Don't just watch the film, read the play too guys! It's really awesome. Sanley's lines are so funny and ironical. And yeah, The film with Marlon Brando is much better :)
This is now available on DVD. It was long out of print when I uploaded it to Youtube, but now that it's available I've removed the other parts. If you want to watch the rest of it, please buy or rent it. There's a link in the description.
@Zilbernet ... dear friend, it's just too expensive for us to order it from the U.S. (we're in Southeast Asia), is there any other way to watch this movie online? Thanks.
That Jessica Lange found humor in Blanche's rather over the top monologues gives credit to a very intelligent actress. Even in 1951, NO ONE talked like Blanche: she knew she was "poetic" and could laugh at herself. It makes her portrayal even more moving. The little giggle she gives. . . . .perfect.
@JohnnyGNV Thanks! As far as films go, Lange's performance is the definitive one. I like Ann Margret's but Treat William's Stanley was a big disappointment. He spoke in a southern accent! Totally missed the analogy of Blanche vs. Stanley & the genteel cultured Confederacy vs. the crass vulgar Union that finally destroys it. The only reason this is not the definitive version is for the reasons given in veeezful's comment, which is actually MINE. I've no idea why it doesn't say shaiafication...
Unlike the 1951 Kazan production, which had irreproachably beautiful cinematography, this production is little more than a stage play with very simple, & unimpressive sets....I do not like all the soft greys, greens, light blues, lavenders & pastels... The pale and delicate colors seem to suit Blanche better than this supposedly grungy low rent district of New Orleans... Blanche doesn't look so out of place as she ought... But this is really just a play. Focus on the acting, not the atmosphere.
Jessica Lange's performance is superlative. Not as good as Vivien Leigh's. It is better. Lange captures Blanche's sweet & poetic nature, nervous fragility & vulnerability combined with haughty arrogance, her refined genteel graciousness, her intellectual superiority, her contempt & lust for Stanley & her final descent into demented melancholia, all with far greater authenticity & subtlety than Leigh & Lange never lets the slightest hint of a Yankee or English accent creep into the Mississippi..
@shaiaification THANK you for posting the only real comment worth reading. I just received a copy of the DVD for this version and I adore Jessica Lange but I can't seem to come to a conclusion as to whether or not this is truly the definitive version. There were previous interpretations of Blanche that were interesting, including the one Ann-Margret did several years prior to this. But I agree that Lange's performance always teeters on the edge of someone truly having a mental breakdown.
I actually like the first one better. You know, with Vivian Leigh and Marlon Brando. The whole reason I fell in love with it was from reading it in my English class. :)
The sad thing about this movie is that each character is just trying to imitate the original actors of the 1951 film. None of them are bringing anything original to the roles. I feel like I'm watching a high school production or something. Sad, because Lange, Baldwin and Lane are talented actors.
@ShireenLafferty Same. Tried to read it and got bored. Probably will be again when I try to watch it, but it's better than sitting there reading it. It's a play, isn't it? Should be acted and watched on stage, not read to begin with.
@ShireenLafferty : I am watching this because our community arts center is doing a performance of this and I am the lighting designer and sound engineer.
I never knew about this version. I assume this one is going to keep the ending more faithful to the play than the movie. But it's really brave of Baldwin to bother, I think. Like, great part or not, you know everyone is going to be thinking about Brando.
I love this play, and the Vivien Leigh movie is one of my favorites, but I've always wanted to see the newer version. Thank you so much for uploading!!
Its much better to watch and follow the script. Its like having a voice over.
