  • I FINALLY get to play this song. We got it today, and the last time my school played it was my brother's senior year, and I'm a freshman. I'm so excited. (:

  • I'm the first Alto in my school. All I will say to the 9/8 solo is this: C#, you're the worst note ever. (B C# B C# D B etc.) ;)

  • Blue rondo much?

  • my marching band did this movement.... 9/8 marching FTW :D love this song with a passion

  • @JTRAIN8200 HIGH FIVE!!! :D

  • isnt there a story behind this song?

  • @ksbeasty809 It's about the volcano that destroyed Pompeii

  • our high school band played this..... not that bad but challenging ...but our lowest bands play grade 4&5 music and the middle band plays grade 6 and up and this was our top bands sight reading

  • just got this piece today.....

  • Love for the french horns? <3

  • @bonvea Yes! French horns are the best! I play second lol I absolutely love french horn it's so pretty.

  • @bariton714 great concert!! I got his autograph on his piece Sanctuary that we played last year at my high school =D

  • This is such an awesome song. I play 1st trombone, and I actually have a good part in the song.

  • @KMCDinc I agree, although i play second. :P

  • Can't wait until my band gets this up to Tempo! It'll be so cool then!

  • @emtem059968 We are at about 160, and the music is written at 168. We will probably end up taking it at 180...

  • *clarinet -3

  • FIRST CLAIRINET! -3

  • I play first alto and love that solo!

  • Clarinet solo swag

  • i was the accompaniment to the oboe flute solo during the whole slow part i beat out the first chair bass clarient(: ahh it was so much fun

  • I have first horn part... This stuff is crazy but I love it :D

  • @Rachel13723 I'm first horn too! Pretty great stuff. I love the part we have in the 9/8

  • @xxpurpleCHROMExx That and the part from measures 180 to 196 that are slow, in 3/4, are the only parts I'm confident in haha, but when I get into it I love it all.

  • @xxpurpleCHROMExx @Rachel13723 1st horn is where its at :) especially in a Ticheli piece.

  • 4:22 epic A Major Scale.

  • I really love this song and I love the euphonium part :)

  • @lobotennis1 Euphoniums are the best!

  • @JTRAIN8200 FROM THE HELL TO THE YEAH! Baritone Euphonium right here.

  • @concertbandland I believe its the north texas wind symphony

  • This piece and Canarios Fantasia are the main reasons I'm studying to be a conductor. So high-energy and exciting. I love music!

Played tuba in these pieces btw :D

  • I play Eflat ContraClarinet and I love this piece. DEEP VOICES RULE!!!!!

When My band director played this for us to finger along with I just couldn't stop my goosebumps. Love it! So freaking elaborate! I really wish we had an Oboe!

  • Comment removed

  • we only have 4 percussionists including myself in the top band. we're playing this and it's complete hell. it's an epic song though. not going to lie.

  • @intwotheweakly I know EXACTLY what you mean. We only have four percussionists too. We have every freaking instrument we own out for this song.

  • epic triangle ding at 6:18 :3 my mom was so proud

  • Gotta say, bassoon pretty much makes this piece cool xD girlfriend plays oboe (I feel sorry for her)

  • Ugh got to love the low brass.

  • Love this bass trombone!! I get to play some cool effects

  • my favorite part is 6:41 to 7:34

  • I keep asking if we can play this song again but no one wants to deal with the key sig, Smh lol

  • I love this I play 2nd french horn and I loved playing this song.

  • lol, he must have been thinking, "How can I make a piece that band will both love and hate equally?" XD.

  • Awww.. I wish our oboe didn't sound like shit. The solo is so sick.

  • @leask8r I'm glad our oboe knows his solo. Good thing I've practiced it to sound like the recording.

  • horn players- are the horn parts good in this?!?

  • @katjackson32

Well, I hear no off beats, so that's a plus :) Not a horn player, but there are awesome horn parts!

  • @katjackson32 I'm currently playing the second FH part of this for band competition coming up, and my section likes all their parts. We play stopped and mute in this piece, but I have yet to work with the mute. Oh, and the key is easy, key of C, so it's all natural. All in all, I think it's an epic piece and a lot of people are impressed when they hear you play it, and it makes other band kids jealous. :)

  • @katjackson32 YES unlike all those stupid marches where it's just offbeats repeatedly. I play second horn and I loved this piece.

  • NTWS beastinggggggg. this is legit. i love this song!

  • I think this the North Texas Wind Symphony

  • I love my high school director for have us play this piece this semester.

  • Playing this for Spring Concert <3 LOOOVE ITT! Oboe forever!

  • Playing this for All-District. :D

  • @concertbandland, it's the North Texas Wind Symphony.

  • Comment removed

  • @BoloBouncer Actually, it's the North Texas Wind Symphony. I have this exact recording on my iPod. It's from the Eugene Migliaro Corporation album called "Composer's Collection: Frank Ticheli."

  • @Libby4ever21 Maybe I was thinking of the recording we listened to while practicing. Thanks!

  • @BoloBouncer No prob!

  • Wow, this is an AMAZING ensemble. Too bad you don't know who it is. Thanks for posting though. Favourites for sure.

  • @kevrev0 @GraemeKernic and @medicff3 thank you very much <3

  • my director wants us to play this next semester we are a small band about 40 or less. it would be so amazing to get this ready...saddly no one in my band other than maybe 6 or 7 of us will learn it :( its been like that every year thus far. either way im looking forward to my timpani part for this song...kinda sorry i pushed off learning any time sigs to an 8th beat :\

  • my bad played this last year i lovethis song so much

  • what time signature is this? i want to do field conducting on this piece, but i'm not sure what the time signature is. if you could reply asap, i would love you forever

  • @AmberLei98 ...pretty much everyone you can imagine...and then some.

  • @AmberLei98

9/8. conducted 2+3+2+2. there are some 4/4 parts too but mostly 9/8.

  • @AmberLei98

9/8. pulse is 2+3+2+2. there are some 4/4 parts but mostly 9/8

  • @AmberLei98 just look for groups of 3's and 2's

  • @AmberLei98 the actual bar lines matter very little

  • My symphonic winds played this for Festival last year, and got almost a perfect score :D The judges were speechless > u < One of them was like," THAT WAS SICK." First thing he said once he got up on stage to talk to us. IT WAS SO AWESOME I MISS THIS PIECE SO MUCH ; A ;

  • This makes my face tired already.

  • I got to meet him at the Midwest clinic :D and played the Clarinet Concerto under his conducting...HO MAH GAWD!!!! he is an amazing composer and an even better person :) talked with him about composing and music theory for almost 2 hours!

  • Apparently we start playing this today.

Our winter concert was last night. Hahahahah. No rest for the horns!

  • I got pulled from 2nd Flute to 1st Flute to play this, lucky I practised both 1st and 2nd.

  • only ticheli would write something in this time signature

  • flutter-tonguing FTW!

  • The Marimba part on this can't make up it's mind on whether it should be Treble Clef or Bass Clef.... -___- I love it tho

  • I love playing this song! My part is so fun!

    LOLJK I PLAY TUBA.

  • @ktmusic3 Such a ridiculous amount of time spent on counting rests for the tuba part in this song... The actual part was a ton of fun though.

  • @ktmusic3 the tuba part is awesome!!!

  • @ktmusic3 bull the tuba is fun to play in this song if u actually get into it lol

  • 4:30 the most beautiful I've ever heard any wind ensemble piece go. the rest of the song could suck and I'd love it just because of that part <3 thank you all-state band for introducing me to Frank Ticheli

  • The USC wind ensemble performed this I believe.

  • Played 2nd flute on this years ago...totally rock this out on a bassoon! Aw yeah!

  • @UsagitheBassoonist i stopped playing oboe 5 years ago and i've been rocking the basson ever since

  • I love how all the comments on these kinds of videos pretty much end in the person glorifying whatever section they play in. PS Trombones rock!

  • 4 people can't play "Vesuvius"

  • played this my freshman year. almost played it junior year, hoping to play it senior year! Is it obvious how much I love this piece? amazing work <3

  • Playing this in wind ensemble at my school as a 10th grade clarinet! It's super fun to play!!!

  • Played under the baton of Frank Ticheli at Rome, Italy, not many 15 year old Euphonium players can say that.

  • @EuphPlayer115 no way dude!!!!!1 srsly?!!?

  • @LillyPotter7 Yeah, I think there is a video up.

  • @LillyPotter7 We also played An American Elegy, Amazing Grace, and San Antonio Dances.

  • @EuphPlayer115

Luck you....I had my director's baton thrown at me during a rehearsal of this song....

  • We are playing excerpts of this piece for the Midwest Clinic in December! So amazing! Euphoniums for the win xD

  • FRENCH HORN!!!!!!! <3333333333

  • Flutes all the way. SIXTEENTH NOTES DON'T SCARE ME!!!

  • INCANTATION AND DANCE. LOOK IT UP. NOW.

  • @zgrmuffin YUS YUS!!!

    Fantastic piece! Clarinets FTW!!

  • @zgrmuffin SOOOO much fun to play<3

  • @zgrmuffin There are a few phrases in Blue Shades taken from Incantation and Dance as well.

  • @Kmacicek9sMONTAGES slapstick, bass drum and temple blocks yuhh money

  • Sounds remotely like Into the Storm by Robert W. Smith.

  • 1,2-1,2,3-1,2-1,2 >.<

  • Ticheli surely must've had a trollface on when deciding what key signature to pick

  • @orangebhuddy29 time signature too

  • @MegaMunchy that too haha whoops

  • @orangebhuddy29 and time signature

  • I am playing this in my college band. It is so fun, I love it. Go the Alto Saxophones!!!!

  • Playing this for the Wind Orchestra I'm in this Monday at the Con in Sydney. Go the Flutes!!!!

  • @EziosDisciple DAMN STRAIGHT. :D

  • Nothing about the parts are exactly difficult. The hard part is the right sounds and style. The main theme is crisp and intense. There's a lot of instruments that have to speak out with unusual sounds like French horn a.d still sound good

  • @skatardrummer The low brass runs later in the song around 5:15 were brutal. I had to sit down and practice those runs for hours to master them with 100% accuracy.

  • @killer500226 Well to be honest it was relatively easy to me, but then again I played Euphonium. I can imagine how hard it is to play in tenor/bass trombone.

  • This was the song that My high school used for our Marching Band show this year, except that it was cut up into 4 Movements. :D It was awesome!

  • @MisoraHibiki was the whole show called volcano?

  • darn all we did was sightread this i wish we could play it!

  • i was lucky enough to actually play this piece with frank ticheli conducting it!! a once in a lifetime experience :)

  • @xAllThingsMustPassx I am so jealous. I love his work, and this is one of my favorite compositions of his. If I had that experience... OH MY GOSH! So jealous!

  • We're playing this for our Spring concert this year. I'm more than a little excited.

  • I want Flute sheet music!

  • Tuba rips! :)

  • ..... We are playing this at districts....? o.o Holy crap this is going to be awesome!!!!

  • If any of you have heard the piece I'm talking about, like this if 1:09-1:25 reminds you of Confluence by Samuel Hazo

  • this was a beast hard to master but fun when you got it down

  • I was writing a paper, and hit the last period right as the last note was sounded, I loved playing tenor sax on this song. I was the middle section so I got to blast the cannon when it was the tenor lines turn.

  • and I learned 3 new notes on oboe today from this song.

  • @bigfishv5 Copy and paste in text.document. And theres always the ''sign me in always''..

  • @404jipjip it ranges from 1/4 to 2/4 to 3/4and to 4/4 but is also in 7/8, 8/8, and 9/8

  • i remember playing this in honor's band and everytime the flutes flutter-tounged, our conductor broke out in laughter. He also stopped us in mid song to tell the bass drumer that at the end he wanted him to hit the drum so hard that it broke. It broke during the performance right afterwards lightning went off. Most epic ending ever.

  • @roflspaz10

(Me and my friend were Bass T-Bone for this song)

needless to say we LOVED 8:15 :)

  • wow what is the time signature in this?

  • @404jipjip 9/6 broken down into 2+3+2+2 and then there are tons of random 2+3+3+2+2 and such. the slow oboe solo is in 1 but is normally in 3/4. It seems complicated but once you start playing this song it makes it much simpler.

  • @roflspaz10 ok wow it does sound complicated i've never seen a 9/6 time signature i guess you learn something new everyday huh haha :D thank you. so you have played this before?

  • So much bragging...

I hate to break it to you, but the sax part isn't very difficult for the most part.

  • @concertbandland many ensembles have played it haha

  • @yam3sam What was meant was that it is not known which ensemble this recording came from.

  • Played this as a freshman in high school. Alto 1, and nailed it

  • Played this my freshman year at the university of arkansas at pine bluff sp05 now I'm a proud alumni december 2010 #memories

  • i get to play the basson in this then changing to 1 st clarinet, I love this peice

  • I'm going to do the sax solos :)

  • My favorite part is 0:00-9:10

  • @NotStuckJustResting

what about the last 28 seconds? :(

  • @NotStuckJustResting I agree.

  • Drink all the coffee, drink all the tea, then you drink all the coke, and you go to the bathroom.

  • So, I've noticed we've had this piece in our music library since last year and I meant to look it up. Now, I want to play this. I'm auditioning for lead oboe (there's two of us so one in 1st band the other in 2nd band) and I will recommend this to whoever band director I get...I want this oboe soloooooooo.

  • 3:34 starts my favorite part<333

  • No one makes a piece... otherwise it would be a concerto.

  • My high school number 2 band got this to play a few days ago. After two days of work, it is greatly improved and i'm so excited to play it at our next concert :)

  • I just got this song in my high school wind ensemble a few weeks ago, LOVE IT!

  • @itzgeraldo Ive done this song for the past 3 years in my class. we win every compition here in the northwest with it:) good luck with it

  • cool stuff

  • I loved playing alto sax for this ^_^ Saxes definitely make the piece

LOLJK they all do... [but especially the sax]

  • This is my favorite Ticheli piece! My marching band's show last year was based on it, and it was epic.

And of course, I love the clarinet solo.

  • sorry but epic bass drum fail at 5:40 half a beat late

  • @egor99ify it was played the way it was written. i'm pretty sure no failing occurred.

  • oh yeah. they won a big national award last year for playing it.

  • @Kealingbandrockz I meant last year's wind ensemble

  • might be KMS Wind Ensemble

  • @manutd030698 not this year mr.g said no

  • im in wind ensemble low brass and we r doing this song gulp
