I think most users who have viewed this video already know the original of the great Neil Young and this doesn't mean that they cannot appreciate a lot also the Bowie version: free opinions!

Perhaps it's more prudent not to underestimate a priori...

As for my comment to which you're referring, unfortunately I don't recognize which of the 3 is because YT does not organize more in chronological order.

I like to think that unconsciously, Bowie got the the idea from the Pixies who covered it first (on the Velouria EP). After all, he covered the Pixies on the same album as this Neil Young cover. In any case, it's a fine cover of one of Neil Young's many masterpieces.

Bowie's voice is great b/c it's kinda deep (and in my own limited viewpoint) I can sing along a lot easier. There's just not anyone or anything cooler than David Bowie; it's just a fact.

Bowie and Young are not definable in one musical genre, both suspended between renewal's desire and past's nostalgia. David never indicates definite certainties, as an open mind, respectful: "For in truth, it's a beginning of nothing" declared in his album "Heathen". Perhaps, David performs subtly (with a vein of melancholy) not so much a love song, but the hidden questions that stand between dream and reality ... and emerges an outside-class of splendid Music.

As always, deeply studying his repertoire to be proposed,

Bowie said he chose this cover for various reasons, personalizing it in a perfect "Bowie-isation": a mental climate vague, uncertain, suspended, striated of obscurity, accentuated by "hard" sound of guitars, bass, drums. But, by the soft and emotional singing of David's voice, the original song is faithfully kept ... A powerful song !
