You protect your back by taking air into your belly and pushing your abs out. Pulling your gut in accomplishes the same goal (increased intra-abdominal pressure) but does it to such a reduced extent that it's barely worth doing at all.

General Hint for Viewers: Do not do this exercise. If you want an accessory exercise for the posterior chain (glute/ham/low back), do an actual hyperextension (same thing, but going down as far as possible and coming up to stop at, not past, parallel).
