.

  • ya that before they got famous

  • The band was originally called "The Pink Floyd Sound." They dropped the "Sound from the name," thus being called "The Pink Floyd." Then they drooped the word "The," and by the time they recorded "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn," the name permutated into "Pink Floyd."

  • yes i know, u basically repeated yourself. In wikipedia it says (kind of long but oh well) David Gilmour is known to have referred to the group as "The Pink Floyd" as late as 1984, though they never released any recordings under that name. In the early days, the band covered rhythm and blues staples such as "Louie, Louie," but by the time the Pink Floyd name was entrenched, they had gained notoriety for their psychedelic interpretations, with extended improvised sections and 'spaced out' solos.

  • Not i dont htink they claim to be an expert on syd there just putting their 2 cents worth. From what ive read, including the book lost in the woods and listneing to interviews with band mates and close friends to him

  • I hate the way everyone thinks they are an expert on Syd, all you can do is read all there is about him and make up your own mind.

  • first of all, hate is the root of cancer, love is the only answer.everyone contributes,to everyones knowlege, like you say,its all good.

  • everthing contributed including the lost of his father at an early stage contributed to a fragile state of mind

  • your right every thing does, but 30 years ago what therapy was he recieving, was it of his own free will, therapy is much different now, less intrusive.

  • but was he mentaly sensitive? Was it the acid?what was his condition?who did acid?

  • it was the acid. the alleged schizophrenia is just a stupid excuse by mr waters who wants to make it look inevitable that things turned that way. if you consider how much of the fripping lsd he has taken over a long period of time, it is no surprise that it looked as if he was mad. continued...

  • Syd was a true artist. (He was very handsome, too!)

Shine on and rest in peace.

  • =( shine shine shine

  • Heartbreaking. He looked like, and made music like, an angel of God. A fallen angel, eventually. Now he's at peace.

  • i think he was in peace when he painted,an angle of song,my hart has his,

  • Drugs are great, but they fuck you up!

  • it was mostly a cronic mild dehidration reaction to chemicals yes made from petro devils blood, water much water would of helped.

  • Shine on Syd!

    The Crazy Diamond lives on

  • good quality, nice job fella.

'the truth was somewhat sadder than the weird theories surrounding him' - what? what 'theories'? who writes the newsnight script? irrelevant and inaccurate - bunch of amateurs.

  • I still can't believe he's gone...but thanks for putting it up man

  • You can't give geniuses acid. Same thing happened to Jaco Pastorius, pure genius, started taking drugs, then his mind turned on itself. Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream,Syd. Rest in Peace in heaven.

  • awesome!

  • I'm a big Syd fan, but missed this tribute, so thanks for putting this up PFNarek.

  • Check out the VH1 Legends - Pink Floyd on this site!

  • Goodbye Syd, shine on.

  • thanks PFNarek, whoever you may be, and thanks to newsnight too lol

  • Your welcome!

  • shine on you crazy diamond
