  • Awesome catch

  • Awsome vids Johnny, as always. How do you keep the bait in 25-40ft fly lining? I had the hardest time paddling and keeping the bait at a certain depth. It kept coming on the surface while I was paddling!

  • @fishsdonkayak I use the bigger size bait I have available anywhere from 8 to 12 inches long. I let it out 25 to 40 feet away from kayak. The bigger size bait tend to swim dipper than the smaller bait. Trolling at slower pace will also help to get that bait at proper depth.

  • Hero status! Kampay Pare! I will have to take a trip down to la jolla and fish with you. More power to you!

  • You're my hero!

  • im going fishing tomorrow in san diego do you have any tips on catching yellow tail

  • @Andrew2798, use live bait mackerel, follow instruction (check Zemanboy above) and work the areas along kelp beds, head up to 90 ft deep North West corner of the big white Hotel off La Jolla coast. Look for signs of marine activities.

  • @Andrew2798 Yellowtail fishing sucks right now dont get your hopes up

  • Johnny,

I have been fishing in San Diego for a while now but have only gone Kayak fishing in la jolla a couple of time. I was wondering what you meant by fly lining your mackerel instead of using a sinker? Id love you here what you have to say.

    Thanks,

    Adam

  • @Zemanboy11 , Fly lined live bait, the rig that I use is the main fishing line is tied to a heavy duty swivel then a 5 feet fluorocarbon leader attached to the swivel and a live bait hook 2/0 Gorilla by Owner hook is attached to the leader. Now the live bait is then pinned thru the upper lip and allowed to swim freely from 25 to 40 feet from the trolling vessel or Kayak. Note: NO Sinker used in fly line. TL, johnnyceviche

  • @jceviche Thanks, that makes a lot of sense and that is actually what I have been doing. Maybe ill see out on the water.

    Thanks, Adam

  • hey isnt it kind of boring be there alone find a buddy to go with

  • @oooosix Life is far too important a thing ever to think about the word "BORING". Even for one second. Please go out, do something you really enjoy and life won't be so boooring.

  • @oooosix

Kayak fishing is never boring, I gaurentee you :)

  • @jceviche Amen to that I go 6-8hrs out off Ft Lauderdale beach after king, tuna and wahoo amongst others and I will tell you what those are the best moments I have ever had. For some reasone I catch more fish alone than with my buddy. Tight lines

  • @oooosix Boring ?????? problem is you don't like yourself enough. you need to be surrounded by people.

    think about it.

  • @plutoplatters your boring matey, who are you to judge

  • in new zealand (the best striped marlin and kingfish fishery in the world with world records for both of those spices) we call yellow tail - kingfish and we use yellow tail (mackeral) for bait. nice vid!

  • What a great vid bro, YT season is just around the corner down here in Sonora, can't wait!

  • how can you drill a fish over the side of the kayak? you woul'd turn over!!!

    THIS IS FAKE!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nice catch mate!

    where are you fishing?

  • @racooninabag ,

This video was taken in LaJolla,Ca. USA

  • JCeviche:

What size, type rod/reel line combo are you using for this yellow tail?

    Thanks

    Flash

  • @BassnFlash,

The rod that I am using is Calstar GFGR700M rated for 20-50lb line, ex-fast action. I like to use this rod with a Shimano TLD-20 lever drag single speed loaded with 30 pounds Maxima green line a swivel and 5 feet of 40lb fluorocarbon leader and 2/0 Gorilla hook by Owner. Notice I did not use any sinker cause I fly line my Mackerel. Most of the big fish you see in my video were caught with this set up.

    Tight lines,

    Johnny Ceviche

  • Hi.

I am 16 at the moment & live in San Diego. How old do you have to be to fish of a kayak by yourself & is it recommended to fish alone?

I am really interested in learning how to fish off a kayak. I have been saving for a summer to buy a yak. Can you please give me some different options?

    Tight Lines.

  • What fish is it again???? Just joking! Great work buddy!

  • My friend, this is your great fishing video and I hope you enjoyed very much. I enjoyed myself watching your fishing video. I'm a beginner and I love fishing and I live in San Francisco, but aroud here I didn't see any big fish. I just went to fishing only 3 or 4 times so far. these days the weather is so cold so I dod't go anywhere for fishing.

    GOOD LUCK

  • @Udim94121

There are good fishing areas along the pier in SF bay area. I used to catch big Striper Bass to 4 feet long using eel for bail fly lined. Port Chicago area in Concord and the Channel by Mare Island Vallejo are good fishing grounds.

    TL,

    johnnyceviche

  • i must have to ask! what kind of reel/rod you are using? you're just free lining your bait?! nice catch

  • korbECk,

I have two favorite rods and reel that I use. The first one is GFGR700M by Calstar rod fitted with TLD 20 lever drag. The second rod is Baidarka by Ikuma fitted with Trinidad 30.

All fish in the are caught with fly lined live bait with exception of Thresher Sharks which were caught with Rapala CD-14.

  • Awesome video! I am going on a fishing trip Sept 19 to target these fish. I want to fight a brawler! I fish a lot of freshwater. Check my videos out. I got over 180 fishing videos of bass, peacock bass, carp and other fish. 5*

  • fishing in a kayak? awosome. where is this and how far out doo you go? seems like it could be a little dangerous

  • how do u know how to set the drag

  • daboodeef179,

How to set the drag. You have to keep in mind, that the drag is to protect your line from breaking. Starting of with the drag loose pull the line out by hand and feel how easy the line comes out of the reel. Now tighten the drag a little and pull again. Keep repeating this process until you feel that you have reach the line breaking point. Now back off a little so that you are able to pull the line again without breaking it now drag is set.

  • this is 2 cool to not try. on spinning gear try a resin bobber (50 grams) with a vinyl 2 to 6 inchs long. pull it in as fast as you can. in the med. it works fantastic

  • Johnny, great fishing videos. How do you mount your camera and what kind of camera are you using? I'd like to set my yak up with something similar in order to record my great catches. Thanks.

  • sdb1147, Thank you for the comment. I mount my camera on a custom home made mount that plugs into the rod holder. I use a mini cam Sony DCR-HC96 with an external helmet cam attached.

    Good Luck,

    Johnny Ceviche

  • Hi Johnny, Do you have any video or pictures of your custom home made camera mount? It looks like it works great and I hope to make my own. Thanks.

  • is that a yellow tail?

  • where do you think the best spot to fish for yellowtail is. I have caught 1 in cornados, and broke off 1 in la jolla?

  • sharinganmaster12,

Fish anywhere North of the Kelp beds 75 to 150 feet deep, aldo keep an eye where most of the kayak are fishing very good chance they have the latest scoop where YT s are haging around.

  • Johnny, Wanted to tell you that I have watched and enjoyed all your videos that you have posted. It has helped pass this tough winter here in the Northeast (NY). I hope to see you post more videos in the future.

  • Most of the anglers catch and kill automatically just for fun and often they throw away the fish.Useless people spend ur time in another way..loosers! (i hope not you Jc...but take care )

  • Another nice YT! I gotta have more... zzzzing.

  • jceviche whats the model of yourkayak and what does it have by the way good fishing ,after seeing your video feel like trying kayak fishing love your videos

  • LILCISCO,

The kayak is made by Ocean Kayak and it's a Prowler 15.

I bought the basic kayak and I customized it by installing two flush mount rod holders just behind the seat, a ten inches hatch installed in the cockpit, a Fish finder with GPS map mounted by my foot, a bar mounted at the foot section used to store the rods on transit and a bait tank.

  • Sweet catch! I love your videos. When do the yellow tail usually start running off La Jolla?

  • Yellow tail have been caught off La Jolla on Dec,Jan, and Feb so far and in large quantity and quality 25 to 45 pounds. Usually they start to show up on April to September.

  • about how many miles offshore are you?
