This isn't even really an exaggeration either. With my debit card account, I've gone a few cents over my balance and gotten a huge Non-sufficient Funds fee slapped on it. And if you don't fix the issue promptly, they keep racking up the fees. I once had nearly 100 dollars in fees for going, like, 16 cents over, and this was all before I had any clue I'd even gone over. Faceless buttpirates is right.
