but the thing im wondering is , would he have to salute and take orders from a second lieutenant as he is still only a sergeant major and a lieutenant , even though very junior , is still an officer and his superior?
No, he would not have to take orders from a 2LT. He is the SMA. He works directly for the Chief of Staff, in which both work for the Pentagon. He DOES however, have to salute that 2LT as he "Technically" outranks the SMA. But the SMA is the SMA. A 2LT better be grateful he's even in the presence of the SMA and better hold a mutual respect for him or he would get crushed before his career started. That's a grey area ? when you're talking about those two particular levels.

I did WLC at CP Jackson. I hated all 30 days of that crap hole. Double time and March every where you go. Only good thing about it was the DFAC!
