@loltaygirl218 hey have a look at space painting. its very basic yet produces stunning results. often you need to find your style and go from there. good luck
How do you use the depth of field button on a dslr. I have a Canon 7D. Can you view the image your shooting before taking the shot using the depth field button to decide if it's the the right depth and make the adjustments while using the depth of field button then take the shot.
@krazy4baja A problem with using DOF preview button on a SLR is the difficulty of the small screen. On fixed focal length lenses (as opposed to zoom lenses) you have a depth of field scale. Once you know the distance you are focused on you can see by the scale how much DOF you can get. When using the preview button the image goes dark and if using a small aperture it is very difficult. You can get scales in app. form. Have a look at (dot) dofmaster(dot)com/dofjs(dot)html on the web.

@kclifford007 it wouldn't really matter as long as it would be fast enough to stop camera shake and to stop the object being shot from moving....sometimes a tripod and cable release to fire the camera could be the way to go....
Hmm I read here something, Could it be because I am using a small Dv camera with a small optical sensor? at 1/6" the sensor is very far from a tru 35 mm system
I cant seem to make any of these results nearly as identical as yours man, I have tried close and far distance, wide and long lenses, aperture size from F1.6 to much higher
I can achieve out of focus behind the subject, HOWEVER! I can never get a really blurry background behind a full body shot??
@leviterande - Camera set to aperture priority? If you're like most of us a full frame sensor is too pricey. APS-C sensors give less dof and that may be a contributing factor. Also consider choosing 1 focus point (on my canon set on the right upper corner of the body) Hope you salve your dilemma.

Finally.....someone who explained the size of the lenses and aperture settings with examples. You sir, should have been paid for this. Thanks so much!
Please can someone help me with DOF? I've got a Nikon D90 with a 18-105mm lens, can I get DOF with this lens or am I wasting my time? I'm really clueless, but really wanna learn this stuff.
@FirebrandNIRE first put the wheel on the top to the letter A then make the F-stop number as small as possible, focus your lens on what you are taking a picture of either by pushing the shutter button half way or twisting the focus ring and take the picture, you can do it with any camera and lens even a point and shoot
@MegaAfroGuy It is not possible with any camera and lense. DOF depends from aperture, subject distance and sensor size.
With P'n'S cameras you can not get that so well. Even with zoom cameras for 600mm (36mm) focal you get sharper background because the sensor is too small. That is one reason why many preferr cameras with full-size sensors so they can get more easily smaller DOF. Lenses on wide angle you can not get same effect as well than using long focal and same aperture size.
@TheFri13 well dof will happen with any lens, the blokeh wont be good at all but it will still work. everything being in prefect focus would mean having no dof, even with f36 on a 4/3 or f-22 on a p&s camera will still blur a bit
@MegaAfroGuy I did not make myself clear. All P'n'S cameras does make DOF. But it is not strong one because the sensor is so small. When compared to (D)LSR cameras where you can have fullsize sensor, you get much stronger DOF so background is almost single color. But still depending aperture, distance and sensor size.
Just use tilt/shift lense with big sensor (now we are actually talking about architecture film cameras). Just put f:64 or f:128 and tilt it so DOF goes along the ground.
@FirebrandNIRE You can get. Just for potraits, use 85-100mm (36mm equilavent) (some people preferr 50-56mm (36mm) as what is the size what human eye sees) and focus so close as possible to get the subject as you want. Closer you are and longer focal you use, with small (as possible) f: then shorter the DOF will be.
When the subject range grows, then DOF will grow as well, even when using same f:. Example, f:5.6 at 45cm could give you a 8cm DOF. But focus to 15 meters and you have 5 meters DOF.
@SmokenRocker There is magical number what applyis to every photographer. Only 5% of photos will be successfull. And that means what are your top photos what you can show to anyone. No matter how much you shoot, the 5% applies. But for controlled situations, you can gain more good photos what ain't technically bad, but they just dont have the feel what you want, what are in those 5% photos. I have asked has any photographer succeed to overrule this continuesly and answer is no.
i wish i would do this with my superzoom, lowest is f2.8 but its way different then that of a dslr. The background can be partially blurred but it's still not my desired effect...
@yyyy2999 Reason is that with point-and-shoot cameras you have too small sensor on them to get the same effect with same settings as cameras with bigger sensor. You need to zoom out as much as possible and use smallest aperture to get better effect. The sensor size is reason why cameraphones and point'n'shoot cameras will never get same quality as DSLR's. Same thing apply otherwise. DSLR's can not have same effect as medium size or architecture cameras. All cameras has their power and weakness
That depends on your needs. If you want to take ten pictures to get one really nice picture then the DSLR should be your choice. If your are looking for the very best quality for large prints and you are experienced to the point where you take perfect pictures in every situation then the SLR should be your choice. If price is no problem, I would choose a very high resolution DLSR because the quality of these cameras is to the point where the picture quality is even better then film cameras.
@SKTPSY No simple answer or overruling why digital SLR is better than film SLR. For normal user, the cost of film, development and so on is such that it can not be used so well. It is time consuming and with time, negatives/dias will suffer. DSLR gives faster the photos for use, allows easier (more in most cases) post-processing and on 2010 most espensive DSLR starts to have same quality as fiml cameras has with normal films.
And there is the price. With DSLR you can shoot as much as you want.
you can do DOF on a point and shoot, its just harder. Although on my LX3 its quite easy because of the focal length of the lens, and the sensor is larger than most P&S cams.
even a cheapie can do it, but dont expect great blur or anything
you can kiss good bye to compact pocket camera. they won't have any DOF. it's better to invest in a decent dslr and a lens with a good bokeh (out of focus). for example, nikon d90 with 50mm 1.8 or 85mm 1.8 could do the trick. why not d40? d40 has not internal focus motor; therefore, you have to focus your lens manually to take pictures. hope this helps.
Great video! Depth of field is probably one of the most useful tools for great photographs.

I put up a whole bunch of photos using my cheap consumer range $200 Canon camera which many people say look quite pro. Check it out if you like. A good photographer only needs a good eye! Link from my profile vid. Cheers Rich
Small compacts have small sensors. That combined with the small built in lenses is extremely limited to very basic photography. To make matters worse, the higher megapixel count on these compacts on to their tiny sensors leads to lots of noise and artifacts. Simply put, if you want fantastic photos, you need quality glass (and a keen eye). And the only way to get good glass is via DSLRs and a variety of Lenses. It all depends on the type of photos we all want to shoot.
keen eye? what do they do set up lights? great images are made not taken, replace keen eye with years of studying light and photography and i will agree with you.
While I do partially agree that some great images are "Made", In my style of photography, Great Images are instead "Captured". Most shots are Instant and capture a moment in time / history that could have been lost in a fraction of a Second. These types of shots we cannot set up for or "make". They're just captured and we have to be prepared for them, or randomly wait for them to happen. I would believe that journalistic photography is similar. Photography is truly a great hobby and profession.
@blacksunway It IS clear who the tutorial is directed. He's just showing what can be done. If your limitations were all that were included, the lesson would be incomplete. You should also know that there are plenty of people who "can afford" and do, in fact, buy expensive equipment so your comment that only pros can afford the equipment is makes no sense. People who have enough money can afford expensive equipment.
@blacksunway it comes down to commitment, are you working at Walmart or are you a serious artist, do you think Ansel Adams used cheap lenses? I assure you that he didn't. A life time of commitment and sacrifice has to be made. You have to spend every once of energy and every dollar to your commitment. Look at Charles Bukowski poor but every dollar went into his writing.
Cheers for that, i've been wondering how to properly work with depth of field but i have a 45mm lens so it's only good for macro shots, i can't really get it to work if the subject isn't close to the lens.
No, you misunderstand. DOF is mainly controlled by your aperture. Try using your camera in Av mode (aperture priority) and play with different "f" values.
Another rule I don't know if the video mentions is the ratio of distance from the subject to the background - Camera:Subject:Background should exceed 1:1:1
Tank you very much for this tutorial. It is very helpfull, especially because you are showing pictures=the results of using different apertures/ lenses.
Yes they certainly do. 3 hrs of work at like a wedding can be anywhere from 300 - 500 US, & that's the reasonable ones ... I had some pics done by a reputable professional in my area and it was 1.5hrs, it cost 150 base fee plus a 50$ deposit.
Very well presented, doesn't boggle the mind like a lot of tutorials out there do ... also highlighted an important point - the use of different lenses and their effect on depth of field. thank you, very helpful !
thank you so much for posting this. I've tried my hardest to find a tutorial that did not include a digital camera. I love that you don't, and please post more if possible. Also if you could do more for beginners that would be great I have a friend who is trying to get into it and had quite an eye but no educational background in photography. I don't have the time or else I'd help her. :) But anyhoo, thanks again!
hey if any of u guys are photographers or even have a camera...you should hit up this site and see if you think you're good enough to earn a little dough. It's easier than you'd think. productsupplycenter (dot) com/web48075
I have a lens of 18-55mm and I was trying to take a picture with blur background. Could you give me some tips or do I need to buy a new lens that I can get as low as f2.8. thanks
Most digital SLR kit lenses have a maximum aperture in the f3.5 to f5.6 range depending on which end of the zoom range you are using. A 55mm lens at f5.6 will not give you a particularly shallow depth of field. To achieve this, you need either a longer lens such as 200mm or longer, or a wider aperture. Quite a few people like to use a fixed 50mm or 55mm lens with an aperture of f1.8 or f1.4 as their standard lens which gives greater opportunity to blur the background.
@loltaygirl218 hey have a look at space painting. its very basic yet produces stunning results. often you need to find your style and go from there. good luck

You can get scales in app. form. Have a look at (dot) dofmaster(dot)com/dofjs(dot)html on the web.

f2.8 @ 180mm ? f4 @ 300mm ? LOL, is this an advertisement for extremely expensive lenses?
Because those who can afford the lenses with such properties are already professionals and don't need an tutorial like this.
With the image at 2:15 you should also display the price of this lens - to make clear whom is your tutorial dedicated to.
I'm truly disappointed with tutorials for beginners using the pro equipment. This is not what an amateur can achieve with the affordable equipment.

Cheers for that, i've been wondering how to properly work with depth of field but i have a 45mm lens so it's only good for macro shots, i can't really get it to work if the subject isn't close to the lens.

photography is a good hobby but the cameras are just way expensive.

So to achive depth of field one needs good long leense am i right?
I got only one lens that came with my D Ribel and its 55mm. I have hard time making depth of field photos.
EZrussian 2 years ago
No, you misunderstand. DOF is mainly controlled by your aperture. Try using your camera in Av mode (aperture priority) and play with different "f" values.
Another rule I don't know if the video mentions is the ratio of distance from the subject to the background - Camera:Subject:Background should exceed 1:1:1

does a professinal photographer get paid well
DurBanPoison420uh 3 years ago
Yes they certainly do. 3 hrs of work at like a wedding can be anywhere from 300 - 500 US, & that's the reasonable ones ... I had some pics done by a reputable professional in my area and it was 1.5hrs, it cost 150 base fee plus a 50$ deposit.

thank you so much for posting this.

So would a longer mm lens be better to use with a wider aperture to give the shot a more blurred background?

it shouldnt matter if you focus on the subject.

I have a lens of 18-55mm and I was trying to take a picture with blur background. Could you give me some tips or do I need to buy a new lens that I can get as low as f2.8. thanks
mtada258 3 years ago
Most digital SLR kit lenses have a maximum aperture in the f3.5 to f5.6 range depending on which end of the zoom range you are using. A 55mm lens at f5.6 will not give you a particularly shallow depth of field. To achieve this, you need either a longer lens such as 200mm or longer, or a wider aperture. Quite a few people like to use a fixed 50mm or 55mm lens with an aperture of f1.8 or f1.4 as their standard lens which gives greater opportunity to blur the background.
