But the songs came through and the Beauty Stab album was excellent, even though it was less successful. And they did it again by changing for Zillionaire. I still love ABC and always will.

I enjoyed that indeed, thank you (and youtube) for making things like this visible. Beauty Stab is a great album and a pleasant supruse for me after I descovered ABC via The Lexicon of Love.
Those were the best years of pop music in the UK, they are the songs you remember because they mean something, not like the songs and music of nowadays.
One of the most heartfelt and beautiful songs I've heard. I was watching the"Made In Sheffield" DVD the other day, there was an interview with Stephen Stapleton,he struck me as one of the most honest and down to earth UK pop stars of the early 80s along with the lads from China Crisis.
You can really get the "Art of Noise" influence on this track. I thought this group was brillaint and the sax play was unrecognized. These guys weren't big in NA but I heard them when I was visiting with a friend in Oxford Poly in the 80s en route to Africa.
I must have been one of the chosen few whom actually had this album " Beauty Stab". It was Great to bad most of the world never heard of it. ABC were ahead of their time.
cheesiest video ever, that being said, fantastic song. Melodic and well crafted. First heard this song while stationed in Germany, all my punk friends laughed at me for it.....But they went out and bought it also
ABC paid a heavy price for their creative bravery. The obvious thing to do was to record The Lexicon of love Pt II. That was exactly what fans and critics alike wanted and expected. Fortunately for us, ABC did the exact opposite. Beauty stab was a radical departure. This was a time when bands like ABC, Soft Cell and Talk Talk, were willing to risk commercial suicide, by being true to themselves. Time has vindicated all three.
you know you roll up the windows at a red light but got to listen to this stuff loud. Oh ghosh I love this stuff. Vid is way beyond cheesy but the medium was quite young... yeah so were we......
This a beautiful song -prob the best they ever recorded.Notice how toward the end it starts to sound very similar to "Under Pressure".Martin Fry was an above average Bowie clone at the time,so it probably isn't such a surprise.
@abagail4me What you have to realise is that just about everyone of a certain age and just about everyone of any note, musically, at that time was influenced by Bowie. Good spot though, I'd never noticed the similarity before.
I was practically a social outcast in high school for loving these guys. It was about Korn, DMX, or Backstreet Boys if you wanted to be cool. But I didn't give a shit about any of those rubbish acts. I was into ABC!!!!
@3DPeter Yes, the latter. I went to high school in the late 90's, and that was when pop music just began to suck. So I found solace with the great music from the early 80's that I loved in my younger years.
People that go against the current are always deemed unworthy by the rest. Rest assured that the majority aren't necessarily the vanguard of taste, nor of intellect. Neither are they as hip or as savvy as they may think themselves to be.
I'd rather live in relative obscurity than give in the whims of the mass-market driven buffoons, that wouldn't know quality if it hit straight between-the-eyes!
@Seany06 Um, no.....they're rubbish in comparison to the brilliance of ABC. Like, who's even listening to those acts anymore these days outside their fanbase?
@Seany06 Um...no, you're sadly mistaken. My musical tastes are very diverse ranging from ABC to Prince to Otis Redding to Led Zeppelin to Bob Marley to OutKast to Thelonious Monk to System of a Down to Beethoven and so forth. Those names I mentioned before are names that I don't consider to be good music. Just because they were popular doesn't mean they'll stand the test of time. I'm sorry, but that's how I feel.
@therealsoulproduct and you think crap like system of a down will last.................................not likely, its music of its crappy nu metal time.
@rwk1983 Don't hate on System, man, especially if you haven't given them a listen. They're a classic Metal group with substance and I'm not even the biggest Metal fan.
Just been listening to Beauty Stab..what a seriously underrated album and a bit of a lost gem (like most of ABC's work since Lexicon)..worth buying if you've never heard it.
I can remember being on a beach in St Malo, Brittany, back in the early 80's, I was with a mate, and we were gonna swim out to these rock's, and I had visions of us drowning or being stranded, and this tune was playing through my mind. Doesn't exactly give you confidence does it, and yes we bottled it.!
Thanks for this..the song was totally ignored after 'That Was Then..' and so no wonder the video is rare...but it really is a wonderful track. Thanks.
Reminds me of the old pirate(illegal underground) radio station Sunshine 299 that broadcast from a run down farmhouse near Ludlow, England in the mid 1980s. This song was ignored by Radio 1 and other English commercial radio stations, but was enthusiastically championed by Sunshine to its audience.
Interesting that you mention Sunshine radio. I had forgotten about that. I lived in Ludlow during that period and am now rediscovering a lot of this mid 80s stuff. Fiction Factory, Feels like heaven is another. I was a big fan also of Scritti Politti. Saw them play in London last Christmas. Still producing great sounds. Cheers.
Saw them live in June 2006 in NYC what a great live band. Martin and David Palmer were the only original members. They put on a great show, I love hearing Be Near Me LIVE.
By default or design, a great song and a great album. This band's first two albums were treasures in my opinion and were wasted on much of the world. Everyone knows "Look of Love", and many "Poison Arrow", but most every song on Beauty Stab and Lexicon of Love were near perfect. Moreover, they spoke to people who longed for more from life and love. More beauty, more joy and, sadly, more tears. SpurrierTwo, just stop cold turkey and don't dwell on misspent youth or you'll misspend adulthood too.
Beauty Stab is a very underrated album IMO. It can proudly stand shoulder to shoulder (dreadful phrase) with Lexicon Of Love as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for posting the vid.
100% agree beauty stab showed the versatility of Martin Fry and ABC they moved with the times and experimented with music and didnt plough the same old furrow. They were a great band!
Thank you so much for posting this! Midlife crisis dude here---drinking the vodka---42 here---damn, does midlife crisis hit good looking people much harder--especially, when they are single?? THANKS AGAIN--SOS is my theme and I adore my ABC! THANKS THANKS THANKS! This song sooooooooooo captures the zenith of my youth and my life theme now--SOS! :)
Thank you so much for posting this video.. I had never seen it, but I had the album way back when. Who would have guessed? I feel sixteen again--for the two minutes during the song... Thank you.
Yes, Whoever posted this is brilliant... This was truly the BEST ABC album by far, Beauty Stab.. SO good, and I wish they would have done more videos from this one. Anyone know if there's a HEY CITIZEN! Video?? I would love to see that as well..
Martin Fry was so underated as a singer. Such talent to be so overlooked by the pop pirahnas of today, these pop singers today exploiting themselves in the tabloids.
Despite ABC enjoying massive success in 1982 with 3 top 10 hits, it seemed that when they emerged in late 1983 with a different style with 'That Was Then' which did make the UK top 20, it seemed that their original fans had deserted them.
This was a classic ABC song that only just crept into the top 40 in early 1984 reaching only no. 39. Top 10 hits continue to elude them when they re-emerged in 1987 with 'When Smoky Sings' peaked at no. 11 in June that year.
Even I loved Lexicon I was a great supporter of STAB too,... It was the consequent evolution of sound .. Martyn, ur a great songwriter, thank u from Germany!
Well, it seems this song reminds deep feelings to many people... it also hapens to me. But it tuned out all right, so I have a special care for this song. The end is very nice...it seems a chorus of hope!
one cool million for one cool caress.... what great lyrics reminds me when i would have paid a million for a caress cos 1st love costs and abc remind me of that ... thanks guys love the memories ... u still rock

Cheers.

One for my all time Top 10, alongside Marvin Gaye, The Associates, Scott Walker and Evelyn Champagne King!

After The Lexicon Of Love anything was going to be a disappointment but Beauty Stab sounds better with every year that goes by.
By far the best track on the album.
