Will not forget lynn jenkins, or anyone associated with her. If she's really that dumb she shouldn't be in any political office. Otherwise she said what she meant and shaded a weak apology. Message was already sent. I wouldn't buy a penny's worth of @ss from lynn jenkins......
So she said the Republicans needed a great white hope. BIG FUCKING DEAL! It's a phrase meaning 'we need a hope' and people have used it all the time. It doesn't have a damn thing to do with racism. So stupid.
This white Uncle Tommish fuck wouldn't know racism if it bit him on the ass.
Well thank God we have this wonderful little guy to tell us everything in the world he thinks is racist, nazi, homophobic, sexist, nazi, nazi, racist, etc. Without you keith how can we keep track of all these terrible racists? Why dont you ask the criminal you are talking to, who made a huge deal about HURRICANES NOT HAVING ENOUGH AFRICAN AMERICAN NAMES. Thanks for keeping us bogged down in a race war assholes.
I can see this Uncle Thomas (white Uncle Tom) fuck marching with the New Black Panthers, joining with them to overthrow "the white man". His guest is a batshit insane racist, and this guy who calls people racist as quickly as regular people say "hello" sees no racism at all in anybody if their pigmentation isn't white.
@MyTotalRemedy What is even more troubling is the fact that leftists still manufacture race allegations against anyone who doesn't share their demented world view the exact same way they did during the previous elections. It would be funny if no one bought into it bc they can never back up their claim with any truth or reason, but that's not the case. There is a wide range of demographics that anyone can tap into and exploit to their benefit, and race is what the left has been since the 50's.
@MyTotalRemedy Also, the "poor, poor, victim of the white man's capitalistic greed' maxine waters, like the rest of the fringe left, are the epitome of ugly capitalism. They capitalize on other peoples misery. To people like her, people are poor bc greedy rich white men are taking all their money and rolling them into cigars to smoke at their country clubs, or something along those lines. Pure insanity, that's it. That she is even in office is proof America is dying from within.
Republicans oppose healthcare because they are racist? That makes sense. You got to love liberals. Get a clue! Any attempt by the federal government to provide healthcare is unconstitutional and has nothing to do with race you narrow minded, rich snobish, arrogant liberal. Notice how the black woman is far less upset about this "awful" racist slur then the white newscaster who is so quick to make a republican look bad.
i hate republicans. with unbridled passion. but keith is reading too much into it, that phrase as become rather obscure, it's plausible she didn't know what it meant. I give her a pass. And msnbc just did a liberal version of a Fox news segment. I'm not down with that, it costs us credibility.
Unlike Olbermann, I don't exactly database every possible racist phrase that's possible...I had no idea, but could give a fuck less. This guy's reaching.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Olbermann is a biased dolt. To accuse a congresswoman of being a racist becuase she's never heard of Jack Johnson (had he before reading his staff's research?), and then to invite a bigot and race-baiter like Maxine Waters to weigh in - well, as a "white guy" Olbermann makes me ashamed.
even if she hadn't heard of Jack Johnson, reasonable since I haven't myself, still there isn't many ways to see "great white hope" other then, we need to get rid of the darkie, or maybe, saving white people, which would still imply white people needing saving from something not white.
Its not the Liberals that derailed the presidents speech abought positive influence to thousand of school kids. Its not the Liberals that are refusing basic healthcare to thousands w/o health insurance. Its also not Liberals who are staging protests nationwide because we don't like our new black president. You and your Retardlican buddys are the only hateful ones now! Racists, Hatemongers and Social Regressives.
@TheSuperLiberal the cry of "Racism" is old and tired. It's sad that some people can only see skin color (aka progressives) and belive people should be treated differently because of race. Obama is a disaster, not because of his race, but because of his policies. Some belive that because he is black he represents something special and MUST be treated special, the reality is I follow the teachings of Rev Martin Luther King, by judging him the content of his character and NOT the color of his skin
@andynorris Are you high? You think the media treated Bush with kid gloves?...I didn't support Bush because i didn't support his policies but he wasn't stupid and the joke that he couldn't read was false, he read over 100 book a year, mostly history and biography.
I'm not even going to argue with your blatantly ignorant comment. Just go to factcheckdotorg and see for yourself. Its the Conservatives that are lying and fearmongering, you're just one of them buying into it!
Olberman forgets to mention that those who were the greatest race haters during the years he spoke about were the Democrats. Does Jim Crow or "separate but equal" ring a bell? Heck, the current Senior Senator in the Democrat Party was a real Grand Wizard in the KKK. Maxine Waters is only a pawn, not having sufficient knowledge of her past is her greatest handicap.
Personally, I think Jackson vs. Ali would be the greatest fight ever... and it doesn't make a hill of beans about color !
So in the interest of being "Fair and Balanced" Olbermann should have brought up the history of Jim Crow and Dixiecrats, Smear Rep. Waters and bring up the history of a 92 year old senator who quit the KKK over 57 years ago and says "I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened."- Robert C. Byrd, THEN address The racist nature of Jenkins comment. Brilliant sheldontoo!
I second that congress women Lyn Jenkins our black/white president is racist openly and openly seeks his black agenda. If any of these people took the time to go over Obamas past he defines it quite absolute in his acquaintances, his friends, his wife, his speeches, and his books spoken from his own mouth. He said in his own words he wanted to remove the white from his blood.
GOOD COMMENT..MAXINE WATERS IS A DIRTBAG. kEITH oLbERMNANN needs a personal ass whooping and I would LOVE to deliver it. He is treading water because there's nothing to report on republicans. They're NOT committing fraud like tens of democrats are. IDIOTS4OBAMA COM Hey Keith, you self loathing white pussy..get a spine and maybe you will finally get laid..pussy
Maxine Waters, LOL, LOL. This is the dumb idiot who praised Franklin Raines for his great leadership of Fannie Mae. And I just absolutely hate Doperman. He's the worst person in the world.
man wtf is wrong with Lynn Jenkins acting so stupid wtf is wrong with her she's a racist if you call a black person a "nigga" you are trying to offend them if you call a white person "white boy" you are trying to offend them it doesn't make a difference with the great white hope man racists make me so mad and why do people only want people from their party to win really idc which party wins anything i just want God's will to be done if a republican wins the election next eyar and makes the
Easy, I have read all your post and concluded that you must most definitely be a flaming racist. Enjoy your new title. See how easy it is to brand someone or some group. No facts required.
I have made no racist statements aeross60 . I made a deliberately bigoted statement about "all Republicans" hoping that some one would challenge it. Instead of a a challenge or a rebuttal I am called a racist.
Is that because proving that countless Republicans are assholes would be too easy? (Oh. of course I would be willing to stipulate that not ALL Republicans are assholes)
Is there anyone in this country or the world who hears something like "the great white hope" and thinks of "a bright future"? No one ever uses "white hope" in that meaning. I'm willing to believe that Jenkins wanted to say "bright hope" and accidentally said "white" because "great white hope" is a known phrase. But if that is so, why didn't she say it was a mistake?
It seems like YOU are the one who like to say what other people think not liberals CommonSenseJoe. What has Olbermann said to indicate that he does not accept Jenkins apology during or since this broadcast?
The controversy surrounding U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins disclaiming of the phrase great white hope came less than a month after she had supported a resolution referencing that same phrase
... lawmaker supported a resolution that included that exact phrase last month when the House approved by unanimous consent a measure urging President Obama to pardon black U.S. boxer Jack Johnson. Johnson, who died in 1946. He was the target of an early 1900s racist plot ... - T. FELTS and V. MOSS, Ottowa Herald
I'm a Dem and I think this was just a slip. There are people who don't know "great white hope" had that meaning. Every time I had ever heard it, it was an innocuous statement. Keith makes too much of this and should focus more on the actual debate of the policy.
Just because it does not impact on YOU you can say he makes too much of it. But is if does not Affect you it is not your call.
Many people especially African Americans have seen recent attacks on President Obama as being motivated by race. It is a prominent topic of discussion.
It may or may not have been a slip MrPlaid81. She is a member of Congress and should know better. We should expect more of our representatives.
The point I was making was about the ignorance of the history of the statement.
I don't doubt that there have been racist statements. Frank Luntz's playbook calls for usage of implicit racism which is recognized only unconsciously. There was a lady in town who had a sign that was overtly racist. Yes it's real. I just don't think this is one of those instances.
I agree that congress should be better, but, should be and actually can be miles apart.
You may not think the use of the phrase was intentional but unfortunately there is no way to prove that.
I was an activist in the sixties, I live in a college town, all of my friends, children, grandchildren, etc. are well aware of the phrase and it's meaning. There are millions upon millions of Americans who would find it's use offensive. Congressional representative have lost their seats for that kind of insensitivity.
One should be just as conscientious about offending ANY ethnicity.
Hey, if she was aware and it was intentional I'm all for Keith going after her. If it wasn't (and to me it is possible) how can you be conscientious of an offense you're genuinely ignorant of? In either case I did think the segment could have been used on something more damning especially in regards (to my generation) a statement whose sting is lost to the generation gap.
This conversation began by discussing the dumbing the America and whether or not ignorance is a valid excuse MrPlaid81. i.e. 24% of Americans don't know what country we fought in the Revolutionary War or 18% think that the sun revolves around the earth, nearly 50% don't believe in evolution, etc.
"Ignorance in a court of law or in life does not absolve one of culpability or responsibility. There are many things we are expected to know and understand whether we live through it or not."
I believe intent is also factored into any judgment passed. As you said earlier, "there is no way to prove" what her intent was. Besides what crime was committed here other than her admission that the republicans got jack squat? I got no problem with that!
The reason is that you already believe all conservatives and Republicans are racists. You then look for what you think confirms that assumption.
Liberals always call to know what conservatives really mean by what they say. Constantly hear I see them posting videos about Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh calling them racists and such.
I don't believe that all conservatives are racists and I have never said so. In fact the only ones I have seen say that are conservatives.
I do think that Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh and most Republicans are self serving assholes. I am not happy with what the Democrats are doing but Republicans are flaming assholes.
Name one liberal who said what conservatives really meant and what was it CommonSenseJoe .
To be fair Glenn Beck called the President a Racist, then immediately backpedaled and then said it again in the same interview. I don't keep tabs on Rush; I don't care for his work. Conservatives always claim what Liberals intend as well. Your above statement is an example.
Here's what i don't get. Obama couldn't of won the election unless a majority of white people voted for him because we all know black people are a minority. (and typically seldom vote, if they even still have the right to vote) So why are so many white people upset? It was yall dat voted the man in!
My observation is that it is a loud and angry minority of sore losers. Many of them are poorly educated and poorly informed. Being fed bullshit by Faux News, the GOP corporate rabble rouser's and the shock jocks does not help.
Insulting the other side does not make your position any stronger. The President has a problem with the American people because he has misled and deceived them. They are quickly getting tired of it. It is getting more and more difficult for the media to carry the water for him.
This congresswoman is definitely a racist bitch. Now she is apologizing for her racist remark. Well she can take her apology and shove it up her racist ass
Every conservative and Republican is a racist according to you people. Someday black people wake up and realize how the Democrats have lied and used them. Too bad it will be too late!
Unlike you am not arrogant enough to think that 40million African Americans are wrong or that race is an issue because they want it to be. I also watched Detroit burn and I know why it happened.
I never called you or anyone else a racist CommonSenseJoe. I did say that "great white hope " is a racist phrase which is true. I also said that you and most modern day "conservatives" were arrogant, ignorant and self serving which is also true. Every comment you make proves it.
Well, then we disagree. If black people ever want to achieve real equality they are going to have to stop inventing racism where none exists.
Whether you called me a racist or not, that is the mindset of most liberals. Insults me does not make your point either.
The phrase "great white hope" as she used it was not racist. Everyone knows it. Inventing outrage over her saying this is what Keith is trying to do. Typical liberal hypocrisy using race as a weapon to attack conservatives.
Just because it's been around forever doesn't make it right. It never had any other meaning besides a racial one. Anyone who believes otherwise is in denial. They need to impeach this bitch.
BTW - Obama is Half-Black which totally makes her statement RACIST and RELEVANT.
I'm curious, Just when did "great White hope" it get to mean something else other than a racist comment (in your mind) and what do you think that new meaning is CommonSenseJoe?
People use it, not in reference to race, but to the idea of finding someone to beat a person they think is unbeatable. Making it about race is simply wrong. Keith just trying to manufacture outrage where there is none.
Please give me an example of what "people" used it, And did they use it in front of African Americans? I BET NOT, it would be a stupid thing to do.
When in all of your glorious delusion do you think it stopped being about race? Your stubbornness in cloaking your ignorance in more ignorance is simply mind blowing.
Were you ever an activist about anything beyond getting your next beer? Do you have any idea how difficult the civil rights struggle has been? You're clueless aren't you?
I have heard African Americans use the phrase. I have heard it used in movies. It is not a racist statement. It is like the phrase, "knight in shining armor".
I grew up in the midst of the civil rights struggle. It was made more difficult by some people who turn any and every white person into a racist.
You sound as though you might have watched part of the civil rights movement on television but didn't get it CommonSenseJoe.
First you make a racist statement by comparing 40million African Americans to a few rap artists then you compound it by saying "i could care less what 40million black people think about it"
You sound like a typical modern day conservative, arrogant, ignorant and self serving. Thank you for being the poster boy for "conservatism" that you are, not so CommonSenseJoe.
I lived through it. I watch black people burn down parts of Detroit with my own eyes. I got it quite well.
I could care less what 40 million black people think if what they think is wrong. The reason race is an issue is because they want to it always be the issue. No one can speak unless they clear their words through some liberal filter of what is or is not racist.
Biden can refer to OBama as "clean and articulate" and still be elected vice-president with him. That is hypocrisy!
Like most Americans you dont understand racism or the residual effects of slavery. You probably think slavery ended with the emancipation proclamation. Wrong, vagrancy laws and prison farms were used to keep Negroes working for masters well into the 50s. Taken from their land against their will, persecuted for 400 years, familys destroyed, refused work or education, jailed disproportionately, economically and psychologically decimated but free right? When? when Martin Luther King Died?
I understand that most white people today did not participate in slavery. It also should be pointed out that whites are not the only one's who enslaved people. Black people have enslaved other black people for centuries before America was founded.
I am not trying to minimize what black people as a race have suffered. I do think that progress has been made. I don't think serves the interest of racial harmony to manufacture racism that DOES NOT EXIST! At some point, you need to get over it.
Whether most White people participated in slavery or not is irrelevant.
Saying that someone should "just get over it" following a modicum of "progress" is the pentacle of arrogance and ignorance.
Like most Americans, you obviously don't know what Racism isCommonSenseJoe. It is a word that gets bandied about and misused daily, particularly by wingnuts. Before you claim to seek racial harmony, I suggest that you learn what it means. That will take considerable research and won't happen here.
Sure it does! We are being punished for the sins of the past. Black people will never achieve equality by forcing white people to suffer for the past.
The phrase is an historically racist statement. Olbermann even explained its history. That you are not aware of it only belies your own ignorance CommonSenseJoe.
How do you think the phrase impacted the millions of African Americans struggling for rights and freedom over the last century? There have been books and plays written and films made about it.
It is only racist if you want to make it out to be racist. Many people use the phrase differently than when it was first used historically. Only because we now have a black president is everything seen as racist.
It has been crystal clear my whole life. I was clear in the 40' s and 50's when African Americans were migrating north for work. It was clear in the 60's and 70's during the struggle for fair housing. I was clear during all of the struggles for elected office EVER. It did not change when Obama was elected.
If you think the current aberrant wingnut behavior towards President Obama is somehow justified, you are not only ignorant but completely off your rocker CommonSenseJoe .
"Republicans are struggling right now to find the great White hope" Maybe she did not necessarily single out President Obama but it is a statement that means something to most African Americans and that does include the president.
You have not witnessed aberrant behavior toward President Obama by wingnuts? What planet are you on CommonSenseJoe?
You mean you think you have the right to tell 15% of the population what they can be offended by? You think you can decide what it means to all the 40 + million African Americans it was directed for the last 60 + years? What colossal arrogance. IT IS NOT YOUR CALL CommonSenseJoe.
Nobody is railroading anybody. She is in Congress and SHOULD know better.
No one has to make it a racist statement it IS now and always has been a racist statement. What you feel about it is irrellevant.
It is not a racist statement. It was meant as a racist statement. You can be offended all you want. Some black people just live to be offended. I am offended when the President insults a white police officer for doing his job. I am offended when the President brings up racial profiling in reference to a situation that had nothing to do with race.
You don't get to decide when a statement that has been considered racist for 100 years is no longer racist based on your OPINION CommonSenseJoe. You also don't get to decide how over 40 million African Americans feel about it. (We've firmly established your arrogance.)
I did not call Congressman Jenkins comment aberrant I was referring to wingnut behavior towards President Obama in general.
Answer my question, when did "great White hope" get to be not a racist statement and why?
I have already explained that. Most people don't even think of it in the terms of race. Frankly, I could care less what 40 million black people think about it. They pay millions to buy records of punks who call black women whores and bitches, but if a white guy says the same thing on the radio, he has to be fired for it. I don't think much of their sensibilities.
I Said that I value the opinion of the millions who are effected more than your opinion.
I have known many people of varying ethnic backgrounds who do not share the same social and political views or experiences that their ethnicity might indicate. There are some African American Republicans that say and do things that baffle me. I have know Italians who think they're Black and Indians who know very little of their country of origin. The melting pot remember?
I value the opinion of the millions who are directly effected by the racial slur in the cartoon more than yours jkerouac02. After all it does not directly concern you you no matter how reasoned you may think your assessment is. It does, however, effect the social and political climate in your country. That should concern you.
"how would you react if a Dem said it?" - jkerouac02
Interesting that you mentioned watching Bill Maher, while I do enjoy him, what I posted I read. I also read that identical tests were given to high school students in New Jersey and in Belgium. The Belgian kids cleaned the American kids' clocks. It was an above average Jersey school yet the Belgians thought the Americans were stupid. The Americans were, of course, dumbfounded.
My point is, the only excuse for not knowing is not knowing. That can be remedied, research and read.
Maybe age, geographical location, or other factors influence ... for sure, hence the dumbing of America. When I entered the 1st grade, being conscious of ethnic and social sensitivities was important, after all America is a melting pot. Is that true today? Perhaps living in a college town has influenced my expectations of my children and grand children and thats why they are aware of and abhor the effects of the cartoon's racial content and know the meaning of the great white hope.
"articulate and clean"? Do you think you're making a relevant point here platipot? How does, what is at best, a social faux pas, relate to an historically known racist statement?
You obviously did not understand the racial connotations in the cartoon in the way that millions of Americans did. We all need to understand the effects our collective actions have had on others throughout history so that we do not repeat those transgressions.
Ignorance in a court of law or in life does not absolve one of culpability or responsibility. There are many things we are expected to know and understand whether we live through it or not.
Polls show that a majority of Americans cannot name a single branch of government, or explain what the Bill of Rights is. 24% could not name the country America fought in the Revolutionary War. More than 65% dont know whats in Roe v. Wade. 66% dont know what the Food and Drug Administration does, 18% think the sun revolves around the earth. 8% don't know Hawaii is a state, etc., etc.
I didn't mean to offend you and I didn't expect you to be so defensive. In my world admitting ones ignorance is a sign of intelligence because it is the first step towards correcting it.
My point is that not knowing the racial connotations is not a valid excuse. It's like saying I didn't know that Hawaii was a state.
Nobody called anybody a racist. It was questioned whether or not the statement was deliberately racist. Can or should a Congressman be that ignorant
It is good of you to admit your ignorance jkerouac02. It does much to point up what has become the overall dumbing of America.
"Great White Hope" is one of the most classically racist statements of the century along with "that's mighty white of you". And that cartoon WAS an absolute travesty. Yet even a good Liberal like you was not aware of it.
Jack Kerouc knew this too, he and I were there. I hope we don't all have to live through history to learn from it.
ok mister sensitivity if she was someone from China and i said that because they were someone from China and didn't exactly know what that term ment i guess i would be a racist then, so in simpler terms if someone is not involved with sports and does not know the meaning by all the terms doesn't make them racist, it was a generalization or can we not use those anymore
If you are an American "the great white hope" is a phrase out of YOUR history. If you don't know your history that is called ignorance. You may have a million excuses for that ignorance but that won't make you less ignorant.
I do not deny that it comes out of our history, but I do deny that it means that today. She apologize if it offended anyone and that should have been sufficient for any reasonable person. Keith attempting to make this into something it is not is totally wrong.
This is not surprising though. Liberals will use the race card to shield the President from any and all criticism. Everyone that questions him is really racist and just can't accept a Black president. It is intellectually dishonest.
Are you completely blind and ignorant CommonSenseJoe? It is not the Liberals or Progressives who can't accept a Black President. It's people like Jenkins who feel a need to seek a great white hope and all the birthers, people painting Hitler mustaches , calling the president a Marxist, Communist, accusing him of arranging death panels etc. etc. What the f*ck do you think that is?
No, it is people like you who want to paint those people are racists because they diagree with President. They would disagree with the President if he were ALL WHITE. He is a liberal with socialist ideas that will destroy our country.
I don't have to give you any evidence. People who want to reserve the use of the term "racist" to themselves alone and rest of us have to be "sensitive". Grow up and get over it. As long as black people play the victim, they will always be the victim.
It is only your OPINION that her statement was not a racist one. You have made it clear that you don't care what 40million African Americans think or anyone else for that matter and you refuse to give evidence to indicate that it is not a racist statement while history and common sense says it is.
Obama has less of a bent towards socialism than FDR. The rest is wingnut hype.
Let me know when White people become victims of Racism CommonSenseJoe . But first you have to learn what Racism is.
"Let me know when White people become victims of Racism CommonSenseJoe ."
Sure looks like you think white people cannot be the victims of racism.
Frankly, I am not concerned with what you think 40 million African Americans think.
Keith does this all the time. Takes something out of context and makes it into something totally different. I speak for myself. I don't see anything racist in what she said. You can call it whatever you want. But first you have to learn what Racism is.
White people are not victims of Racism, Period. The can be but their oppression is certainly not imminent.
You've made it abundantly clear that how African Americans are affected does not concern you.
That is only your OPINION about Keith. Give me a concrete example.
I know that you speak for yourself and don't see her statement as a racist one. It's meaning changed to suit your argument. Hence your self serving arrogance and ignorance.
White people are the victims of racism everyday. We just don't whine about it as much as black people do. I don't get all excited when black people jump on their high horse and start screaming racist when a conservative says something they don't like.
Look at everything he says. It is all designed to manufacture outrage at Republicans and specifically conservatives.
The phrase was not used in racist way nor was it intended to be racist. She apologized but that was not enough for some.
Being offended by bigotry is not the same as being the victim of Racism CommonSenseJoe. Victims of Racism are those who have been oppressed.
LOL, Black people on a high horse is an oxymoron.
Nobody has to manufacture anything about Republicans or the modern day conservative. Their whole platform is based on deceit, fear mongering and fomenting unrest among the opposition. They provide plenty of ammo daily. Keith and others have a hard time keeping up with it. So when Jenkins says ...
Oh yes, black people get on their high horse. Remember what Jesse Jackson said he wanted to do to OBama?
You dismissed what I said about rappers, but look who is buying all that trash about hoes and bitches. A black man can call a woman a "nappy headed ho" but let a white guy do it and he is a racist.
The best example is how Biden calls OBama "clean and articulate", but that is not racist.
True, but I don't spend billions to buy their records and emulate the lifestyle of rednecks. It is hypocritical to support such demeaning language and behavior with your hard earned money and then be offended by this woman's remark.
I know the difference between being offend and racism. When a better qualified while man is passed over for a promotion for a poorly quality black man, that is racism.
One of the reasons I referred to you as self serving
CommonSenseJoe is because you continually conflate your personal tastes and desires with broad social issues. I don't like rap any more than you do. So what? That SOME Black people (and some White people) participate in the rap industry is irrelevant.
Affirmative action was implemented in place of reparations. Some people don't like it because it may discriminate. It is not the same as oppressing a group of people through racism.
Using race as a determining factor is racism. What King wanted is what I want. Judge people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.
As for reparations, there is no basis for them. You cannot base them on race since the blacks of today are not the ones who were "wrong" in the past. There is no logical basis to assume that their lives back in Africa would have been better than here.
Using race as a determining factor is discrimination not racism.
That's funny, the Japanese receive reparations. Reparations is still on the table for African Americans. Several universities and congress people are working on it.
Some believe that have already begun with President OBama. I think we have paid black people enough money to sit on their asses. Time for them to start pulling their own weight in society.
now you got it she was ignorant of the phrase " the great white hope" and it's meaning, that doesn't mean she is racist and that she meant anything racist by it, so my analogy is right she is ignorant not racist , don't mix those up.
you must be kidding!!!!!!!!!!! are talking about the same video ? please stick to one argument is she a racist as the clown olbermann claims or is she just ignorant of the meaning of that phrase. besides she apologized already that should be the end of it. he needs to use the same set of standards for the right side and the left
one more thing " NOBODY" was you, when you say she said this racist comment it implies that the person who said it is racist, quit blowing everything out of proportion.
Kieth Olbermann talking to Maxine Waters. I think I lose iq points just exposing myself to this. These are two of the stupidest fucken people ever to get famous. That was not a Fruedian slip.
Tell you what , I'll say this woman is a racist if you agree Joe Biden is a racist for once saying Obama was the first "articulate and clean" black man to run for President. And lets not forget that crack he made about needing an Indian accent to go in 7-11. Or maybe the time Hillary Clinton said that Ghandi "ran a gas station in downdown Cleaveland". . Wait! I know. How about Obama himself saying his grandmother was a "typical white person"? Is Ms. Waters a "typical black person"?
I don't remember the same standard being applied to Obama when just a few days ( not seven monthes) after Sarah Palin made a lipstick joke he brought out the old "lipstick on a pig" line. Which is it? Do old expressions mean what they mean or what is political at the time.
Lipstick on a pig is not a racist statement. The great white hope has always had racist meaning. I can't believe anyone would defend this woman for making such a clearly racist statement. If anyone doesn't think its a racist statement then they are a racist themselves.
republicans never do anything wrong and cannot take critizsm. if they do something wrong its either political or the dems fault

Will not forget lynn jenkins, or anyone associated with her. If she's really that dumb she shouldn't be in any political office. Otherwise she said what she meant and shaded a weak apology. Message was already sent. I wouldn't buy a penny's worth of @ss from lynn jenkins......
bhamSly68 4 months ago
So she said the Republicans needed a great white hope. BIG FUCKING DEAL! It's a phrase meaning 'we need a hope' and people have used it all the time. It doesn't have a damn thing to do with racism. So stupid.
This white Uncle Tommish fuck wouldn't know racism if it bit him on the ass.

MyTotalRemedy 4 months ago
@MyTotalRemedy What is even more troubling is the fact that leftists still manufacture race allegations against anyone who doesn't share their demented world view the exact same way they did during the previous elections. It would be funny if no one bought into it bc they can never back up their claim with any truth or reason, but that's not the case. There is a wide range of demographics that anyone can tap into and exploit to their benefit, and race is what the left has been since the 50's.
Rammagith 4 months ago
@MyTotalRemedy Also, the "poor, poor, victim of the white man's capitalistic greed' maxine waters, like the rest of the fringe left, are the epitome of ugly capitalism. They capitalize on other peoples misery. Pure insanity, that's it. That she is even in office is proof America is dying from within.

Is there anyone in this country or the world who hears something like "the great white hope" and thinks of "a bright future"? No one ever uses "white hope" in that meaning. Johnson, who died in 1946. He was the target of an early 1900s racist plot ... - T. FELTS and V. MOSS, Ottowa Herald
easymike 2 years ago
I'm a Dem and I think this was just a slip. There are people who don't know "great white hope" had that meaning. Every time I had ever heard it, it was an innocuous statement. Keith makes too much of this and should focus more on the actual debate of the policy.
MrPlaid81 2 years ago
Just because it does not impact on YOU you can say he makes too much of it. But is if does not Affect you it is not your call.
Many people especially African Americans have seen recent attacks on President Obama as being motivated by race. It is a prominent topic of discussion.
It may or may not have been a slip MrPlaid81. She is a member of Congress and should know better. We should expect more of our representatives.
easymike 2 years ago
The point I was making was about the ignorance of the history of the statement.
I don't doubt that there have been racist statements. Frank Luntz's playbook calls for usage of implicit racism which is recognized only unconsciously. There was a lady in town who had a sign that was overtly racist. Yes it's real. I just don't think this is one of those instances.
I agree that congress should be better, but, should be and actually can be miles apart.
MrPlaid81 2 years ago
You may not think the use of the phrase was intentional but unfortunately there is no way to prove that.
I was an activist in the sixties, I live in a college town, all of my friends, children, grandchildren, etc. are well aware of the phrase and it's meaning. There are millions upon millions of Americans who would find it's use offensive. Congressional representative have lost their seats for that kind of insensitivity.
One should be just as conscientious about offending ANY ethnicity.
easymike 2 years ago
Hey, if she was aware and it was intentional I'm all for Keith going after her. If it wasn't (and to me it is possible) how can you be conscientious of an offense you're genuinely ignorant of? In either case I did think the segment could have been used on something more damning especially in regards (to my generation) a statement whose sting is lost to the generation gap.
MrPlaid81 2 years ago
This conversation began by discussing the dumbing the America and whether or not ignorance is a valid excuse MrPlaid81. i.e. 24% of Americans don't know what country we fought in the Revolutionary War or 18% think that the sun revolves around the earth, nearly 50% don't believe in evolution, etc.
"Ignorance in a court of law or in life does not absolve one of culpability or responsibility. There are many things we are expected to know and understand whether we live through it or not."
easymike 2 years ago
I believe intent is also factored into any judgment passed. As you said earlier, "there is no way to prove" what her intent was. Besides what crime was committed here other than her admission that the republicans got jack squat? I got no problem with that!

Liberals always call to know what conservatives really mean by what they say. Constantly hear I see them posting videos about Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh calling them racists and such.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
I don't believe that all conservatives are racists and I have never said so. In fact the only ones I have seen say that are conservatives.

MrPlaid81 2 years ago

MrPlaid81 2 years ago
Here's what i don't get. Obama couldn't of won the election unless a majority of white people voted for him because we all know black people are a minority. I never called you or anyone else a racist CommonSenseJoe. I did say that "great white hope " is a racist phrase which is true. I also said that you and most modern day "conservatives" were arrogant, ignorant and self serving which is also true. Every comment you make proves it.
easymike 2 years ago
Well, then we disagree. If black people ever want to achieve real equality they are going to have to stop inventing racism where none exists.
Whether you called me a racist or not, that is the mindset of most liberals. Insults me does not make your point either.
The phrase "great white hope" as she used it was not racist. Everyone knows it. Inventing outrage over her saying this is what Keith is trying to do. Typical liberal hypocrisy using race as a weapon to attack conservatives.

TheSuperLiberal 2 years ago
It means many things. She was not making an historical reference.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
I'm curious, Just when did "great White hope" it get to mean something else other than a racist comment (in your mind) and what do you think that new meaning is CommonSenseJoe?
easymike 2 years ago
People use it, not in reference to race, but to the idea of finding someone to beat a person they think is unbeatable. Making it about race is simply wrong. Keith just trying to manufacture outrage where there is none.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
Please give me an example of what "people" used it, And did they use it in front of African Americans? I BET NOT, it would be a stupid thing to do.
When in all of your glorious delusion do you think it stopped being about race? Your stubbornness in cloaking your ignorance in more ignorance is simply mind blowing.
Were you ever an activist about anything beyond getting your next beer? Do you have any idea how difficult the civil rights struggle has been? You're clueless aren't you?
easymike 2 years ago
I have heard African Americans use the phrase. I have heard it used in movies. It is not a racist statement. It is like the phrase, "knight in shining armor".
I grew up in the midst of the civil rights struggle. It was made more difficult by some people who turn any and every white person into a racist.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
You sound as though you might have watched part of the civil rights movement on television but didn't get it CommonSenseJoe.
First you make a racist statement by comparing 40million African Americans to a few rap artists then you compound it by saying "i could care less what 40million black people think about it"
You sound like a typical modern day conservative, arrogant, ignorant and self serving. Thank you for being the poster boy for "conservatism" that you are, not so CommonSenseJoe.
easymike 2 years ago
I lived through it. I watch black people burn down parts of Detroit with my own eyes. I got it quite well.
I could care less what 40 million black people think if what they think is wrong. The reason race is an issue is because they want to it always be the issue. No one can speak unless they clear their words through some liberal filter of what is or is not racist.
Biden can refer to OBama as "clean and articulate" and still be elected vice-president with him. That is hypocrisy!
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
Like most Americans you dont understand racism or the residual effects of slavery. You probably think slavery ended with the emancipation proclamation. Wrong, vagrancy laws and prison farms were used to keep Negroes working for masters well into the 50s. Taken from their land against their will, persecuted for 400 years, familys destroyed, refused work or education, jailed disproportionately, economically and psychologically decimated but free right? When? when Martin Luther King Died?
easymike 2 years ago
I understand that most white people today did not participate in slavery. It also should be pointed out that whites are not the only one's who enslaved people. Black people have enslaved other black people for centuries before America was founded.
I am not trying to minimize what black people as a race have suffered. I do think that progress has been made. I don't think serves the interest of racial harmony to manufacture racism that DOES NOT EXIST! At some point, you need to get over it.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
Whether most White people participated in slavery or not is irrelevant.
Saying that someone should "just get over it" following a modicum of "progress" is the pentacle of arrogance and ignorance.
Like most Americans, you obviously don't know what Racism isCommonSenseJoe. It is a word that gets bandied about and misused daily, particularly by wingnuts. Before you claim to seek racial harmony, I suggest that you learn what it means. That will take considerable research and won't happen here.

easymike 2 years ago
The phrase as she used it was not racist. This is just another example of manufacturing outrage.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
The phrase is an historically racist statement. Olbermann even explained its history. That you are not aware of it only belies your own ignorance CommonSenseJoe.
How do you think the phrase impacted the millions of African Americans struggling for rights and freedom over the last century? There have been books and plays written and films made about it.
Your ignorance is just that, YOUR ignorance.
easymike 2 years ago
It is only racist if you want to make it out to be racist. Many people use the phrase differently than when it was first used historically. Only because we now have a black president is everything seen as racist.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
It has been crystal clear my whole life. I was clear in the 40' s and 50's when African Americans were migrating north for work. It was clear in the 60's and 70's during the struggle for fair housing. I was clear during all of the struggles for elected office EVER. It did not change when Obama was elected.
If you think the current aberrant wingnut behavior towards President Obama is somehow justified, you are not only ignorant but completely off your rocker CommonSenseJoe .
easymike 2 years ago
I have not aberrant behavior towards President OBama. The comment was not even directed toward President OBama. She was speaking about Republicans.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
"Republicans are struggling right now to find the great White hope" Maybe she did not necessarily single out President Obama but it is a statement that means something to most African Americans and that does include the president.
You have not witnessed aberrant behavior toward President Obama by wingnuts? What planet are you on CommonSenseJoe?

Most African Americans would not have understood the reference as racist.
You call it aberrant. I have seen this President get a pass on just about everything he does.

Congressman Jenkins and your best defense is ignorance. I do understand that SOME people just don't get it. Others mean every bit of it.
easymike 2 years ago
The phrase has come to mean many different things. To attempt to make it a racist statement and try to railroad this woman is just wrong.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
You mean you think you have the right to tell 15% of the population what they can be offended by? You think you can decide what it means to all the 40 + million African Americans it was directed for the last 60 + years? What colossal arrogance. IT IS NOT YOUR CALL CommonSenseJoe.
Nobody is railroading anybody. She is in Congress and SHOULD know better.
No one has to make it a racist statement it IS now and always has been a racist statement. What you feel about it is irrellevant.
easymike 2 years ago
That is irrelevant.
easymike 2 years ago
It is not a racist statement. It was meant as a racist statement. You can be offended all you want. Some black people just live to be offended. I am offended when the President insults a white police officer for doing his job. I am offended when the President brings up racial profiling in reference to a situation that had nothing to do with race.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
You don't get to decide when a statement that has been considered racist for 100 years is no longer racist based on your OPINION CommonSenseJoe. You also don't get to decide how over 40 million African Americans feel about it. (We've firmly established your arrogance.)
I did not call Congressman Jenkins comment aberrant I was referring to wingnut behavior towards President Obama in general.
Answer my question, when did "great White hope" get to be not a racist statement and why?
easymike 2 years ago
I have already explained that. Most people don't even think of it in the terms of race. Frankly, I could care less what 40 million black people think about it. They pay millions to buy records of punks who call black women whores and bitches, but if a white guy says the same thing on the radio, he has to be fired for it. I don't think much of their sensibilities.

IT"S A TRAP!
sjs4763 2 years ago
It is good of you to admit your ignorance jkerouac02. It does much to point up what has become the overall dumbing of America.
"Great White Hope" is one of the most classically racist statements of the century along with "that's mighty white of you". And that cartoon WAS an absolute travesty. Yet even a good Liberal like you was not aware of it.
Jack Kerouc knew this too, he and I were there. I hope we don't all have to live through history to learn from it.
easymike 2 years ago
ok mister sensitivity if she was someone from China and i said that because they were someone from China and didn't exactly know what that term ment i guess i would be a racist then, so in simpler terms if someone is not involved with sports and does not know the meaning by all the terms doesn't make them racist, it was a generalization or can we not use those anymore
cmmnsns4u 2 years ago
Your analogy is completely false cmmnsns4u.
If you are an American "the great white hope" is a phrase out of YOUR history. If you don't know your history that is called ignorance. You may have a million excuses for that ignorance but that won't make you less ignorant.
easymike 2 years ago
I do not deny that it comes out of our history, but I do deny that it means that today. She apologize if it offended anyone and that should have been sufficient for any reasonable person. Keith attempting to make this into something it is not is totally wrong.
This is not surprising though. Liberals will use the race card to shield the President from any and all criticism. Everyone that questions him is really racist and just can't accept a Black president. It is intellectually dishonest.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
Are you completely blind and ignorant CommonSenseJoe? It is not the Liberals or Progressives who can't accept a Black President. It's people like Jenkins who feel a need to seek a great white hope and all the birthers, people painting Hitler mustaches , calling the president a Marxist, Communist, accusing him of arranging death panels etc. etc. What the f*ck do you think that is?
Your denial is wrong. You give no evidence.
Intellectually dishonest? You're intellectually bankrupt.
easymike 2 years ago
No, it is people like you who want to paint those people are racists because they diagree with President. They would disagree with the President if he were ALL WHITE. He is a liberal with socialist ideas that will destroy our country.
I don't have to give you any evidence. People who want to reserve the use of the term "racist" to themselves alone and rest of us have to be "sensitive". Grow up and get over it. As long as black people play the victim, they will always be the victim.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
Once again you are fixated on the word racist without having a clue what it means CommonSenseJoe . Anyway, I never called anyone a racist.
To say that Obama has "Socialist idea's that will destroy the country" is unsupported wingnut bullshit. I wish he were Liberal or more socialistic.
Honest intelligent disagreement is OK but aberrant wingnut behavior exists.
White people suffer? Idiot! African Americans have been victimized without resolution for years. Some continue to be victimized.
easymike 2 years ago
The President has a bent towards socialism. Look at what he has done and what he intends to do.
I am refering to the video that is intend to give people the impression what this woman said was racist. It was not. That is my point.
You do not address the victimization of some black by victimizing whites.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
It is only your OPINION that her statement was not a racist one. You have made it clear that you don't care what 40million African Americans think or anyone else for that matter and you refuse to give evidence to indicate that it is not a racist statement while history and common sense says it is.
Obama has less of a bent towards socialism than FDR. The rest is wingnut hype.
Let me know when White people become victims of Racism CommonSenseJoe . But first you have to learn what Racism is.
easymike 2 years ago
First, you don't speak for 40 million blacks.
Second, the statement was not used in a racist way or a racist context.
Third, this is Keith's specialty: manufactured outrage.
Finally, racism is not exclusively something that happens to black people. Black people can be just as racist as white people.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
First YOU are the one who discounted 40million African Americans not me.
Second, The statement is racist period. You cannot disprove that
Third Keith does not and did not have to manufacture anything. that is your unsupported OPINION
Finally, no one said racism happens exclusively to African Americans.
You do not speak for the American people and what they are getting tired of.
easymike 2 years ago
"Let me know when White people become victims of Racism CommonSenseJoe ."
Sure looks like you think white people cannot be the victims of racism.
Frankly, I am not concerned with what you think 40 million African Americans think.
Keith does this all the time. Takes something out of context and makes it into something totally different. I speak for myself. I don't see anything racist in what she said. You can call it whatever you want. But first you have to learn what Racism is.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
White people are not victims of Racism, Period. The can be but their oppression is certainly not imminent.
You've made it abundantly clear that how African Americans are affected does not concern you.
That is only your OPINION about Keith. Give me a concrete example.
I know that you speak for yourself and don't see her statement as a racist one. It's meaning changed to suit your argument. Hence your self serving arrogance and ignorance.
easymike 2 years ago
White people are the victims of racism everyday. We just don't whine about it as much as black people do. I don't get all excited when black people jump on their high horse and start screaming racist when a conservative says something they don't like.
Look at everything he says. It is all designed to manufacture outrage at Republicans and specifically conservatives.
The phrase was not used in racist way nor was it intended to be racist. She apologized but that was not enough for some.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
Being offended by bigotry is not the same as being the victim of Racism CommonSenseJoe. Victims of Racism are those who have been oppressed.
LOL, Black people on a high horse is an oxymoron.
Nobody has to manufacture anything about Republicans or the modern day conservative. Their whole platform is based on deceit, fear mongering and fomenting unrest among the opposition. They provide plenty of ammo daily. Keith and others have a hard time keeping up with it. So when Jenkins says ...
easymike 2 years ago
Oh yes, black people get on their high horse. Remember what Jesse Jackson said he wanted to do to OBama?
You dismissed what I said about rappers, but look who is buying all that trash about hoes and bitches. A black man can call a woman a "nappy headed ho" but let a white guy do it and he is a racist.
The best example is how Biden calls OBama "clean and articulate", but that is not racist.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
What do rappers have to do with anything? They don't represent all Black people any more than "rednecks" represent all White people.
There is a difference between being a victim of racism, being offended by bigotry and making a social Faux Pas.
easymike 2 years ago
True, but I don't spend billions to buy their records and emulate the lifestyle of rednecks. It is hypocritical to support such demeaning language and behavior with your hard earned money and then be offended by this woman's remark.
I know the difference between being offend and racism. When a better qualified while man is passed over for a promotion for a poorly quality black man, that is racism.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
One of the reasons I referred to you as self serving
CommonSenseJoe is because you continually conflate your personal tastes and desires with broad social issues. I don't like rap any more than you do. So what? That SOME Black people (and some White people) participate in the rap industry is irrelevant.
Affirmative action was implemented in place of reparations. Some people don't like it because it may discriminate. It is not the same as oppressing a group of people through racism.
easymike 2 years ago
Using race as a determining factor is racism. What King wanted is what I want. Judge people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.
As for reparations, there is no basis for them. You cannot base them on race since the blacks of today are not the ones who were "wrong" in the past. There is no logical basis to assume that their lives back in Africa would have been better than here.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
Using race as a determining factor is discrimination not racism.
That's funny, the Japanese receive reparations. Reparations is still on the table for African Americans. Several universities and congress people are working on it.
easymike 2 years ago
Some believe that have already begun with President OBama. I think we have paid black people enough money to sit on their asses. Time for them to start pulling their own weight in society.
CommonSenseJoe 2 years ago
That is your personal, subjective, self serving BELIEF
CommonSenseJoe. As I pointed out earlier, it has nothing to do with the broad social issue or reality.
easymike 2 years ago
now you got it she was ignorant of the phrase " the great white hope" and it's meaning, that doesn't mean she is racist and that she meant anything racist by it, so my analogy is right she is ignorant not racist , don't mix those up.
cmmnsns4u 2 years ago
NOBODY called her a racist. The use of the phrase was rightfully questioned.
easymike 2 years ago
you must be kidding!!!!!!!!!!! are talking about the same video ? please stick to one argument is she a racist as the clown olbermann claims or is she just ignorant of the meaning of that phrase. besides she apologized already that should be the end of it. he needs to use the same set of standards for the right side and the left
cmmnsns4u 2 years ago
one more thing " NOBODY" was you, when you say she said this racist comment it implies that the person who said it is racist, quit blowing everything out of proportion.
cmmnsns4u 2 years ago
Who called her a racist? Discussing a racist phrase is just that. If YOU want to read more into it be my guest. Create your own reality.
easymike 2 years ago
agree to disagree, look for the truth, not what you make of it.
cmmnsns4u 2 years ago
Kieth Olbermann talking to Maxine Waters. I think I lose iq points just exposing myself to this. These are two of the stupidest fucken people ever to get famous. That was not a Fruedian slip.
rstryker27 2 years ago
Judging by your comments I would say you never had an I.Q. to lose.
TheSuperLiberal 2 years ago
Tell you what , I'll say this woman is a racist if you agree Joe Biden is a racist for once saying Obama was the first "articulate and clean" black man to run for President. And lets not forget that crack he made about needing an Indian accent to go in 7-11. Or maybe the time Hillary Clinton said that Ghandi "ran a gas station in downdown Cleaveland". . Wait! I know. How about Obama himself saying his grandmother was a "typical white person"? Is Ms. Waters a "typical black person"?
rstryker27 2 years ago
Rep. Waters merely indicated that it was possibly a Freudian slip. She was being gracious.
But evidently you would rather it be seen for what it is, a blatantly racist statement.
TheSuperLiberal has you IQ pegged correctly.
easymike 2 years ago
I don't remember the same standard being applied to Obama when just a few days ( not seven monthes) after Sarah Palin made a lipstick joke he brought out the old "lipstick on a pig" line. Which is it? Do old expressions mean what they mean or what is political at the time.
rstryker27 2 years ago
Lipstick on a pig is not a racist statement. The great white hope has always had racist meaning. I can't believe anyone would defend this woman for making such a clearly racist statement. If anyone doesn't think its a racist statement then they are a racist themselves.
