I think that trying to analyze the lyrics of this song in strict context, is one of the worst cases of misintepreting a song or a poem. He is being allegoric. Of course the story is fiction.
The story-line as presented is, of course, totally inaccurate. Richard the Lionheart (3rd Crusade) dis not attack Jerusalem due to inadequate manpower and supply chain. He knew if he took the city he would be unable to hold it. A smart move by a smart commander.

i live in that part of the world and iv studied history 2 and i know that the crusaders and salah eldien were totaly animals anyways salah ildien was a killer and kinda like an animal....anyways lets cheer up and fuck politics and history can u play lebanese night for chris de burgh ???
I am not Arab! But I know history and if you read some more sources you will find out how the Crusaders invade Jerusalem and how they treated the people there.Saladin also is an invador no doubt. But for sure he was not as Chrid de Burgh describes.
But Lebanese night, I have heard it and also the part with Elissa, I like but I will check if I can play it!

Actually he calls the Muslims as unbelievers in God and describe Salladin tottally different from what is even mentioend in western historian sources. Making a song like this I believe needs a lot of studies so not to hurt any body's feelings and to tell the truth based on available sources to every one.

Regarding the history is the vision of the Salladin, though I am not arab and not a good muslim at the same time, but because I study history very much, I know that Salladin was not as Chris is describing and of course again they defeated the christians!
