@ 1:24 why does the left engine look different from the right. I mean the spiral in the middle can be seen in the right engine but on the left all you can see is a white blob. Are they two different engines or something?
back in the days, planes must have had a minimum of 3 engines for long haul flights over the big oceans, so in case of engine failure there would still be 2 remaining. but nowadays engines are more reliable so planes like the a330, b767, b777 can easily cross oceans with 2 engines
I'm a big aviation enthusiast but I got a a question and please don't get mad at me I just want to learn this but whats the difference between a DC-10 and a MD-11? All I know is a KC-10
@BrandenTheAviator The MD-11 was in may respects a stretch version of the DC-10 (100,000lbs heavier), although it was a 2-man cockpit versus the DC-10's 3. This aircraft was slowly phased out after Boeing purchased McDonnell Douglas in favor of the Boeing's 777, which is 100,000 lbs even larger with only two engines. My father was an airline pilot (Captain Hap Hazzard - no lie) in the 70s and flew the DC-10.
@OlegKostoglatov What's interesting about the tail engine is that it has almost the exact same dimesions as the fuselage of a DC-3. I always thought that was a great demonstration of how far the age of flight had progressed. The engine is also positioned on a slight upward slant as tests showed that the nose of the plane would cut off airflow to an engine positioned level during takeoff. That said, the 10 was plagued with internal explosions in the tail engine during takeoff.
@mrceebees14 Yes it was. Was always fun to watch the passengers' expressions when his name was announced as their captain. I spent many trips as a kid riding in the cockpit of a DC-10. After takeoff on a trip from Mexico City to Chicago in '74, he showed me how to punch radio frequencies of ground stations (before age of GPS) into the auto pilot. For 3 hours, I used a map and flew the plane until 30mi. from ORD (with 3 pilots watching me). Some of the best memories of my life.
@BrandenTheAviator MD-11 is larger, more efficient engines, full digital two crew cockpit, longer range, quieter. the winglets on the wingtips helps reduce induced drag and hence improve aerodynamic efficiency.
Well the DC 10 was anyhow but design work on those technically began before McDonnell got in on it, but you're right it was badly designed and not just the infamous cargo hatch either. To me that third engine looks like an afterthought. The DC 9 also had a few problems, there was an Air Canada flight in 1983 where something in the washroom caught on fire and spread up the wall and into the ceiling, the plane burned down on the runway after an emergency landing in Cincinatti.
Hey Guys, i am going to miami in next couples of weeks, and i can choose one of two tickets, one is flying with MD11 KLM,and the second one is B747 air france, which one is better? thanks for advise!
@hellview96x Delta got rid of their MD-11's a long time ago, the only airlines that fly them would be KLM, World Airways, UPS, FedEx, Aeroflot Cargo and Ethiopian Cargo
@hellview96x FedEx NO LONGER operates any 747 model, their flagships are B777F's and MD-11F's
Delta NO LONGER operates ANY MD-11's, their widebodied fleet now consists of B747-400's (ex Northwest), A330-200/300's (ex Northwest), B777-200ER/LR and B767-300EM/ER and B767-400ER's

@TTDMFfreaknew Actually B707 has worse death rate than DC-10. After problems were fixed it has been actually safer plane than MD-11.
