The ending they filmed originally was for Ted to join the other priest on the ledge (that we saw in the 1st scene), to contemplate suicide, he says: 'move up a bit'. The writers opted this was in bad taste as Dermot Morgan had just died, so opted for a montage of clips of the best of to make this ironic and fitting tribute. This is noted in the Father Ted script book.

I think they originally had an ending where Ted and the depressed priest from the beginning were both on the window ledge of a building, about to jump off. After Dermot Morgan died, they changed it to the end that was broadcast.

Yeah, The origonal ending of this episode and the series was for Ted to commit suicide with Kevin when he realised he would be on the island forever but because Dermot died before it aired, they never showed that ending and changed it to a montage and Ted saying goodnight.
