  • I can't believe they canceled JIMO! WTF? If we would stop funding our money towards war and religion, we could!

  • @KarbineKyle - Religion? WTF are you talking about you idiot. Try war, Wall Street and bank bail outs. Theres the wste of money. Wheres the funding coming from in religion you fucking moron?

  • @HardRokMiner Lemme guess, you are religious?

  • Cancelled! :(

  • Don't worry, China will likely do something similar and pioneer the technology. Obama wants the United States to lack both vision and leadership in space. Ditto :(

  • Weren't they planing on nuking europa to melt the ice and expose the ocean like they did with Deep Impact? Or was just a I-want-to-do-this-but-I-is-environmental-imoral?

  • @T0B0KKE No, they never were. The plan was to have a sort of Torpedo, containing a probe. The tip of that "torprobe" would be heated by some nuclear material decaying, and releasing heat in the process. The Voyager probes are powered by a similar process.

  • @Helge129 Thermoelectric effect.

  • Probably would have been a very expensive probe, wouldn't it ? Oh well, I'm certain they'll send a probe to the Gallilean moons one day... Sooner or later... There's still so much to explore in the Solar System.

  • They cancelled this program I think,

  • acctually its 64

  • wow... cool!!

  • jupiter has 100+ satellites

  • Uhh, yeah; I know, good for you!

  • @pyzrm19 probably

  • It's a shame JIMO was canceled the technology developed for this mission is more important then Orion,Ares, and Artemis .

Why do I say that well private companies can easily develop equivalents to those things of a fraction of the cost but only NASA can fund research on space nuclear power and very advanced concepts like NEP propulsion.

  • I agree. This would have been a huge step forward in space exploration. Now we're going to have to wait for ages until we can know for sure if there's life on Europa or not.

Most of us probably won't live to see that day anymore. It really is a crying shame.

  • Well, who knows. Nasa may still surprise, I promise you that.

  • the technology was inspired by starwars.... but its shame that it was cancelled

  • NASA proposed another mission regarding Europa, though I'm not sure that the probes will actually go into the moon's surface.

  • Humm, life on other planets, that would prove evolution, no god, no reason to wage war, piece, nobody makes money on tanks & bombs, fat cats wouldn't be so fat. Humm, I wonder why the JIMO mission lost funding & was cancelled?

  • how?

  • Why would evolution prove that there is no God? The Catholic church believes in evolution.

  • no it only accepts it as a possibility

  • Of course they accept it as a possibility.. they don't want to be left in the cold when life is found. They still need to be around to fill up the collection plates.

  • Sczi plug, but what the heck does this have to do with Europa exploration?

  • @TheMandoor:

-Evolution is already considered a fact by science.

It's just that some people don't want to accept it, or they remain ignorant about the evidence.

-Life on other planets is not a proof against god (which, anyway?), but against specific claims in scriptures of particular religions.

-Life in a moon of Saturn hardly would do anything at all. It would be meaningful and deeply changing for a lot, but there are conflicts with or without religion.

    -See "Europa Jupiter System Mission".

  • You're glib. (lol)

  • There is no life on Europa anyways.

  • JIMO CANCELLLED... sorry :(

  • Yes, it is very... annoying that JIMO was canceled, but that is only because the mission lost funding. In fact, Europa is one of the biggest concerns to NASA right now; it's just that their TOP priority is to get another human in space.

  • I hope so too.

  • I hope that this, or something like it, becomes a reality. Space exploration is awesome, especially one that might actually find some sort of life.
