Smitty looks slightly spastic but DAMN he's got the speed. He tends to lose the sticking though on some of the real speedy stuff. Just a TAD sloppy at times. Mostly in the first half of the vid. Awesome playing by both Smiths though. If I had to choose, Smitty took this one.
@drumbumNaTub no offense, but he wasnt sloppy at all. this is one of the better drum "battles" that i've seen. prove me wrong. this is 2 of my favorite top 5 percussionists ever
They are both great drummers -musicians just with different approaches to soloing. I do give this one to Steve Smith though as his solo came across a bit smoother, effortless & very musical. "Smitty" is an outstanding drummer in his own right, neither of them is "better" than the other, it's just personal preference. Don't know why people gotta start shit -not like this is Buddy Rich & the guy from Hootie and the Blowfish or something equally absurd. These two guys are both class "A" players.
@ren2020ky well I'm clearly wasting me time as you cannot even see that they are attempting to trade 4 bar solo's for the majority of this piece. You also didnt answer with any intelligence, you merely insulted me again. The face that you think four bar phrases only apply to groove's show how little you know about music. Go and shove your head a little further up your ass.
@Burningeordie trading 4 bar phrases? are u even listening to the same thing i am? what is wrong with u? they dont even play in the same measure have the time. so because ur middle school music teacher only taught u music in 4/4, u think thats what every thing should be played in? soooooo primitive. and im shoving my head up my ass? lol. i majored in music at morehead university,u idiot. i work in a studio for a living.
i think smith is a better drummer than smith. i could be wrong. maybe smith did a better job here than smith. no, it was definitely smith. no, i changed my mind. it was smith.
I do believe that Steve has great admiration for Smitty and that he's glad to share the stage with him...It show at the 4:min mark, both are glad to be playing with each other.......
horrible ! What made drumming a cliché.Robot drummers and human beat box. Both boring and ridiculous. That said of course, they are great technicians but inspired vomit or suicide depending of the mood of the day i'm in. :-0
@Easleytee ...............If you are going to talk shit about Steve Smith, you prove once again that you have no clue..........Out of his leage......he has his own league!........Give Smitty his speed...ok............but almost knowbody is as smooth, clean, effortless and has the amazing transitions like Steve Smith!......your an idiot....I know it and your parents know it.....but i bet they wont evn talk to you!
@eqsmooth That's fine and why I prefaced my comments about Steve. When it comes to musicality, competition takes a back seat. But as much as it was a billed as a duet, it was an old fashioned cutting contest, in the spirit of Buddy or Chick Webb. And in that sense, Smitty buried him with speed, power and precision. He took everything Steve played up a notch. That doesn't take away from the musicality of what Steve did. I've studied with one of Steve's teachers and really enjoy his playing.
Let me just say that I love Steve Smith's playing and as a duet, this was highly musical. But as a cutting contest- Good Lord! Smitty owned him! Steve knows it and he's such a great drummer he just appreciates the skill and beauty. All great people and musicians have that attitude.
@DougDinsdale Pure phenomenal perfection. Smitty didn't own anybody, he is simply faster. Buddy always wanted to be the fastest but maybe Smitty and Dennis Chambers are faster than him. I wouldn't want Smitty playing w/Led Zeppelin. Between those 2, My choice would be Steve Smith. I've seen and met them both and I've seen Chambers up close in a club setting.
Steve Smith had hair?? This clip speaks to the beautiful truth that all great drummers have their own unique style and sound.... Find yours today. If this message has touched you, send a donation to.... Me
I see so much Tony Williams in both of these guys.

I love how they listen to each other and finish the idea of the other one. Thats called music. Not just spewing all the licks you worked on.

Smitty is about as respectable as any gospel drummer i've seen, too bad he degenerates into monster rolls like they all do.
