If you would have bothered to actually use your eyes you would have seen A. Flames coming out of the rear (visible at "close" shot) B. The stream of smoke becomes thinner and thinner (meaning that the shuttle is moving away from the camera (which would in this case be up) not in the fasion of a rocket instead of alongside the camera in the fasion of a plane.

I just got a job working on the engines for the shuttle. It's cool you caught the launch on tape. NASA narrates the whole launch with really good footage on nasaTV if you wanna see close-ups of the engines starting and all the cool stuff. There's a link on the NASA website.

Even when in zoom it almost imposable to see the shuttle at least in computer screen. You can see the burned fuel trace behind the shuttle but it will gone on 40 km altitude cause there is almost no atmosphere.

the burned fuel trace stops because that's where the solid rocket boosters run out. after that, it's just the three main engines on the shuttle, which only produce water vapor as exhaust.
