Actually, this song follows the story of Faust almost verbatim at times. Which I guess would make it have some religious ties in some ways. I can't imagine that its just a coincidence that it follows the story so closely, so it had to be on purpose. It seems like he took the legend of Faust and put his own spin on it and tied it to his personal experiences.
"Why are we stuck in this pantomime fearing a god who died?
One who would not deny lovers?"
That right there shows that this song is not anti-god, but rather about mental illness and possibly religious fanaticism. When its talking about destroying her God, I think he means destroying the source of her obsession/illness.
i think the idea that a god who'd allow such pain in an existence doesn't need praise. they are making a point about the fact that maybe we are wrong and the fact people do this and kill there babies for all reasons. maybe god doesn't exist or does. but to worship him is a dumb idea for some.
@trancelover96 Life is a beautiful thing, but the people in it are twisted. He's singing about his wife killing their child and then killing herself, I don't see how you can exactly make that cheerful.
If we can look beyond all the arguments that are going on here, this song did so much for the band, and to not be able to appreciate what a piece of art it is would be a sin. It's so much more than a simple "metal song" It's fucking art. The vocals, the composition, the breakdown, the melody and the drums. Seriously. If all you can look at with this song its metal factor, you're a fucking moron. This is so much more than that.

Wow some of you children actually think this band believes what it sings about. I guess that thought never occurred. That's like all you idiots thinking Avenged 7X is an Anti-god band. There is a cross on the tombstone in the video for Seize the Day. IF they were really anti-god like some of you think they would not have the cross which is SO offensive. @fbrdj yes there are a good amount of their songs that have the ideas of heaven and hell in it, but that in no way means that they have christian ideals or beliefs. @fbrdj Christian in imagery, yes, but they aren't a Christian band, and no one in the band is a complete practicing Christian. Not trying to say that you're wrong, but its not like they're trying to put the 'word of God' out there lol. @fbrdj By the sounds of it.. It sounds like it is actually Post-Partum Psychoses.. Which would afflict the mother after birth causing her to "hear the voice of Jesus"... Of course everyone loves to bash organized religion by using people that have mental illness... I find it hillarous... If I spelled anything wrong.. My bad.
@NinjaSkittlez its about that bitch who fuckin drowned her kids a while back i dont remember where it was but she said that she heard the voice of jesus tellin her to do it

This is just another reason why religion shouldn't exist. Yeah it comforts the old people, but just look how many people have claimed what they did was for their god. So many people died because of religion.

@LetsRevolt1 actually 9/11 had a major deal with religion buddy, it was mainly religion and culterization. it was one because of a thing known as westernization. which is the spreading of culture from the americas. and those guys didnt want that, and it included religion, ways of life, etc etc.
This is the first Youtube page I've come to with an actual debate (NOT an adolescent pissing contest). Just goes to show you that most music these days is almost worthless if this is the only song that gives people reason to discuss things maturely, & not call ANYONE a 'fag'.
Less than eloquent wording, but actually a fairly accurate assessment.
In a non-religiously oriented group, hearing any voice is something you would seek treatment for. The fact that she was religious and attributed it to some type of divine instruction really was likely no more than an outlet. If she had said the voice was "Elvis" or "Santa", she would have been taken to a physiologist. We are sadly too accepting of people 'hearing voices' if they hide it in faith.
@Digimaul I know this is old, but in my opinion, it doesn't matter whether or not she was an Atheist or not, if you heard a soothing voice in your head, telling everything was alright, and that everything you hear about Christianity was true, some might seek medical help, and some would see it as a sign that their life is special and follow the voice. Also in my opinion, I think religion is used incorrectly nowadays, religion is supposed to give you an answer, not a way, of life.
That's exactly my point though, there shouldn't be any situation where 'hearing voices' or other symptoms of psychosis is something which is ignored or encouraged. The metaphorical "I hear the voice of god" which is literally meant as "I feel like I should do good things" is a good thing... that's a dramatized version of a conscious and we all have that. However, anyone who means that in the literal sense needs treatment as it is a very real sign of mental instability.
@Digimaul True, but if they're at the state where they hear voices, then there might not be enough time to get help. I for one have never heard any voices in my head, but I consider that a voice sounds surprisingly knowing, and whatever it says makes sense at the time, so there isn't anything weird or unhealthy about the voice to the person it's talking to, making them want to do what it says.
How could anyone NOT like this song? Its so sad.. I mean.. Its about a mother who claims Jesus told her to kill her baby.. Sure, but... Alot of religious nuts do shit like this on a daily basis, yet they want to dis-enguine them and say they were "Possessed by the Devil". It isn't "the devil", people. Its what religion drives people to do.
HAAAAAAA! Are you kidding? Religion is probably one of the largest driving forces of killing, corruption, and murder throughout history. Crusades, Cleansing, Sects, Segregation. While there are minimal community benefits, overall it DOES drive people to do things unspeakable. 9/11? Ring a bell? Jihad? Ring any bells?
I would no more directly attribute a person's religion causing them to be violent than I would blame atheism for every murder not committed in the name of a deity. Trying to lay a blanket claim about all members of a group based on the actions of a few doesn't help either "Side" to understand the problems source.
Don't misunderstand, I'm an atheist myself. I'm simply saying you need to direct your outrage at the source. Attacking groups simply makes individuals defensive.
@Digimaul I feel that laying a "blanket claim" is an acceptable statement. Im not saying all religious members kill people because of their beliefs. I just feel that when it comes to a radical standpoint, which many sects of a religion like Islam are turning to, it leads to nothing good. Instead it only promotes violence, hate, and promotes an unthinking majority that follow the guidelines of an outdated book.
P.S. Thank you for a legit response. Not just a Fuck off or something youtube like
The vast majority, and I mean well over 99.9%, of people are not driven to any hostile actions by their faith. If it was a direct relation you would expect a higher ratio. The source issue is that there is a minority of people in leadership positions who take advantage of people who are desperate for meaning.
To put it another way, if an atheist were worked up and told religion was terrible for years, and killed someone, the problem isn't that he was an atheist.
Terrible lack of space in these, it's like debating on twitter...
Anyway, in that situation, if someone came off saying "Typical atheist behavior" wouldn't that be totally skipping over the source of the issue, and simply causing an argument between two people who for all purposes SHOULD be agreeing on the problem?
Likewise, the issues which cause terror attacks, or religious hate crimes, are not addressed by saying "That's just how they are". Causes must be addressed.
Untreated and re-enforced madness does. In the case of this song, the woman being discussed was obviously 'crazy', but it was masked behind her faith. You see real life cases (spanked to death for god case recently, children killed in exorcisms, J-Witnesses refusing blood for kids), where actions which would have been warning signs to a non-religious person were ignored as it being part of their faith and accepted.
There is more to it of course, but I'm out of space. :)
To everyone that keeps replying to my month old comment, I was on my iPod, I just recently learned it doesn't show the "Related videos" text box. I'm not a huge idiot, I just had new unexplored technology. I know what "Featured" means. I'm not a simpleton, i assure you.
Just gonna say that there are multiple featured videos out there, so your comment still stands - it's still pretty weird that they had the Gummy Bear video be the featured one for this video. Usually they try to make them relate to each other at least a little . . . 0_0
@SebastianandCiel I know, and when I got on my laptop and look at it, it was on "Suggested videos" Why? Also, WHY IS THE GUMMY BEAR SONG FEATURED IN THE FIRST PLACE?!
It always gives me chills when he says hes horrified at what she was going to do as she walks into their childs room...and then shivers as she strangles it...but it's one of my favorite songs nevertheless, and inspired me to start writing a book...HURT FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He thinks he is damned and of her god told her to kill her children then he wants to destroy that god and burn with her... this was a real situation... Super crazy
it's kind of hard to tell what this song means. in 1 way it sound like it supports gay rights, and in another way, it sounds like it's about hating religion 0.o
Does anyone (Religious or not) now what the singer was talking about? Cause if you did you'd realize it wasn't all about religion, more of the singers experience with death, and "God's" will... That's it, this isn't a page for arguing... Just a page for talking about music.
Wow this is really uplifting.... NOT! If it sounds worldly, the world will like it. Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind....That's in the book of Romans. There is good news, it is refered as the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Read it & you won't have to be depressed & listen to this kind of music.
@tyrannynotever It's what the music industry promotes. Great music with depressing, hateful lyrics. They hate you, if you love God, & would rather believe in anything but that. I've heard all about aliens, devils, other dimensions, a few other worldly gods, and that we, ourselves are the gods, but only one of those can be true.
@tyrannynotever You Sir, You Believe In God. Cool, Do Not Come In Here Posting Your HATRED Towards The Music. That's Part Of Religion Right? Acceptance? I Have Read It And Even Besides Revelations It Is More Depressing Then This. Depressing In The Fact That So Many People Could Follow So Blindly. Now I Am Not One Who Is Against Religion, But People Like You Piss Me Off. It Is Because People Like You Create The Elitism. Fuck Off.
@kihana12 Because it's youtube's featured video? ...so it will be at the top of every related video' list until it's replaced? Seems like a pretty obvious answer there bud
this song makes think soooo much....i miscarried, and it is my fault... me and my ex loved this song....even while i was pregnant ...idk this song means alot to mee
@farewellmisery This song is actually about him hating a woman who he had a child with. She found religion and thought the baby didn't belong in this world because they weren't married so she kills it. So, not a religious song at all. And definitely not a religious band.
@CrypticAngel92 goodbye to the machine is a great album :) im lookin for their other ones though. because they are way better. but goodbye to the machine is still amazing :) all of hurt's songs are amazing. oh and their song "alone with the sea" is their best song by far :)
i go to theodore high school and its all about screamo music or country and here i am listening to hurt and no one has a clue who in the hell they are but if they were to listen to them they would love them. One of the greatest bands of all time in my opinion
just to clarify to those who dont know or cant understand, this song is about the a woman who blindly follows religion and kills her child because "Jesus told her to"
Actually, this song follows the story of Faust almost verbatim at times. Which I guess would make it have some religious ties in some ways. I can't imagine that its just a coincidence that it follows the story so closely, so it had to be on purpose.
Not just a Fuck off or something youtube like
00300odyssey 5 months ago
@00300odyssey
Digimaul 5 months ago
@00300odyssey

@shaunamilner

I'm not a simpleton, i assure you.
kihana12 6 months ago
@kihana12
Just gonna say that there are multiple featured videos out there, so your comment still stands - it's still pretty weird that they had the Gummy Bear video be the featured one for this video. Usually they try to make them relate to each other at least a little . . . 0_0
SebastianandCiel 6 months ago
@SebastianandCiel I know, and when I got on my laptop and look at it, it was on "Suggested videos" Why? Also, WHY IS THE GUMMY BEAR SONG FEATURED IN THE FIRST PLACE?!

He thinks he is damned and of her god told her to kill her children then he wants to destroy that god and burn with her... this was a real situation... Super crazy

This song is about a woman who killed her kids and said god told her to.... Untill your rapture falls to pieces...

it's kind of hard to tell what this song means. in 1 way it sound like it supports gay rights, and in another way, it sounds like it's about hating religion 0.o

Read it & you won't have to be depressed & listen to this kind of music.
tyrannynotever 9 months ago
@tyrannynotever It's what the music industry promotes. Great music with depressing, hateful lyrics. They hate you, if you love God, & would rather believe in anything but that. I've heard all about aliens, devils, other dimensions, a few other worldly gods, and that we, ourselves are the gods, but only one of those can be true.
God is Love, & Jesus saves. That is good news.

RageAgainstRustyCage 9 months ago
@tyrannynotever You Sir, You Believe In God. Cool, Do Not Come In Here Posting Your HATRED Towards The Music. That's Part Of Religion Right? Acceptance? I Have Read It And Even Besides Revelations It Is More Depressing Then This. Depressing In The Fact That So Many People Could Follow So Blindly. Now I Am Not One Who Is Against Religion, But People Like You Piss Me Off. It Is Because People Like You Create The Elitism. Fuck Off.

@kihana12 that's called a feature video it means they have by request and payment got it in the featured video section for a certain amount of time

@kihana12 Because it's youtube's featured video? ...so it will be at the top of every related video' list until it's replaced? Seems like a pretty obvious answer there bud

is this a christian rock band?
farewellmisery 10 months ago
@farewellmisery No , I dont think so.
MrChristophe156 10 months ago
@farewellmisery This song is actually about him hating a woman who he had a child with. She found religion and thought the baby didn't belong in this world because they weren't married so she kills it. So, not a religious song at all. And definitely not a religious band.
