The original is a roma gypsy song. Boris Fomin and Konstantin Podrewski wrote a russian text for this song (Дорогой длинною / Dorogoy dlinnoyu) and Alexander Nikolayevich Vertinsky was the first who sang this song 1917. Eugene Raskin wrote the English version, which he published 1962 with his wife under the name "Gene & Francesca" the first time. Raskin gave the rights to The Limeliters, they published the English song in the same year.

So, the russian version is the first, and then came the cover in english, than in german, polish, spanish ... .
