It's not about Australia being an island, it's about being an english-native country. In most of those (UK, USA, Australie, NZ, etc.) there simply is no need for foreign languages and therefore even the teachers (!) are not as good at it as our teachers are at English. At least, thats my observation...

I don't know what is different in OZ from the US (maybe the superiority complex) but I was raised speaking both and I have met people getting pHd's in the US in German who learned through lessons and classes and not family and they speak German terribly here...

you seem nervous but don't let that hold you back because in the US they make tons of mistakes and you can't tell them they are wrong and except for Germans in the states and few family immersed people, u are better...

@Vleertouwer I was immersed in German and English since birth and get it because of that and although I can understand some dutch because of the similarities, the differences are just as different in English and German as Dutch and German, yet my experience is that Dutch people know German and English better than Germans or US Americans or British and that may something that helps... in the Netherlands, if they don't understand English then German often works... that makes a difference...

@HerrSpieldose First, let me make clear that Dutch and German are way more alike than German and English.

Also yes, Dutch people are often quite skilled at languages because the country is more internationally focussed, and not as nationalistic and proud of their own language as most bigger countries are. So the result is that dutch people are better at german than american people, and dutch people are also better at english than german people. Oh lord, I love my country.

kommt drauf an aus welchem sprachstamm du kommst. wenn man mit einer slavischen sprache aufgewachsen ist, ist polnisch wahrscheinlich einfacher. mein polnischer wortschatz ist so beschränkt, dass ich nur recht kurze unterhaltungen mit menschen führen kann, die ich absolut nicht mag ;D, aber die deutsche sprache ist so schwer, dass selbst viele deutsche sie nicht richtig sprechen können. hehe

Sie sind sehr gut zu verstehen und haben auch nur sehr wenige Fehler in Grammatik und Ausdruck gemacht, es waren vielleicht 4. Das ergäbe, nach zwei Jahren Deutschunterricht, auf jeden Fall eine 2 - also ein "gut"! Wenn Sie mal deutsches Privatfernsehprogramm sehen, werden Sie merken, daß die meisten Deutschen mehr Fehler machen wenn sie reden, als Sie in diesem kurzen Video!

there are only very little mistakes,which not are that bad like when you forget to spell an e or something,but it´s really good.You really brave,not veryone shows his skills because they think they´re too bad(like me^^)

Really impressive. Just one thing though - on the internet you should never translate your english "you" to a german "sie" - that's formal speech and nobody here in germany does this. Just use singular "du" or plural "ihr".

So you should have said: "Könnt ihr mich verstehen" ;)
