Why would a young man submit to castration? I suppose coercion was involved?

@baldassare01 They were castrated when they were around 8 years old, so they didn't really have a say in the matter. And oftentimes the doctor performing the surgery would tell the child that he had to be castrated due to disease, and not just to save his pretty voice. Most of the castrated boys came from poor families with more children than they could care for, so their parents had them castrated and shipped off to a special musical institution. That way they had one less mouth to feed.
