  • The "Pete Dialogue" is fuckin awesome!

  • Keith Moon is the shit

  • pete is amazing ajaja

  • Beatles should've said what Pete said.

  • @TheBeatlesRoooock I've always found it ironic that The Beatles stopped touring right before the Marshall stack was invented. Had they been patient......

  • Got to get a copy of either of Long Beach or San Fran. "sit down and f*ing shut up"

  • very loud wuhahaha! wow!

  • Listen to those P90's chime...this is the version I had on cassette as a kid..Who's Missing, i believe.

  • Kieth Moon is playing lead drums this song.

  • @cottonlee1 I don't give a flying fuck if I wasted your time I really don't, but what are you on about? You don't wanna see pictures or what? Fuck you 'coz everybody else here has been able to just enjoy the music, that's the thing whats important you know

  • @cottonlee1 if you care that much about your fucking time why are you wasting it by writing fucking stupid comments?

  • Does he fuck up the 2nd verse?

  • Something like Pete bashing Abbie Hoffman's head with his guitar, at Woodstock, when the goof stormed the stage.

  • What exactly happened to cause him to shout like that? Pete takes it so seriously, He likes to restore order to the audience, and his language got a little salty. They cause people to get happy, who usually get out of hand somewhat. What a band, 47 years worth of pure music!!

  • Where did you find this version of the song? I MUST HAVE THE ENTIRE ALBUM!!!!!!

  • @Entwistle54 this is from the 30 years max r&b box set they released around 1994. this version of bargain is from the san francisco civic auditorium, 1971.

  • @Entwistle54 this is from the 30 years max. r&b box set they released around 94. this version of bargain is from the 1971 tour at the san francisco civic auditorium.

and gotta love that jam at the end!

  • The last minute of this song. Wow!

  • John Bonham or Peart couldn't....they just didn't have his creative style, they were better at their solos not their studio work (respecting Achillies Last Stand and YYZ)

  • excellent,simply excellent, i'm speechless!

  • Superb version. I'd say The Who were at their live/studio peak around about this time. I remember reading somewhere that Roger thought the synth/moog they used on the studio version of this song sounded like a belly ache to him, ha ha. Such a powerful band on stage, one of my faves along with Purple and Zep. Cheers for posting.

  • This is a fucking r n r concert not a fucking tea party....always makes me smile and he meant it! X))

  • Agreed, ilovejourney1. Great version!

  • why couldn't have the beatles said 0:00 to 0:20 at every f'ing gig that they played? they probably would've lasted much longer.

  • This is an awesome version

  • I went to the Long Beach concert where Pete told us to shut up (pretty funny, actually!), and there was a bootleg of it called "Closer to Queen Mary" which I have, and must've been used by the guy who included it in this upload (judging by the record noise). The sound quality of the song is great, not off a bootleg, that's for sure!

  • I love how Pete doesnt take any shit from the audience, he's always telling them to sit down or stand up and shut up hahaha

  • great performance----really beats the hell out of the studio version (which is quite good itself)

  • I was at this show at San Francisco's Civic Auditorium, 12/13/71, 14 years old (had school the next day). Joe Walsh opened. Tickets were $3.50 (quite expensive at the time). Saw the last half of the concert pressed against the stage on Pete's side, 15 feet from his HiWatts. The entire Who's Next album was played as a long medley, one song just flowing into the next (the old songs, Tommy numbers, etc., preceeding it).

This experience literally changed my life. Now I realize it was a banner show.

  • I was at this concert, in SF, 14 years old, flat against the stage on Pete's side, 15 feet from his HiWatts.

    Literally changed my life.

  • Good listening. I got the uncut version of this song on cassette tape.

  • I really can't explain how good The Who were at this time, i would love to hear the rest of this show, but i guess nobody knows where it is

  • fantastic.

  • 1 + 1 = 1

  • This live version is easiest to listening. Thanks!

  • lol

  • @LSFuckingD The friend, and what such lol ? Vegas it that such city? Where it is? I live in Russia in the city of Arkhangelsk, I am opened for dialogue. Yes, about Nadezhdy Kadyshevoj, it there was a joke, Russian humour

  • @TheRomarior Vegas, Las Vegas, is a city that exists...you can bet on that...quite a shitty city. I live there. Though, I have no fucking clue as to why..

  • @TheRomarior OK

  • why was pete so pissed off in the opening?

  • Because .....he's 'Pete' & he can ;)

  • because Moon started drumming

  • love the image at 2:18. pretty ironic after hearing the opening dialogue haha.

  • Best Live Band I've Seen

  • Jeez that section from about 2:50 onward UNREAL!!!

  • the last part is faded out.... sarcatically: (something like) "all you motherfuckers are killing oneanother"....

  • Could this be the best ending of any rock 'n roll song, live or recorded, ever?

  • I think Pete and Roger's voices compliment each other beautifully. What a great band.

  • That's the way I talk to my kids

  • I'll tell ya fucka something!!

That made me laugh so hard! He must have been so wasted!!

  • chrisbass48, that messed up intro to real me was from the king bisquit flower hour. It was played on the radio in march of 74 when they announced the tour for 74. I saw them in msg june 10 and 13th...

  • Listen to that bass run at 3:38 - awesome timing, awesome tone, on the button Mr Entwistle!!

  • I respect Pete Townshend as a musician and all, but damn you shouldn't yell at your fans like that. LMAO.

  • People kinda like it when God raises his mighty voice at them, at least he's paying them direct attention. Ha ha, and kids do kinda think rock stars are Gods. . .sorta. They probably thought it was kinda cool. I think it's lame, because I don't see musicians as Gods (anymore). Great version of this tune!

  • I agree... No one I've ever heard the drums has mastered it like the talents of Keith John Moon. Period... Bottom Line....

  • No one could play the fucking drums like Keith Moon. No one.

  • @Bopalena AMEN TO THAT BRO., ABSOLUTELY UNCANNY DAMN IS ALL I CAN SAY, AND WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING FOR A LONG TIME. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, PEOPLE ACTUALLY THINK j. Bonham and others are as good or even better, HOW CAN ONE HONESTLY THINK THAT.

  • Neil Peart

  • @nardo363636 uh, no.

  • John Bonham

  • @Bopalena I agree,he dont have the best technique, but made an amazing job,and was one of the innovators,no doubt about it

  • @Bopalena Bonzo. They were best buddies. Equals!

  • @Bopalena

I always thought that this song was a great example of Keith's drumming at his best. There is so much counterpoint going on here between Keith, John and Pete, but Keith really makes this song what it is: Great.

  • @mrboffo28 - Keith was IT, man! The BEST rock and roll drummer EVER, period!!!

  • I was at the SF show... F-ing amazing! They were at their highest energy at this time. Ticket was like $5.50. One of the first shows I ever saw & still rates in my top 5 of all time. My dad waited in line to get me one of the last available tickets. I was like 13 yo, & told him I would cut school. My brother drove me up to the show. I saw "Who's left in 06', ticket was $250. They were still great, but of the 5 or so times I saw them, the SF show was the best!

  • My brother & his girlfriend sat outside the concert in the soundtruck, so I know it was recorded. I would love to hear it, the whole show was simply amazing!

  • F'n rad, dude!@ What can you remember about the show?

  • Comment removed

  • I mostly remember the intensity & energy that each band member put into it. I remember Pete sitting on a ladder during Magic Bus & doing a parody of an SF car salesman, then leaping from the ladder with a crunching power chord & landing on his knees on the stage floor. This was 40 yrs. ago, yet there are still clear images in my mind. Windmilling guitar arms & big air from Pete. Perpetual motion & swinging mic from Roger. Flying drumsticks & gymnastics from Keith, while John never moved.

  • Such a great introduction!!!

    Peace.

    Rock

  • Does anyone know where to get "Decidedly Belated Response" a bootleg from the American 73 tour from, it had an excellent fucked up intro to "The Real me" ?

  • that pete dialogue is on 30 years of maximum r and b

  • Full Power, The WHO!!!

  • great song

  • Pete Dialogue - Long Beach, California December 10, 1971.

Bargain - San Francisco Civic Auditorium December 12, 1971. (This is an edited version of the performance)

  • this isnt the same cooncert from the begining, the intro is from long beach

  • Pete Dialogue - Long Beach, California December 10, 1971.

Bargain - San Francisco Civic Auditorium December 12, 1971. (This is an edited version of the performance)

  • Can anyone tell me the venue and bootleg this song comes from- please

    thank you

  • the who are geniuses (especially townsend; i can't knock 'em)..

  • Checkout Pete's Daffy Duck impersonation at 2:16 (Worthsth nothing..). Damn, I even dig his minor flubs.

  • Ok I might have missed it in Pete's intro but why was he angry?

  • in thier heyday, no one could touch them...

  • I agree with Pete. It is very annoying to any band when the audience is making noise and generally acting like assholes. How can they give a decent performance with all that disruption? Ian Anderson told the crowd shut the fuck up or Jethro Tull would quit playing and leave the stage. I know; I was at that concert.

  • the intro and the version of bargain are separate recordings, this wasn't the same concert.

  • Yeah yeah I know. I never said they were from the same concert.

  • So which concert is this recording from??

  • Pete Dialogue - Long Beach, California December 10, 1971.

Bargain - San Francisco Civic Auditorium December 12, 1971. (This is an edited version of the performance)

  • yeah you can really tell it is two different performances, the volume changes. It is an awesome thing to hear the WHO in all their live glory!

  • Ain't it grand being a WHO fan!

  • tight as fuck band like - awesome!!

  • Wow...calm down, Pete. :-) But WOW, that was amazing!!

  • If only we could force people who are in bands that are on the radio and play live shows today to listen to this and hope that it could rub off on them a little bit....

  • why so angry?

  • To those who would: that's how to fuc*in' do it.

  • The Who were always solid & professional, but live, they were always taking it to the edge, always taking chances, trying something that might take the song even higher. They fed off each others' madness. Unsparing of themselves. If you know about singing, you know that Daltrey is taking really big risks going for those high notes. That takes guts, on top of the best pipes in the biz. The Who? The best. They make no sense at all. A class of their own. 40 yrs a fan, still hear new things.

  • I remember this live version of Bargain from the album, Who's Missing;from the 80's. If memory serves the album listed the song as 1972 but included no date or location for the performance. As for the best live version ever??...Judging on performance alone its always subjective; as far as sound quality, this is the best I've heard. How can you beat vintage Who in their very prime..The band was a machine and Moonie in particular, was sharp as a blade in 71 and 72! VivaLaWho!!

  • The Best versions of songs are usually because the band gets angry before they play the song.

  • This is the first time I've heard this song played live

  • This is San Francisco right? If it is then there's about a minute and a half cut out between 4:14-4:16. The full version's 6 minutes long.

  • Yes this is San Francisco and yes it is apparently an edited version yes.

  • Where in San Francisco? Filmore?

  • Pete Dialogue - Long Beach, California December 10, 1971.

Bargain - San Francisco Civic Auditorium December 12, 1971. (This is an edited version of the performance)

  • Where is the rest of the soundboard to the SF Civic Auditorium performance???? Love to hear the whole thing!!!!

  • I don't know, got this from "Thirty Years of Maximum R&B"

  • Him yelling is actually from a solo show he did.

  • @DrYunx ... He must have been yelling at that heckler that always wants to hear Magic Bus ... LOL

  • @DrYunx

Wrong. He may have been yelling at a solo concert, but the beginning of this YouTube is from Long Beach 1971, and there's a bootleg album from that show.

  • I had a bootleg called: Closer to Queen Mary that had the Pete Dialogue on it before it move right into Bargain and "That" Bargain didn't have the great sound as this version, but it was a more hard blasting ending I've ever heard live of this song. But that's gone so very I'm happy this is up to hear. Who Fan since My Generation, so My friends think I'm a lost cause by now. 56 years old and still think (KNOW) this is the Greatest Band of all time.

  • Woo! Pete sounds really bloody mad! LOL!

  • Amazing peformance.

  • best ?.. not even close to me but these things are 100% subjective as alwyas..
