LOL richardmasudsley77 bitter much? I understand. C++ is losing ground and it is a hard pill to swallow. There are times I miss writing Assembly.... but not very often. I have to give you KUDOS on this LCARSx32. It's tres cool.

Programmers who are far smarter than you (dickardmaudsley) created higher languages from lower languages for a reason. You probably don't have the patience or brains to understand why. You simply jumped on the C wagon like countless other fools who take pride in writing 100,000 lines of code for no reason. Fake elites are obvious.

@krehator1 I don't get it, so I learned C++ and later C# and now I'm a fool? I'm not criticizing basic, I don't even care about it and nor do I care about any other languages, even though I know some more like pascal, python and basic on primitive levels.

If you learn VB, then probably you're an enthusiast writing something like this for small profit or just fun, and if you learn C then you're probably going to be working in a big team, writing something like an OS or program. No one's a fool.

Can I just say, I love LCARSx32.

Been using it since it was released and I love all the updates you do. Glad to see you still working on it.

It's the first LCARS shell I have ever used that was great to use, and not bulky or cumbersome. Light on resources, great on my touchscreen computer (see my video response) authentic LCARS rules followed perfectly. Thanks again!

How much did this cost to produce? Especially the touchscreen version... I don't know much about PC shells but this looks like it was expensive to make.

@leeham991: All it cost was time. Lots of time. Microsoft makes Visual Basic available free (Express Edition), but I use the professional version that I got for free through Microsoft's DreamSpark website (thanks M$!). It runs on virtually any PC that can handle Win98 or newer. Touch screen is optional :)

Sure, C++ and other low level languages can develop a simple "Hello World" app as fast as VB, but once you get to any kind of scale, the differences are enormous. If I was making LCARS x32 in C++, I'd still be working on the first screen. And voice commands?! Forget about it.

given your 24KB hello world, what are your system requirements for lcars x32? I mean, really. I bet they're something equaly bloated. A better peice of software could be done for a 386.

@richardmaudsley77 If you can't write it in binary, then shut the flac up :) I can adequately use over a dozen languages. I'm adept in six of those. One of them is VB. I can also tell that you, Richard, are not a career programmer. If you were, you'd understand that the programmer does not always have the choice of language used. A good one knows enough to keep his or herself in the game. I'd never hire you as a programmer, simply because your prejudice could cost my firm a client.

By the way, is it possible to use this as a shell replacement in Windows XP so that the explorer.exe won't be loaded on booting?

@79Yamato: In XP, yes. In Vista or 7, no (because of UAC, working on a work around). If you go into "Settings" then "Startup", there's an option to set x32 as your shell. Explorer is never loaded when this option is used. DON'T DO IT IN VISTA OR WIN7!

You may need to download MS Speech (available on the download page under "Files Needed to Run LCARS x32"). If it still doesn't work after that, post the error message on the website's forums and we'll try to figure it out. -Ray

I could see this going so far if it has touch screen support and everything is complete. Maybe even a plugin option similar to the Black Box shell. I can see it now.
