  • every one has memories.

  • Don Williams, The gentle Giant is a favorite country artist of mine. I love that syrup in his voice. I only listen to the classic artists like Don. The 21 century performers feature some that are authentic but others are from the north or don't pick as well.

  • If you go to one of his concerts today, close your eyes and you can be taken back to 1978. The man comes on stage, sits on that same tan chair, strums and sings. His voice is clear and sharp as it was in '78. He captivates his crowd and you would think they passed out lyrics to everyone. as they all sing along. we saw Don a few months back, and will go again the next time in town.

  • i started listening to don williams when i was a kid, i am now 37 and stiil love it, if you get the chance to see this man live go for it, he is awsome live

  • 好好聼!!!

  • I remember my dad singing this song after a few drinks..

  • When I lived in Cameroon, Africa, in 1984, Don Williams was on posters everywhere - sometimes next to Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. I shared a ride with the USA Ambassador to Cameroon... he had been bewildered in the same way, and said he found Williams number and called him to tell him about his popularity. His sense was that Don lost interest when he realized all the music was pirated and he'd never see a penny of royalties. Africa was pre-youtube free.

  • When I first heard this song,I thought the first line said,'when I was a kid a marine used to put me to bed,my dad was 1st division USMC IN the Pacific and a baptist deacon,so I thought every line was sung to me,I was later 3rd Mar.Div.USMC 1969 Vietnam from Alabama...... so I guess... it was for good ole boys like me ... SEMPER FI

  • I sang this song to my daughter for almost 2 years every night to put her to sleep... She is almost 7 now and still has a copy of the CD in her CD player next to her bed... Good stuff...

  • He could sing the encyclopedia - and it would be wonderful!

  • This man sings the only songs that I will sing at the top of my lungs everytime they come on my radio.

  • This song brings back everything from my childhood- the smells, the tastes, the bumps, the bruises and the laughs but most of all the tears. RIP mom

  • if i ever have a hard day or a bad fight or brake up i always cum back to this so the whole time my baby was sick i listen to don

  • real singing, it should be banned and bring on gaga and britney

  • Such a smooth easy voice, nice to listen to, a real song that touches you!

  • Don Williams- No Frills: Just great voice, great songs.

  • I miss real country music so bad, Don Williams is one of countries true hero's.

  • COME BACK DON!!!! PLEASE!!

  • Not all country singers are ignorant populist flag waving dipsticks. Some have a literate gentle heart.

  • i dont know why i still listen to this song, but i just love Don's beautiful voice. i didnt know country music until i fell in love with a young man from Oklahoma who was in the army stationed in Iraq. he taught me his love of Don Williams expecially this song Good Ole Boys Like Me. he said it was so like him. my soldier and i didnt make it, our marriage didnt take place. i come here i listen to this song and i cry about what couldve been, i still love my soldier & i believe he still loves me <3

  • @septsong1 LOVE will come again, make no doubt about it.

  • If you do not like this song you may be a pussy! Think about it!

  • I feel so sorry for those 24 out of 1 Milion plus

  • Don Williams is one of the legends in country music. This is his best song.

  • hello i bought my first don williams album back in 1975 he is still the king back then it was the gentle magic of don williams so nice to see that a 15 year old fan of don is wise too the game i must admit i love his stetson too

  • The mellow balader

  • I got to see him back in 78/79 round about then he was in his prime days and guess what, he sat right there on that stool and sang his songs. He is one of greatest of the genre.

  • country misic will always live as long as we (the young) generations keep all this kind of music alive.

  • 23 people need to get their heads examined

  • I started listening to Don Williams 15 years back. I am really fascinated in his songs. Hailing from a village in Kerala State of south India, it is really amazing that I became a fan of Don. It shows that his music has reached in a far of place beyond US. Great singer indeed.

  • I went and listened to this man sing at our country fair years ago, and since then I have been hooked on his songs. He has a lot of good ones. I'm looking for the coffee black one and I can't find it. It reminds me of my Dad.

  • @jbranstetter04 Coffee Black, cigarette, start this day like all the rest????SOME BROKEN HEARTS!!

  • The song was written by Bob McDill, who also wrote "Amanda," which Don Williams also recorded. A later version of "Amanda" by Waylon Jennings won a CMA award.

  • One of the greatest country songs ever.

  • It sounds so sad when he sings "Hank and TN"

  • @Otulissa3 - He's referring to Tennessee Williams, not the state (TN), i.e. "Those Williams boys", Hank Williams and Tennessee Williams.

  • @Phase42 Oh, I didn't know, thanks for clarifying that.

  • @Phase42 duh

  • @LisaShea1987 - You may have noticed I was replying to somebody who had misunderstood the lyrics.

  • I saw Don about 4 years ago and the whole concert was just like this ... he sat on a stool and played the music awesome Singer The Best in my eyes

  • @pamyp1969 same here, but it was about 7 years ago at Billy Bob's in Texas....great, great show.

  • saw this man in concert a few years back, one and half hours of pure country music,, sat on a stool and just played,,amazing.

  • Just realize I've got tears rolling down my face....gettin old and feeling lost in the world I see around me.

  • @tas7161 I can relate. Glad to see I am not the only one. I listened to this song just today back to back several times in the truck on a great cd. He is great.

  • @tas7161 I can relate. Glad to see I am not the only one. I listened to this song just today back to back several times in the truck on a great cd. He is great.

  • @tas7161 I'm right there with ya buddy.

  • perfect country music just perfect perfect gentle music

  • perfect country music

  • yall better see him this year. He is not getting any younger and has come outta retirement already. He got sick last year and had to reschedule some shows. His live performance is awesome. The smaller the venue the better. I hope yall get to see the Gentle Giant this year.

  • That is one style of singing I enjoy which was quite popular in the 1970's and 1980s. Slow and steady as if he is just talking directly to you as the listener.

  • Me: Ya like country?

    Person 1: Hell yeah!

    Me: Ya like George Jones?

    Person 1: Who?

    Me: You don't like country.

  • No, it's not too late...it will be young people like you who will turn this country around to be what it was when I was your age.

Senator Jim DeMint is proposing an amendment called CUT [spending] CAP, BALANCE [national budget] PLEDGE. Check it out...there are people fighting for us and our way of life. Lin

  • I am a huge fan of Don Williams- I saw him in Las Vegas 1992, and a few years later here in Australia, in concert. Spellbounding stuff. I like nearly all

his songs, but I think ( and I believe Don agrees), that this is his very best

song / performance. Thanks for posting.

" Music allows the heart to sing, and the soul to have wings "

    Truebeliever43

  • I grew up listening 2 ths song....Love u Don....

  • Music like this touches a chord in the human soul. Pure Country.

  • they just dont make music like this anymore its a shame.

  • I had the privilege of seeing Don perform in Thunder Bay Canada last nite (17/06/2011)

He sounded and looked better than ever. Still tugs at the heartstrings and draws a tear & smile. I hope I have the opportunity to see him again!

  • Is he still performing?

    He's now, what, 72? (2011)

And if he does, can we expect him in Europe?

  • Don Williams, Ray Price and Marty Robins, doesn't get any better than that!!

  • i want sideburns like Don !

  • Wonderful song written by the genius Bob McDill. He also wrote "Gone Country" for Alan Jackson where made an ironic comment on the "Urban Cowboy" trend ...

    Don Williams i-s this song!

  • There is something definitely wrong with anyone who doesn't like this song!

  • I remember as a kid lying in bed back in the 70's listening to a little AM transistor radio. "WMAQ is gonna make you rich!" Don's voice never failed to relax me.

  • I saw Don a few years ago and it was better by far than any other concert I've ever seen. His music is pure, honest, and simple. He is one of a kind and I am thankful to have had his music in my life while I was growning up!

  • I gotta agree with Benwade on this. There is very little true talent left in music today.....in any genre.

Today, you can substitute talent with effects, music can be overdubbed....all you gotta be is pretty.

Don, and others of his era actually had to work to be the artists that they were.

  • i cant believe no one has posted "do i look like a daddy to you"

does anyone out there have it ?

  • They don't make music like this anymore, with such amazing lyrics. I'd drop kick Gaga to get to Don Williams any day!

  • Comment removed

  • Happy Birthday Don Thanks for all the great music....one of the best nights of my life listening to you sing this song as the September breezes gently blew thru the grandstands at the Wayne County Fair in Wooster Ohio.....Yea I grew up listening to John R and Hank Williams too

  • Happy Birthday Don

  • Don Willams is just a good singer. I remember the year that he had the number two selling hit and Milsap had the number one selling hit. Neither one won squat at the CMA's.

  • The gentle Giant!

don't make hím like this anymore!

    Wolf

  • The lyrics to this song are so very perfect! I hope that everyone who listens to this song really pays attention to the lyrics. Thhis is as good as it gets!

  • What do you do with good ol' boys like me????

  • Excellent voice!

  • I am 15 and I'd rather listen to good ol' Don anyday rather than that new mainstream pop/country. This world is going under and it's just getting worse.

  • @WVUFAN20123 i like your style

  • @WVUFAN20123 THAT IS AWESOME, STICK WITH THE GOOD OLE OUTLAWS.....THAT IS COUNTRY, WAYLON, WILLIE, CASH, D A C, HAGGARD, EVEN CONWAY TWITTY AND RONNIE MILSAP ARE AWESOME, OH YEA........EDDIE RABBITT WAS BADASS

  • @WVUFAN20123 No, it's young people like you who will turn it around. I am 67, a retired teacher. Right now I am working to get everybody I know to go to Sen. Jim DeMint's site- he is trying to get an amendment through that is for CUT, CAP, and BALANCE...spending in government. We still have time... GOD bless...

  • @WVUFAN20123 yep young fella; but those like you will defeat these criminals ; dead in the tracks.

  • @WVUFAN20123 Well you BETTER SEE HIM IN CONCERT! :)) I am 39 yrs going on 40 soon and I regret not seeing him in concert... :( Hes has plent of 2011 dates left

  • @paintballme2 Yeah I'm probably going to go see him in Pigeon Forge or in Arizona with my dad who's wanted to see him his whole life too.

  • @WVUFAN20123 Me too bud. This stuff is the best.

  • @WVUFAN20123 lol the world is going under not because of new country music.. if you ask me it's from the damn rap and all that bull shit... some of the new country is good... not Don, or Hank, or Waylon, Or Willie good but it's decent

  • @WVUFAN20123 god bless ya son(im 15 too haha)

  • @WVUFAN20123 It will never go under as long as people like you heed the call....listen....be inspired....produce....There is good out there...you just have to seek it....see it....find it....all is well.

  • @MTangalin02 ...and create the good yourself.

  • @WVUFAN20123 It's all about perspective and the way that you see things from your own point of view, from where you stand in the world today. Take another look in a different light. Sometimes things seem to fall apart before the can come together for good. Have a look around at integration, friendships, relationships all crossing many many boundaries. Look at the way music unites across colour race or creed. Keep your eyes on LOVE wherever you find it. Peace.

  • Whenever I'm out, I play this song as a tribute to my dear old dad, RIP.

I grew up listening to Don Williams (among others,) and I'm glad to still have the real music in me today.

  • They didn't call him the Gentle Giant for nothing. Don Williams is a true country singer!

  • songs like this make me turn off the radio..now I tape my records ,,and listen to this and other honest men .thank you Don...

  • don Williams voice attracts your attention even if you don't want to.his trucks flow with silence, sweetness, calmness and all toned.i think we miss that in the current music

  • Don was one of the first artists I remember as a child. Still love his music!

  • One of the greatest ,because ,he touches all all my senses with his music

  • My father-in-law served in the Army with Don Williams. Said he used to sing to the guys but never thought he was really good. My father-in-law said he was a very humble man. That humbleness definitely comes through in his voice. Always a pleasure to listen to.

  • @mustangannie1965 My father past 3yr ago. I heard him play this late at night when him and my mom would dance after we kids were put to bed. I still could sing it from memory to this day. Thanks Dad

  • To this day, when I hear Don Williams voice it just cuts through the crud and goes right to my soul...I'm not a huge country music fan. Good music transcends categories. The simple, genuine quality of his lyrics matched with the smoothness of his delivery speaks to me every time I hear him.

  • Guitarist Danny Flowers was such a good fit in Dons Band........Always amazes me how the right people get together........Somehow they always find each other.

  • Great song...it brings back good childhood memories.

  • i am 19 and i love this kind of music, i cant listen to the new stuff. i dont understand why more kids my age dont listen to this kind of music, he speaks the trutand so do many more that came from the 70's and 80's. There is no music that is better then this stuff right here.

  • @robdaub1 ..........You're 19 and you already have this kind of perception? Somebody raised you right....LOL.

  • @robdaub1 The 'new' country of today is POP country, most of the country you hear now from the 70s and 80s was POP COUNTRY at that time as well, only difference is its 30 years older now. Same with the 60s, 50s, etc.

  • Keep listening to the good stuff, don't let anyone tell ya different!

  • Keep listening to the good stuff, don't let anyone tell ya different!

  • the 19 people who dont like this will learn to disrespect my family,he`s my cousin.

  • BOB McDill sure wrote a great song when he wrote this one and i cannot think of any one who could have done it better than don

  • give me some Hank Jr., Waylon, and some Don Williams pretty good group there lol

  • Comment removed

  • This my favorite Don Williams song. He's got the smoothest voice since Jim Reeves.Love them both.Should have been a hall of famer along time ago glad to see he finally made it!!

  • Country went bad when it started being cool to be country. Everything after that just comes across as fake. That whole demographic is nothing more than a bunch of rich kids spending daddy's money on jacked up trucks, booze, and bitches. And the music today matches that inauthenticity.

Don Williams, on the other hand, comes across as achingly honest. His music isn't about being cool in a four wheel drive, it's about people. I think that's what makes his music timeless.

  • @Benwade90 I somewhat agree with you. I still think there are authentic country artists today. I also think every generation argues that there generation lacks what other previous generations had.

  • @Benwade90 amen..I've never heard it put any better... Don is the man.

  • @Benwade90 Well said! I remember as a kid my mom's old record player playing Great Country songs. At that time if you were country, or redneck , or a hick someone had to tell you! Cause to most of the people around us it was they way we lived....

  • @Benwade90 When I saw your post I could not click " VOTE UP" quick enough!

  • @Benwade90 Couldn't have said it better.

  • @Benwade90 Yep, Gretchen Wilson, Big And Rich, and the like are examples of this crap

  • @Benwade90 You hit it right on the head. Hopefully one day the kids will tire of jacked up truck, booze, and

computer generated music. To listen to Don is to go back to those peaceful places he sings about.

  • miss you crocker williams

  • love u so much

  • This song takes me back to the rural areas of KZN where my parents were born and all of my cousins live today....no matter where I am they are always on my mind...thanks Mr Williams...when are you going to tour South Africa, especially Durban we love you there

  • i love this mans voice a legend for sure god love ya man

  • I think about this song when I kiss my little boy good night. I realize that there is beer (not gin) on my breath. The part about washed in the blood... gets me every time. How did this guy stay so normal in the music biz? Love this song.

  • Ive never heard this song without it giving me goosebumps ... love it.

  • When I was a teenager my dad introduced me to Don Williams backstage @ Six Flags of Texas Music Mill. Probably the kindest singer/songwriter in the business.

He took his time with me for a autograph. As a young kid with the musical talent of the drums, he asked me if I wanted to go up stage and play a song with him. I politely said no, too many people in the crowd. He gave the signature smile and said I know what you are talking about " I think about that every time I walk out on stage".

  • hes my cousin

  • he staggerd a little as he walked out the door

  • I literally listen to this song over and over and over again.....thanks for sharing...

  • leroy, go fuck yourself

  • 19 more communist

  • Classic! I grew up hearing Don Williams in my childhood home and bought his stuff when I got on my own. When I read Louis L'Amour, this is the voice I hear in my head. Smooth, Southern, Sexy. :)

  • This is as good as it gets. "Great" is an often misused words to describe a performance or performer - but not in DW's case. He is up with with Hank Sr.

  • I'd like to know if this was Charleston, SC with Milsap in the late 70's in a small auditorium, if so I might have been there. He's always been a favorite.

  • Perfection!! So smooth you would never think this was live...lyrics are awesome too just a well written song..like all of his music

  • There's only a few country singers who can sing this well live these days. That was the days before ear monitors and lip synching, haha. Now all you have to be is good looking to be a country singer.

  • I love this song. I could listen to it over and over. So smooth...

  • yeah.its a shame there arent any singers left like this.im glad i was born in the seventies.a true gentleman.

  • Don, I too can still hear the soft southern winds in the live oak trees.

  • 19 people r not gentle

  • Thank you so much Tranquility for posting this one, it is one of my all time favorite songs and yes I would agree with previous posters, Don Williams is an artist often overlooked by the industry and the media. In my eyes he has been a fantastic artist, always a gentleman who never received the recognition he deserved, but to be honest I don't think he ever wanted the "superstar" status or lifestyle anyways.

  • Is there a video on this song?

  • We are losing countrys great singers.I miss them all. They are THE BEST.

  • This just might be the greatest country song ever written. It certainly has to be at

least in the Top 10. What a classic !!! And Don's delivery is SO great. The lyrics are

a LOt deeper than most music these days. This was written by Bob McDill, right?

Anyone familiar with his tunes ?

  • I completely agree with you 1959hogryder. I just love this man's voice & havea good number of his' CD's.The so called "MUSIC INDUSTRY" is a law unto itself. iT'S ALL ABOUT SOUNDS AND GIMMICKS and they think we love it .THE FILM INDUSTRY i think has a better feel for a decent singer and a song. Thanks to YOU TUBE and the people who upload we get to hear the best. THANKS TRANQUILITY 12

  • 18 people are not good 'ole boys like Don Williams

  • Don Williams was my dad's favorite country singer. I remember hearing his music on car trips to Oklahoma and Texas. Great memories. Thank you Don Williams for your wonderful gift, and your ability to touch the human heart.

  • @1959hogryder you are so right brother. i tell folks rascal flats aint country......you should see the disdain on their faces.

  • Don Williams vocals and personal integrity planted my feet solidly in country music.

  • how did country music go from artists like don, waylon, merle, hank, willie, johnny, and david alan coe to carrie, taylor, sugarland, lady antebellum and rascal fags?? it's sad that they even consider them in the genre. thank god we have jamey johnson now. he's headin to the top and bringing real country with him!!!!

  • @ohiochevyboy84 Amen. I don't know who Jamey Johnson is, but I'll give him a listen.

  • @MHM219 Jamey Johnson is literally the best country artist today. He covers several Waylon, Vern Gosdin, etc songs on his albums. The title track from "The Guitar Song" features Bill Anderson. On the new Waylon tribute album (Waylon: The Music Inside) he does an amazing cover of "This Time." Definitely check him out. @ohiochevyboy84 , I'm glad you think the same way I do.

  • Excellent song. Don's vocals are, as always, smooth and a joy to the ears.

  • 18 people are not Good Ole Boys!

  • 18 people a crazy! How can you not love this song?

  • agreed and its official Don Williams is the BEST. ALWAYS LOVED HIS MUSIC. ALWAYS WILL

  • Great song nuff said

  • I love Don's voice!!and have since 1972

  • What a beautiful story he's telling. Each time I listen to it I understand it a little more.

  • Bob McDill is the best songwriter to come outta Nashville. And Don Williams, well just look and listen for yourselves. I tried doing it like him, but realizing I could never do that, I made my own version of this song. It's on my page if you're interested. Otherwise, revel in the glory that is DW.

  • 1959hogryder - check out Cody Jinks...
