There are so many things that WILL go wrong during learning to fly R/C helis, and you know they are all potentially fatal. But this is just plain stupidity. The lead weights inside the main blades are bonafide projectiles when "let loose" Once, they hit the inside of my carhood (by chance it was opened...12 volts...) so the windscreen was saved! A minor "reversed" dent was the result.
has anyone been decapitated by rc before ? i know it is real easy to get killed by them but ya just wondering ? after reading this i began to wonder a little bit ?
if you wee standing above that it would take a good chunk of your head off.. scary shit ! and i found it funny where you were more worried about finding your rotor assembly than your raptor :D was any damage done to the blades ?
glad to know they go up...i broke the bottom bolt once and it slammed it to the ground....luckily it was only 12-18 inches from the ground.. not even a boome strike.
I know we shouldn't laugh cos all in this hobby know how dangerous models can be but your reaction when the blades depart company from the heli is classic!!! lol
same sort of thing happens sometimes on my planes if the prop adapter is slightly loose, tho not as fast or big a 4in prop at 30krpm will still hurt and will go a fair way.
OK......i thought this was HILARIOUS! The way u look up fin bewilderment at the blades shot off into the air. Its only hilarious cos u didnt get HURT. But geeez......how lucky are you????
damn dude... this is such a cool video - you're lucky you caught this on tape. thought about entering this to those funny videos on tv? you might get a prize!
@ATLRCFlyer I was just inching the stick up very slowly.... it had high headspeed, but not a whole lot of pitch at that point, of course, without the weight of the heli, they took off like a rocket!
I think this clip can be a good lesson for all of us who fly models. I had 7 flights so far, I think that I will do a bigger check of my heli. I go though links and bolts before flights, but a more thorough maintenance never hurts.
@odam2k Man you are lucky ;) they did not come at ya. Else we will be watching a headless guy with radio in his hands :D trying to find his head hahahah :) you are really lucky. For helis really, check everything before you fly my man
@alishanmao Believe me, it was a lesson well learned that day. The fact that the blades were already long gone before I even reacted to it shows just how fast it can happen, and if the blades went out instead of up, you wouldn't even notice it before one went through you! I am extra cautious these days.
@odam2k you should have given some money out to charity to say thank you to GOD that blades went up instead of coming at ya. you are totally right, with the speed they went up, it would have chopped you in two pieces and you would know. or even the Camera person. was there one? be always careful my man
@odam2k I guess I won't be buying anything second hand without dissecting the entire helicopter and doing a rebuild. Thanks for the warning through this video.
Seen this a while back but it still brings a chill to my radio sticks. Very sorry for your loss but at least the bird didn't take a tumble. Nice work on the throttle hold switch. I wish you nothing but fun flying and safe landings. :)
Yep .. made plenty of mistakes over the years ... but when it comes to RC heli's - while I am still getting my flying skills to a level I'll be happy with, I know enough about them not being toys to ever allow me to make a mistake that careless! (regardless of how funny it was)
@kiwibob72 Mistakes are easily made when there is so much to check. I bought a Vario Bezine, looked to be meticulously built. As the machine had not been flown from new I still checked everything and all seemed fine. I was setting up the gyro when I gave it a little blip on the throttle and the head twisted on the main shaft popping the linkage rods off. The Jesus bolt was in but it was sat on TOP of the main shaft, not through it. The 2 side bolts did a good job holding the head on though!!!!
AAAHHAAHAAAAaaaaaaa.... that's sooo funny I fell out of my chair laughing so hard. I love the way the pilot just looks helplessly up at the flyaway rotor then glances back at the poor heli sitting there headless.
WOW! Talk about 'hang time!' Any idea what the peak altitude was? I was laughing so hard that my bird on my shoulder was laughing too!!!! Then he stopped and said: "What's so funny?" LOL!!!
The 50 has a ring that tightens around the mast. That was enough to spin up the blades, since I added throttle slowly. Once the head left the mast, it was like one of those pull toys that you pull the plastic strip and it spins the blades... they went up about 60 feet or so, and came down softly in the grass...
I was laughing so hard I think I woke the neighbors...
yes I've had my own share of stupid mistakes. Rudder pushrod detached, gyro reversed, struggling with tail problems for a week when one tail blade was facing backwards. Once trying to fly with the pitch channel upside down (yes it -does- fly...)
I think it went about 60-80 feet in the air... I was worried it was going to land on the roof of a 2 story building right beside the parking lot... It was airborn for 13 seconds or so,
Glad you enjoyed it :) but it does show just how dangerous these things can be, it only takes one small mistake. Luckily the head stayed together once it came off.
Some people are in too much of a hurry to see their heli fly and this sort of thing happens. Every time I fly a real aircraft I do a check, and when I fly my models (Heli's) ... I do the same... Dont forget to do a post flight check as well. Good luck with your flying.
This wasn't caused by rushing, heck it was two weeks after I rebuilt it till this was taken. I am extremely cautious in that regard. The 50 has a ring that tightens around the mast. That was enough to spin up the blades, since I added throttle slowly.
