This video-song/song was never heard on UK radio in the 80s or 90s. Maybe because it has a subversive quality to it. We are all being force-fed muck on multi-channel tv and on the internet. Even tv commercials are seen as entertainment.

This video-song, however, parodies the muck we get. Just like Abigail's Party (1977 movie), and certain other books and movies. Artists who parody mass entertainment are regarded with suspicion by the "powerful classes" who provide it and make money from it.

It is a great video-song. It is parody before it is even a pop song. An original pop video and an original form of parody. In 1973 in the UK there were only 3 tv channels, and home video-recorders did not come till about '79. So kids of '73 may have only seen this video-song once in the '70s when it came on Top of the Pops. Maybe pop was worth looking into in those days because the entry channnels were few. You had to work harder and more creatively to make an impact. Compare Blondie with Gaga.

This song, and the video-song in particular, parodies to perfection the self-important, self-obsessed youth of today with all their wretched commentary on-line. Bowie's turquoise suit (where is it now?) and tropical bird-look, and knowingly complicit lyrics adds to the idea that this video-song is first and foremost an art-work in parody. 40 yrs ahead of time.
