  • This is weird and odd. There is nobody good playing this on a piano.

  • its odd that She was swindled out of her money and years after her death they started releasing videos of her .Talk of vultures taking advantage of a performer.but thats the way show business went and I'm sure still is

  • @MrStoney2011 You are so right. I did a bit of work in the biz, just a little bit. a brutal business.

  • ES MI CANCIÓN PREFERIDA! ( is my favorite song!)

  • OMFG! loved it!

  • THE WOMAN I LOVE!!

  • @SahaWhe

  • @SahaWhe Why , I could'nt post my comment ???

  • hail yo Lady Day / i just simply adore her / she was the quintisential torch singer / no question/ Nobody had a voice like Billie Holiday/ when she sang you felt her pain right down to your soul/ thats why she will always be the greatest torch singer of all time/ i am a blues singer and Billie was such an inspiration to me /

  • marvellous

  • Hello, Lady Day, this is Roger Houston, the house bassist at the Talking Stick in Venice Beach, California, and you and I just had brunch together. You were delightful company. Thank you, rh

  • Icona del jazz con il sax di Ben Webster

  • 5 people worship the Devil.

  • how do i kno all these words i haven't heard this song in ages i guess it just sticks with you

  • I'm singing this song for my UNI course and I didn't know Billie did a cover of it.. my life is complete! I love her, she is my life.

  • FORBLØFFENDE!!!

  • Eu simplesmente amo essa voz, e a forma em que a notas saem reverberando no meio ambiente. Linda..

  • I think a short part of this song (the introduction and first bars) was added in "the godfather part 1"...I absolutely love billie holiday and classic jazz

  • SENSACIONAL !!!

  • come on I love this song!!!!! pls never take it away from me. This is THE MOST ROMATIC SONG E V E R!!!!

  • This is some Bioshock stuff.

    Wait, no.

Bioshock is some Billie Holiday's stuff.

I'm just 20, and i'm amazed how "Music" these days have come to such a perverted end.

This girl, along with some other masters, have created a shelter for all of those who still enjoy a nice, constant flow of smoothness...

Not everyone understands this kind of music, it's... a Spiritual thing.

  • @BluelightSpike

    ...a soul thing...:)

  • @BluelightSpike I also knew this music thanks to Bioshock

  • ..meravigliosi ricordi legati a questa canzone..cantata con l'unico uomo capace di rubarmi il cuore..

  • Billie sets me up for the Prez's knockout punch.

  • legend

  • My grandfather worked in New York city at a hotel as a bellhop where he met a lot of celebrities of that time. He met Billie several times & he snuck in to see her perform while on duty & he saw her beat up 2 soldiers because they were talking & laughing during her performance!!! Now that's a woman after my own heart. I'm 33 but It doesn't matter how old you are if you can appreciate good music & this is one of the best!!!

  • words can't describe how amazing this women's voice is!!! i get hypnotized!

  • Will sing this one for you Frankie -- at my gig today. although nobody can deliver this message like Ms. Billie Holiday....

  • Billie's voice is filled with such heartfelt emotion. That's something inimitable and what makes her special.

  • The Gershwin brothers wrote music from the heart.

All we have now is music from the loins or from the spleen.

Lady Day's story is a cautionary tale, making it all the more amazing such a flower of a voice bloomed in the mess that was her life.

  • @PacRimJim "from the loins" lmao

  • none of this new mainstream music will EVER be better than Billie Holiday!! <3

  • i'd give anything to see her preform live

  • This is music when it was still music.

  • Each and all are special in their own rite ... Choosing the better is like choosing a favorite child ... Not and Never Possible ... !!!

This might explain why I've been listening to Blues and Jazz since I was 13 years young ...

  • Billie Holiday and Lester Young are so great together. Anytime those two were together you knew it was going to be something good.

  • Even at 22 Im such a huge fan of the Late greats like Miss Billie Holiday. This is real music.

  • I enjoy Miss Holiday's style of music.

  • Truely beautiful

  • 4 people who disliked this are probably Enclave troops.

  • the 4 who disliked this must have been tone deaf! How sad :(

  • Love it! <3

  • Billie Holiday She was very very Different, in her day! No one. in 2010, has the balls to be different we are all the same We are cowards!! We let people tell us we cant wish people a " merry Christmas" LIke its using bad language or something!!! WEll MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ! COWARDS!!!

  • Chrisette Michelle has a voice like Billie way better than some of the singers now( just my opinion) Look her up. she has a Jazzy & Blues voice . But there's only one Billie!

  • what a voice , what a woman !

  • WOW... I wish I was around in that time period. Such great music.

  • Good stuff.

  • She is such a beautiful woman. I say "is" because she will forever live on, as will her lovely voice. I'm seventeen and prefer this music over any of the popular music today. This IS music. The other stuff is a fad. Billie, you're gorgeous! <3

  • Her voice is incredible. She is incredible. Everything about her is incredible. I could just die she's so...marvelous. Too marvelous for words (ha-ha), really.

  • talk to me billie, urthe most baby !

  • Cancion muy bonita

  • Beautiful...for me Billie, (as a vocalist), is second only to Dinah Washington..

  • the song i love

  • man, this song makes me wish i was in a dark underground jazz club, with a cigar in my mouth listening to her croon.....

  • @AmberHopePierce I smoke " pipe " . Cigar and cigarret makes bad health. In that imaginary " jazz club " , you must drink something ! ( Arqueiroify - from Brazil )

  • This sounds a tad fast to me, I am sure she did this slightly slower..

  • This is beautiful.

  • I feel so terrible for her on wikipedia it said she was in alot of abusive relationships r.I.p Billy holiday I am sure there's a man for you up in heaven :)

  • The word "perfect" is so overused....Except in the case of Lady Day...It is like the word was created just for her........

  • If only I was born in 1915...I'd been that man for her.

  • What a voice, what a lady, that Lady Day

  • What a sweet angel.

  • cria vergonha na cara seu bacalhau inrustido!

  • Lady Day is the epitomy of true jazz with the blues. She is the final word on love and heartache absolute. She lived these lyrics. If you haven't already, read her biography.

  • come on people write something.... this is a bautiful love song .. I do not want to be the only one to make a comment :S

  • Una voce senza tempo. Sublime.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!

MY BESTIE FOR 32YRS JUST PASSED

SHE HAD SUCH A NICE VOICE..AND SHE SANG THIS SONG OFTEN..

    THIS ONES FOR YOU SHIRLEY

  • @mamastears I'm really sorry for you loss.

  • beautiful

  • I don't find "smoke gets in your eys" sung by billie holiday

can you public a video with this song please?

  • Billie you were the best, no-one comes close

  • Amazin how music has gotten so weak & meaningless compared to the early 1900's, u wud think after 100 years the music would improve. Oh well, guess thats why we have these classics

  • @MrGuinii amen amen. I would love to know what happened to good music. I guess it went and flew off somewhere when all of these great artists went to heaven. oh well :0 but ur right. that's why we hve the classics :)

  • @keda96 Yer man, i fink it was less money driven back then, it was more expressive rather then look good and make money. Still its good that so many more people are able to live off their music now, even if it is crappy imo

  • @MrGuinii lol yea, i guess that's true. But, there are some pretty good artists out there too like Angel Taylor and Michael Buble. But it is good for those ppl to be able to live off of something they love doing :

  • @keda96 Yer man, ma mum loves Michael Buble, hes good, i aint heard Angel Taylor tho ill chek her. Yo keep an eye on my channel, im gonna have some real talented artists up from the UK soon, one of them is working on a music video right now, the others a female singer, its more modern tho but the melodies and flows are creative as hell. lemme kno wot u fink

  • @MrGuinii awesum i will :)

  • hear every word that flies out of her mouth, with all this blue beauty is really an experience, sure, she can make you cry, of sadness or happiness, but always is an very strong emotion.

  • Lovely :)

Can't beat this kind of music.

Laura marling singing goodbye england reminds me of this. you all should give it a listen. maybe you disagree..oh well :)

  • her voice is so unique, such a revelation; yet it feels like a punch in the gut. knocks me on my ass every time.

  • me encanta, tambien me gusta con caetano veloso

  • Perfection. Billie had such a troubled life, but her legacy will live forever.

  • Grande Billie immortale la sua voce

  • Does anyone know what key this is in?

  • I would give a million beyonces, lady gagas and whoever else for one Billie Holiday

  • @ZClipze for Billie Holiday and Ella Fiztgeralds...

  • @ZClipze ..lady gaga?beyonce? are this girls SINGERS??? no........I want Billie Holiday too....I miss her...

  • @ZClipze I agree fully with you, Billy is the best!

  • @ZClipze I fully agree with you. Billy Holiday is the best!

  • @ZClipze niggard! If possible, I'd throw away any beyonces and lady gaga available for one Billie. Bye

  • @ZClipze Who you tellin'?!?! :)

  • @ZClipze Amen

  • how can you put lady gaga and billie in the same phrase???????

  • @zuzajaro Actually Lady Gaga has a fine jazz voice. YouTube has a video of her singing "Orange Colored Sky." She has the chops.

  • @zuzajaro lady gaga's voice is actually more fit for jazz than you know. Look up her earliest music, you'll be surprised.

  • @SamsoniteMan4

Who give two hoots in hell about Lady Gaga's supposed chops. Its all about Billie from Baltimore here and now!

  • @ZClipze amen :)

  • On cloud of thunder the sole does fear the man we seek to love.

although as we seek to find the lonely hart is fearless

  • Hoy cumplirias 92 años!!!!!!!!!!Gracias por lo q nos dejastes;descansa en paz Billie.Ganastes la eternidad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love her voice

  • obviously billy holiday is black as in black american a people of many shades

  • Billie Holiday sings it very beautiful, but also listen how beautiful Kate Bush did this song with her fantastic voice.

That is how Gershwin would have wanted it.

  • @pcvl6 Etta James' version is the best

  • @pcvl6 kate bush did this version. wow. let me check it out.

  • what ethnicity is billie holiday?

  • @sailorpunkgirl She was african american aka black

  • I am from the deep south, and LOVE my trips to New Orleans just to hear some of her old stuff. MAYBE one day , I will have someone to share my passion with. lol Dance or find that small dark spot. lol

  • Thanks for posting this classic.

  • i s that Lester Young on Tenor?

  • @trisax2 Yes, that is The Prez, Lester Young on tenor! That beautiful tone is unmistakable! Lester was the man who inspired me to pick up saxophone about 5 years ago. I guess that's not likely to happen to somebody my age considering I'm not even 30 yet, but Lester will always be my top man!

  • i love it as much as ella's interpretation; they both perceive it from such a different place. Both Billie, Ella and of course mr Gershwin are a true gift for our ears!!

  • i love ella she's great i'm from algeria and i'm fascinated with her

  • exquisite! magnifieant smooth and warming song i like it! love the lyrics !

and of course marvellous voice .. thnks for sharing : )

  • great!!!!!

  • meravigliosa e ta tanto che la cercavo.

  • "The Man I Love" <~~~ This was composed by Gershwin wasn't it?

  • @gray70 Indeed it was. I just found this recording by chance since I gave it a try on the piano. This is by far the best version I've heard.

  • Yes , yes and YES! GERSHWIN was the best ever... Billie was AMAZING

  • indeed

  • la regina mi emoziona come non mai...

  • l'amour a l'état brute !!!!!!!!!

    du bonheur....

    qu'elle voie mervelleuse...

  • I'm 27, not from that era, but i love old stuff like this, her and nat king cole are so full of soul, their words were so believable, i wish ppl sang like this now :)

  • Im your age, and I agree with ya!

  • Nobody will ever sing like her, never!!!!She is the only one to make us feel and understand what love and pain is all about.

  • @antoniodauar concordo com a primeira parte..

  • @antoniodauar WTF I THOUGHT BILLIE HOLIDAY WAS A GUY

  • when i was young i remember hearing this song....62 now..... nobody can sing this song but billie ....

  • А мне нравится здесь! Kate Bush & Larry Adler - The Man I Love

  • Billie is fantastic! But this song is particularly good by Caetano Veloso, brazilian musician. Hear it! :)

  • I didn`t like it with him... I don`t know, it just sounds weird when a man sings it.

  • Listening to Billie Holiday sing this melodic tune, makes the time more tolerable... until he comes along

  • Ahhh, what a voice, just few have similar timbre!

  • Wait.. This is Ella Fitzgerald.. Isn't it?

  • Nevermind, it isn't. My bad. :)

  • Definately Billie Holiday

  • Yeah, haha! Sorry! :) Atleast I didn't say, "wait isn't this Britney Spears!" haha.

  • In a word...Beautiful.

  • best song i ever heard in my life

  • I love her voice, wow Billie Holiday for ever

    thanks for posting

  • Garndissima interprete!

  • I was about 17 years old when I heard this song on a record I had borrowed from a friend. It was my first encounter with both Billie Holiday and Lester Young. I was left in complete shock, tears running down my face. 33 years later, I still cry.

  • Her back up bands ALWAYS sound great like the BEST musicians wanted to work with her. Thanks for the post and thank you Lady Day.

  • That's because they are the BEST musicians of the time. Essentially, Billie Holiday's recordings from the '30s represent some of the most important "small combo" recordings of the swing era. With the exception of a few, all of the greatest musicians of the 30s are featured on her recordings from 1933-1942.

  • Man, I would have loved to have seen Billie Holiday perform live... born forty years too late :(

  • Um. Sorry. Put down instead of up. That's awkward.

  • It doesn't get any better than this.

  • Dulcísimo...me encanta!
