I actually happen to have heard him talking about it in an interview. None of them had ever heard the song before, they purposefully chose a song that they had never heard so that they could experiment with doing a pseudo cover in which they take lyrics they like and write an entirely different song using it. So you are correct, it doesn't sound like the original. But you are wrong, they didn't miss the point. It was on purpose.
