  • Fantastic video! Man I wish I had a setup like that. I'm currently working on a few custom knife concepts and I'm really worried about getting that grind right. All we have right now is a basic angle grinder, and that's much less than ideal. But I do think we may have access to some better machines. We shall see. I really want to do pretty much the same thing you have here...the full flat grind. I really hope I can make it work. Thanks for the video! Loving the series!

  • Sehr eindrucksvoll erklärt.

    Gut gemacht.

    Daumen hoch !

  • Sorry to hear about your back(spine issues). We're all praying for you brother! You just rest up and get better, we'll wait. ;) God Bless!

  • Really excellent video series. Much thanks for posting and taping. Tell you the truth, I tend to learn more from watching youtube instructional videos than I do from the professionally made Dvds, which tend to suffer from either poor lighting, crappy audio or dubious information and sometimes all three. They're often criminally overpriced as well.

  • Thanks ritter89 - I hope to finish them in the near future or have my apprentice do it. My spine issues have prevented me from doing much in the shop for quite a while. On the other hand, if I've taught CJ Powell well enough, he should be able to pick up where I left off and get it done for you folks. Take care and God Bless. Wayne

  • Do you know of any kind of jigs that would make this easier?

  • @JaKeth3snake @JaKeth3snake Jake - Check out this channel

There is a vid on the bubble jig for flat grinding.

  • Do you know of any kind of jigs that would make this easier?

  • That is a 100x harder than it looks. I tried and I couldn't get the same angle every time. How do you do it!?

  • Jake - sorry for the delay in responding - I missed these somehow. The answer is the age old cliche one - practice, practice, practice. Trust me, if you do it enough there will be a day that muscle memory takes over and you'll be amazed at how much you improve over night.

  • Nice work.

    5*

  • Hi echodawg - This knife project is still alive and kicking. However, life got in the way. I broke my back some years ago and it decided to cause me a lot of problems recently so there's not been much in the way of spare shop time. BUT - IT WILL GET DONE AND IT WILL GET AWARDED! Stick with me on this.

  • FYI - The next segment, episode, part of the series will be adding nickel silver bolsters and handle material. I want to ask everyone participating to VOTE on either WOOD handles or black MICARTA handles. Whatever the consensus is will be put on the knife.

  • you make it look so easy! you do a great job, and this is one of the best video series i have seen here on youtube.

    thanks again!

  • "Adjust the belt so it is running slightly off of the platen." Is that so there is platen showing on the plunge side of the blade or so that belt can curve over the platen on the plunge side?

  • Having the belt slightly OVER the edge of the platen provides a smoother, rounder plunge cut. The closer the belt is to the edge the more square the plunge will be. You want a nice curved transition not a squared off one.

  • I love that flat grind!

I believe that this is the best knife making series that I've seen on YouTube. It has taught me more than any other!

    Thanks!

  • Amazing... I know that I would end up with a set of custom made, steel toothpicks :) Hats off to you sir, a learning experience and a pleasure.

  • This pair of vid's came at the right time ( for me in the UK), as I have to get up for heart medication, I get to have a cup of tea and a view of the next issues ! Super vid's and instructions, as always, 5 * save and fave !
