true. but id take having a mouth like a sailor who treats ppl decently over being a well-spoken bigot any day of the week. and no, im not insinuating that you're a well-spoken bigot.
I am a mother and my family is multi-racial. While it is in a totally different context, I also experience the frustrating ignorance addressed in this vid. Ever heard the phrase "funny because it is true"? That is why I love this video - because this is how that type of ignorance makes me feel.
and your SEXUALITY , wat u do in the bedroom, is frankly no one's freaking business. which is why wat Maine just did pisses me da f**k off because who the f*** r they to tell people who they cant spend the rest of their lives with?!!! no one!!!
Dan, ur a freaking moron. Being gay is something that is chosen in most cases, while, as someone wisely stated above u cannot "choose" to be a Jew of Color--u r simply born that way, there is nothing that we can do.
you can CHOOSE to NOT be gay, hell, you can even choose to be IN THE CLOSET. but when we walk into a shul, there is no closet to shield our physical features, there is NO where and NO way to hide. we are seen and there is nothing we can do. being gay, also, is a SEXUALITY
danfruma--BITE ME. seriously dude, u missed the whole point of this video. u really did. take ur bitter pill to another place that isnt hear cause OBVIOUSLY u dont get it....bye!!

Lame...there are almost no black Jews because Judaism is a race more than a religion... The Jews don't want to convert other but to have 20 kids as a way to "spread" Judaism.
As a Gay Jew with JOC relatives, I really want to be supportive of this. We are all called out at some point or points in our lives and questioned about or told to justify or defend our Jewishness.
Still, the implicit threat of violence at the end, IMHO, negates the humorous approach in the beginning. Anger is a valid emotion. But there are other ways to express anger without resorting to violence. The ending says to me, "You screw up, and I'll hit you." Is that really the best you can do?
thats EXACTLY my point.despite all the sources that speak against treating fellow jews, converts and just plain PEOPLE poorly...despite the dozens of conferences held to discuss the social issues of color in judaism...why is it that once the threat of violence is introduced and that, yes, this constant insensitivity evokes feeling of anger...why is it that NOW, all of a sudden, ppl seem to get the point? why does it TAKE the implicit threat of violence?
If someone physically attacks you, by all means respond physically. At the very least, defend yourself if youre able. But hurtful words uttered out of ignorance require a different response.
Do a search for "how to tell people they sound racist" on YouTube and watch this guy's short video.
He differentiates between what you do and what you are.
I mean, come on. You've seen "Fiddler," right? "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth just leaves everybody blind and toothless." Discuss.
Then do a search for "Asher Roth and the Racial Crossroads" and watch that one, too. I don't even know who Asher Roth is, but I did go to Rutgers...and this guy has really thought about this stuff on a level I've never seen before.
What does a "part jewish" crappy ass rapper have to do with a Black Jewish Youtube Video? Sighs...don't worry...I am not expecting you to understand...it's a "Black Jewish Thing". Also, what does you being gay have anything to do with any of this?
Funny: I AM expecting you to to understand. I am expecting that if you're engaging in a conversation (as opposed to just telling people how they should be and what they should do), that you'd at least try to understand how this is all connected. How someone who's been discriminated against because of who he is might understand another who's been through the same experience, even if the motivation behind that discrimination comes from a slightly different place.
well then. are you interested in having a "conversation" about gaybashing or "telling" ppl not to do it? having a "conversation" about allowing gay marriage or "telling" ppl you have that right? having a "conversation" with ppl about not discriminating against you or "telling" them that ur a human just like they are. im not particularly interested in ludicrous conversations when the solution is patently clear.
Slightly different place? Dude, there is a big difference between being born a race and being discriminated against and having a lifestyle that is against the laws and being discriminated against. Furthermore, I realize that for some homosexuality can be something you are born with. But, last time I checked, you can choose to live a straight lifestyle (not that you should have to). We can't choose to be "Not Of Color". So, Cry Me A River.
Oh, Evil1. When you look back at this time ten or twenty years from now--after you've come out and you're lounging on the lanai with your boyfriend--remember what it was like when you took your limited and sheltered view and understanding of the world, politics, religion, truth, race, sexuality, and power, and tried to use it to feel superior to another human being.
When you find yourself justifying your self-hatred and other-hatred with "common sense," take a break.
Oh Dan...sad sad dan. Maybe in your mind everyone who doesn't agree that the Plight of Blacks and or Black Jews is the same as those Gays who struggle for Civil Rights are somehow Homophobes or are Closet Homosexuals. But, in the real world it isn't that way. I have Gay Friends and I support Gay rights. However, I will not even remotely believe that your struggle for "Respect in Judaism" is anywhere near the same as ours. So, You can take those weak ideals somewhere else.
You're right. It's not the same. Some "mainstream" American Jews look at Jews of Color and declare that they are not, can not be, part of the Jewish community. Gays never experience that. People of Color have to deal with complete strangers making assumptions about who they are and how they will act. Again, not Gay people. As for hiding? Gays are great at that! It's so cool that I can just sit there and watch my rights being voted away because, if you can't see us, we don't really matter. Right?
But guess what, Evil1. It was never my intention to play "Who's more oppressed?" Nobody wins. It just further divides us into "us" and "them." As for why you should care about the oppression of others? It's all connected. Go study your history. Gay folks are being treated to "separate but equal" and now, apartheid. There's a separate set of laws that just applies to us in the majority of the states.
Study my history? Hmmm...you mean Gay slavery? Or the Gay Jim Crow Laws? Or the "No Gays Allowed" places? Or the "Gay Lynchings"? Or the "Straight Only Waterfountains"? I could go on and on, but I hope you are intelligent enough to get my point. Everything in Civil Rights struggles have a few similarities. However, as their may be few, they are still not the same. Not to mention, you being gay has nothing to do with this video.
This is not about "People of Color" this is about Jews of Color and Judaism. So, as I believe you should get the same rights as everyone else, that has nothing to do with you Jews of Color being treated as less than Jewish or not Jewish at all. Being Gay in a Jewish Community is difficult because the Torah says what you do is wrong. I must have missed the part that said "Jews of Color are forbidden". Stop being a bitch, face it, this has nothing to do with you.
Actually, the Torah doesn't say homosexuality is forbidden. תועבה is usually translated as "abhorrent." And it mentions men only; guess they couldn't conceive (disapprove?) of lesbianism. The Torah also tells you how to treat your slaves and how many shekels an oxen is worth. So there's that.
Anyway, I think our topical diversion has run its course.
Actually it's the "Anal" that is forbidden and I believe they push "Do not do as the Egyptians do" in regards to Lesbianism. In regards to "Slaves" it is often elaborated that it is referencing employees. And I find it funny that you see this as a "Diversion". This is about JOCs not Homosexuals. Go make your own funny video.
In Addition...anyone in this thread who knows me (which are most) know that I am far from "Gay-Bashing" and far from the "Sheltered Type". So, I will request that you stop acting like a little bitch and actually realize that 1. just becomes someone doesn't agree with you does not make them a self hating closet case or a sheltered person. 2. Speaking of closet cases you can hide the fact that you are Gay, we can't hide Black and 3. You aren't making a very good argument as to why we should care
OH...and it's not Asher Roth you're going for if you search for "Asher Roth and the Racial Crossroads." It's Jay Smooth, who actually has something intelligent to say.
Dismissing me by saying "I am not expecting you to understand...it's a "Black Jewish Thing"" shuts down the conversation. That's all I'm saying. But somehow we got off the original topic, which is that this video encourages and promotes violence as a response to being dismissed. I think that's wrong.

You aren't gonna get the message across from me if you use profanity. Profanity has absolutely NO PLACE in Judaism. It is a bad middah (character)!

how sad that the discussion went into gay rights. how annoying that things are getting out of topic.
racism is disgusting and there is no excuse for it. all i can say - sorry for bad experiences.
there are rude and stupid people. not sure if slapping works, but thank you for speaking out - btw, i am "white" if there is such a thing for Jew.
