Cell phone idiots with their texting and all cause far more accidents than cigarettes. Probably more than alcohol. You don't smoke? Yipee for you. Smoking didn't kill Zappa...Crappy doctors did.
@iouakick When a man in his 40's complains about urinary problems, the first thing to be checked should be the prostate. What were they checking? His ears?
This is a little silly. I like Zappa and all, but to say that people do drugs people they aren't happy with who they are is stupid. Sure some people do, a lot of people probably, but some people just do it because they want to have fun and that's how they have fun. Nothing wrong with that. Well all do something to have fun. Throw a ball, eat a cake, play guitar, or do some coke. Are people who eat cake, throw balls, and play guitar not happy with themselves either?
Kooj + Mattie - it was prostate cancer. As far as I know, it isn't clear whether or not smoking increases the risk of cancer of the prostate, but it does appear to worsen prognosis if you have the disease already. Main point, overriding all that - smoking like a Frank is a really, really bad idea. No guarantee that it'll screw you with cardiovascular disease, emphysema or lung cancer (among other things), but a horribly high probability that it will.
How cool was smoking yourself to death Frank? Love your music but let's not act holier than thou. You merely chose slow capitulation over (possible) instant suicide.
@estvan56 , tell that to the gal I tried to kiss last weekend that tasted like an old cig butt. NASTY!! Or the many who have had car accidents cause they were to busy fing around with a cancer stick.
@71ffneun I'm well aware of the aspects of addiction. Just because I'm eighteen years old doesn't mean I can't comprehend the concept of addiction. Using cocaine or any other psychoactive substance over a peroid of time is "psychological addiction." Even if the individual doesn'y continuously use, they can still be classified as addicted.
It might have been rather unintelligible to compare cocaine to tobacco, but honestly, I can't even remember making that statement and I can't remember what...
@holmeed You used cocaine for years and years, and you never got "hooked." Not getting "hooked" is only using cocaine on one of a few occasions. Using it consecutively during a span of mutliple years, is addiction. Cigarettes and cocaine are equally dangerous. Frank didn't use drugs, because he didn't wan't to alter his awareness or infringe his freedom. Out of all drugs, cocaine is one of the most destructive and susceptible to persacution.
@holmeed I'll agree with that. Nicotine is addictive, but to me cigarettes are completely undesireable, not to mention the illnesses you can get from smoking mass produced tobacco.
@eganbarry And you're likening light-headedness, mild relaxation and suppression of appetite to the effects of cocaine? What an argument - yeah, you win.
@aslowdiver It was mostly environmental.Smoking 3 packs a day, drinking 12 cups of coffee a day, staying up late, sleeping very ;little, touring continuously year after year, recording and writing music continuously day after day and poor eating habits on the road and a dislike for vegetables, all contributed to his cancer and early death. His father, mother and siblings all lived longer.
The point is, you are missing the point because I have stated my point very clearly that the point is this. You are pointing the blame point-blank at the underlying point of which I am trying to point out. Let me cover all the points here, first of all I made it a point to make the point of my pencil the focal point in a pointless point system, however the points A and X are too pointy.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Too bad Frank was a terminal hypocrite. An unrepentent nicotine addict, he once referred to tobacco as "my favourite vegetable". A man who lets his own drug of choice kill him, is hardly one to be lecturing others on the evils of their own particular preferred substances.
"Ah, but tobacco doesn't mess up your mind like those 'bad' drugs do"... I can hear Frank say. But when tobacco kills you, it kills your brain too. Tobacco messed up Franks' brain, to the point of making him BRAIN DEAD!
Tobacco causes many types of cancer, not just the obvious ones like, lung, mouth, throat. Because it introduces all kinds of carcinogenic substances (e.g. benzene, cyanide, ammonia...) from the smoke into the BLOOD via the lungs.Guess what? Prostates are full of blood vessels!
Yes, Frank's brain dead, 'cause tobacco killed his brain along with his body.
We might have 40 more years of new Zappa music if it wasn't for his foolish, hypocritical, terminal drug abuse!
@Bobjb999 There are much more common causes for prostate cancer. The most frequent of them is aging. Just because he smoked it doesn't mean it caused his cancer. He had urinary problems and the doctor checked him, but he didn´t find it. Why don't you blame it on the doctor?
I'm not out to "prove" Frank's smoking was the cause of his death.Smoking certainly raised odds greatly of his dying early,&raised odds of acquiring many types of cancer, including the one that killed him.
My main point is Frank was a hypocrite re. drug abuse.Stats show tobacco to be probably the deadliest drug around, especially when smoked. 911 deaths were (&cocaine deaths are)a drop in the bucket compared to the 400K+ Americans killed yearly by smoking.
Somebody's missing the point here. If you actually listen to this clip, Frank's talking specifically about mind-altering drugs and the reasons people want to escape reality. A cigarette has never altered my perception of the world.
@obxetoperdido I believe it was his steady diet of hotdogs and coffee with the cigs that did him in. I don't think he got much exercise either. Maybe it was that "the good die young" thing, fuck could he make music god bless em
How many artists should to die for stopping young people losing their time with drugs ?

I did it maybe once a MONTH... Instead of smoking 3 PACKS A day!
I did not care if I went a day, or a week or a month with out it (coke).. obviously Frank and others can't go 1 HOUR with out additive tobacco...
Do people get hooked on coke? Sure, however tobacco is more additive...

we'll never know whether zappa's death was caused by smoking too much or perhaps simply an inherited cancer. maybe it was just in his dna.
what we do know is that man was a genius of the 20th century. and will no doubt be appreciated more and more as the decades go by.
he's criminally ignored.
zappa is a lifejacket in this sea of acoustic shit we live in. we miss you frank...

And you talk about tobacco killing him. I think the normal way to smoke cigarrettes is with the lungs, not with the prostate.
